Patented Aug. 30, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT? OFFICE WILLIAM G. WEBER, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL CORSET COMPANY, AURORA, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS CORSET AND IBRASSIERE Application filed January 12,
This invention relates to a combination corset and brassiere. v
The object of the invention is to produce a well fitting combination garment which is easy to don and is self-adjusting to the figure of the wearer.
Another object is to produce a unitary structure in which the brassiere is permanently secured to the corset, partly by stitching and partly by yielding means whereby the brassiere and corset will be independently self-adjustable to the figure of the wearer.
The garment is attractive in appearance, permits free movement on. the part of the wearer without strain on the garment, and properly supports and confines the figure.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the back of a garmentembodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows the outside of the garment in open, spread out position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, through the back of the garment.
In that embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the corset is indicated as a whole at and the brassiere at 11. The corset is a side closing garment adapted to encircle the body of the wearer from, or slightly above, the waist line to below the hips. The corset comprises a front section which may be formed ofany desired number of panels. In the present embodiment it comprises three panels 12, 13, and 14, stitched together, the center panel 13 being made of a plurality of pieces. To one longitudinal side margin of the front panel 12 issecured an elastic panel 15 and the opposite longitudinal. side margin of the front panel 14is provided with fastening means for engaging cooperating fasten ing means 16 en a similar elastic panel 17 at I the side of the garment opposite the panel 15. In the present embodiment the back of the corset between the elastic sections 15 and 17 comprises three non-elast c panels indicated at 18, 19 and 20, stitched to each other along.

fined by the line 21 and the upper margin of the back and of the elastic sides is defined by the dotted line 22.
The brassiere 11 comprises a front member 23, the longitudinal side margins of which are approximately under the arms of the wearer. One of the side margins is provided ,with fastening means and the other has stitched to it a back member 24. A. back member 25. is identical with the member 24 except that it is provided with fastening means 26 for cooperatingwith the fasteners on the front section 23.
The corset and brassiere are secured together, partly by stitching and partly by yielding means. The front 23 is stitched to the top of the corset along the line 21. Each of the back members 24 and 25 has secured to its downwardly extending lower margin 27 toward the side of the corset, a triangular piece of elastic fabric 28, 29, respectively, which is stitched along its side margin to the corset body by lines of stitches 30, 31, re spectively. These triangular elastic pieces form a part of each of the back sections of the brassiere and overlie the elastic side panels of the corset. The lower margin 27 extends upwardly as shown, substantially in alignment with thelower edges of the elastic pieces 28, 29.
The top margins 32 of the back members 24, 25, incline downwardly toward each other as they approach the center of the back and the longitudinally extending, spaced apart edges 33 of said back panels extend downwardly. from the top mar ins '32 to a point near the upper edge 22 of t e corset. At this point an elastic strip 34 is attached to the back 24 and a similar strip 35 is attached to the back 25 by stitching. These strips extend diagonally downwardly and cross each other at the center of the back approximately at the waist line. The strips are substantially parallel to the margins 27 at each side. Their free ends are stitched to the corset below the waist line, preferably by longitudi- I The back members of the brassiere preferably are not attached to the corset except by means of the stitches 36 and 37 through the elastic strips 34 and 35, and the stitching wearer, said corset extending waist line to below the hips,
to each back bers,
and 31 through the side margins of the elastic pieces 28 and 29. Shoulder straps 38 each have one end secured to the top of the front of the brassiere and the other end to the to margins 32 adjacent the edges 33 of the back members.
The elastic piece 28 and strip 34 hold the back member 24 in proper position relatively to the corset and the elastic piece 29 and strip 35 function similarly with respect to the back 25. The yielding material of the connections between the brassiere back and the corset permits free movement of the body and arms of the wearer and provides for independent self-adjustment of the brassiere back and of the corset, relatively to the body of the wearer. In a garment embodying the present invention the shoulder straps may normally fit snugly over the shoulders; and yet freedom of movement is afforded without strain on the straps through the yielding means by which the brassiere is secured to the corset. The shape and arrangement of the back sections and of the elastic connecting means is such that the proximate edges of the back sections 24, 25, are normally drawn toward each other and downwardly, which makes the parts fit snugly against the back and prevents the shoulder straps from slipping.
Changes may be made in details of construction without departing from the scope of my invention and I do not intendto be limited to the exact form shown and described except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim: n
1. A combination corset and brassiere, the corset comprising a non-elastic front section, elastic side panels and a non-elastic back se cured together to encircle the body of the wearer, saidcor'set extending from about the waist line to below the hips, a brassire consisting of a front member and two back members, the front member stitched to the front of the corset, a piece of elastic fabric connecting the lower part of each back member to the side of the corset and overlying said corset elastic panels, an elastic strip secured 7 member of the brassire near the center back and extending diagonally downwardly toward the corset back, and means for securing the free ends of the strips to the corset back.
2. A combination corset and brassi'ere, the corset comprising a non-elastic front section,
elastic side panels and a non-elastic back secured together to encircle the body of the from about the a brassiere consisting of a front member and two back memthe front member stitched tothe front I of the corset, a piece of elastic fabric connecting the lower part of each back member to the side of the corset and overlying said corset elastic panels, an elastic strip secured to each back member of the brassiere near the center back and extending diagonally toward the corset back, means for securing the free ends of the strips to the corset back, and shoulder straps secured to the front of the brassire and to the upper edges of the tgo back members adjacent their proximate e es.
3. A combination corset and brassiere comprising a body encircling garment openat one side and providing connected front and back corset and brassiere portions each having a free edge, said front portion including a lower corset member and an upper brassiere member, said back portion including a lower corset member and two relatively movable back brassiere members overlying the upper portions of the back corset member and secured to opposite sides thereof, an elastic strip securing the adjacent ends of each of the back brassiere members to the back corset member, and means detachably securing the free edges of the front and back corset and brassiere portions at one side of the garment.
4. A combination garment comprising a corset and brassiere, the corset comprising a body encircling member open at one side providing connected front and rear portions, a front brassiere member stitched to the front portion of said corset adjacent the top thereof, a pair of back brassiere members each stitched toopposite sides of the back portion of said corset, said front brassiere member being further stitched to one of said back brassire members, an elastic strip means connecting adjacent free ends of each back brassiere member to the back portion of the corset on each side of the center thereof, and means detachably securing the front and back portions of the corset and brassiere along the open side of the garment.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I aflix my signature, this 8th day of January, 1931.
. WILLIAM G. WEBER.
