The present invention relates to ortable electric sewing machines and particu arly to the containers or cases in which such ma- .chines are carried. The object of our invenvtion is to provide an improved construction of a carrying case particularly adapted for 7 tected from ordinary impact stresses.
The various features of novelty which characterize our invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to .and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, however, and the advantages possessed by it reference should be had to the accompanying drawing and descriptive matter in which we have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention.

In the drawing, we have illustrated a preferred embodiment of our improved carrying case in which the case comprises a rectangular body portion A having a flat bottom member A, vertical front and rear side members A and A respectively, and vertical end members A and A respectively. The case body is internally reinforced at its corners by cleats B of substantially triangular cross-section. The cleats extend vertically from or adjacent to the bottom A to a point adjacent to, but preferably below, the upper ends of the side and end members, to which they are secured in any suitable manner.
A cover or lid C is hingedly connected to the case body by hinges D located at spaced points along the rear side of the case. The cover is preferably formed by a rectangular top plate C and short vertical side and end plates C and C respectively, connected to one another and to the top plate C. The front plate C of the cover is arranged to be detachably connected to the front side A of the body by locking latch means E of a well known type mounted along the line of contact at the front of the case. The body and cover portions of the case heretofore described are made of wood or other material having the necessary strength and lightness with an out or cover of washable material, such as leatherette. A handle F is secured to the upper side of the top plate C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The portable electric sewing machine with which our improved carrying case is especially adapted for use is of the type disclosed and illustrated in the pending application of Richard K. Hohmann, Serial No. 242,368, filed December 24, 1927 and as shown in the drawing comprises a substantially rectangularbase board G on which the machine frame H and electric driving motor are mounted. The machine frame comprises a bed H symmetrically positioned within and slightly spaced from the periphery of the base board, a standard H rising from one end of the bed and an arm H supported by the standard and terminating at its free end in a head H. The sewing machine working mechanism is mainly contained within the frame casting. One end of the hook shaft J of the mechanism projects beyond the bed portion of the frame casting and carries a belt wheel J through which the hook shaft is driven from the motor shaft J atthe rear thereof. A fiat spool plate K and vertical post K are mounted on the upper end of the standard as shown. The hollow head H within which a portion of the needle bar actuating mechanism is contained, extends above and below the arm H on which it is supported.
One embodiment of portable electric sewing machine of the type described. and constructed with frame casting of aluminum alloy weighs less than thirteen pounds. This material decrease in weight from prior constructions is one of the characteristic features of the machine .and its consequent portability makesit particularly in demand for domestic use. In storing and transporting the machine it is necessary that the mechanism be protected from external forces, and particularly sudden impact stresses. In carryingout this object of my invention the body of the case is provided with a cleat M extending transversely of the end A of the body at a point adjacent the bottom A. The lower side M of the cleat is concavely curved to receive and contact with the correspondingly curved end of the base plate G. The upper end of the cleat curved portion is arranged to fit over the base board sufficiently to prevent direct vertical movement of that end of the machine. The lower ends of the corner cleats B at that end of the case terminate at points spaced sufficiently from the bottom plate or are cut away in such a manner as to receive the corner portions of the base board.
At the opposite end of the case is positioned a block N secured to the bottom A and lower end of the side A The block is spaced from the front and rear sides'of the case and arranged to contact with the adjacent end of the base board to hold the machine with the opposite end of the base board in contact with and beneath the cleat M. The inner and upper exp used portions of the block N are desired position. In placing the machine in the case the left end of the machine is tilted downwardly until that end of the base board is fitted within the recess in the cleat M, the curved upper surface of the block N acting during this movement to force the machine into this position by a camming action. Longitudinal movement of the machine in the case is prevented by the joint action of the cleat and block and lateral movement eliminated by a cleat 0 extending along the front edge of the case bottom A.
A rectangular tray P is mounted in the upper portion of the case and arranged with a sereis of separate compartments P in which the various attachments and accessories used in connection with the machine are placed as shown in Fig. 1. With the machine in position the space beneath the overhanging arm is sufiicient to accommodate the detachable motor control mechanism, which, when not in use, is inserted in a bag Q. The corners of the tray are supported on the flat upper ends of the corne: cleats B. The portion of the tray bottom immediately above the position which the machine head H assumes when the machine is inserted, is removed to permit the upper end of the head to project there through. The bottom of the tray at the op posite end of the case is arranged to rest on the flat upper surface of the spool plate K and a small opening P is formed in the bottom surface to permit the spool post K to project therethrough.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the sides and ends P of the tray project vertically beyond the upper end of the case body and the tray and case cover are so proportioned that when the cover is in the closed position, the upper edge of the tray side and end members contact with the underside of the top late C of the cover. The tray and cover thus cooperate to prevent vertical movement of the machine while in the case and to hold it firmly against the bottom member. This contact action of the tray and cover also aids in preventing horizontal movements of the machine and prevents the various articles carried by the tray from being displaced from their respective compartments. The front plate C? of the cover is cut away at its inner side to permit the cover to pass overthe front side of the tray during its movements.
The carrying case of our invention is thus characterized by the simplicity and com pactness of its construction and by the effectiveness of its provisions for maintaining a sewing machine in a predetermined position and preventing the latter from injury while in the case. The weight of the case is quite small and in general the weight of the machine and case totals less than twenty pounds.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes, we have illustrated and described the best form of embodiment of our invention now known to us it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of the apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of our invention as set forth in the appended claims and that in some cases certain features of our invention may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a rectangular body arranged to receive a sewing. machine therein, a rectangular cover connected to said body, and a separate tray positioned in said body and arranged to contact with said machine, said cover being proportioned to hold said tray firmly against said machine when said cover is in its closed position, whereby vertical movements of said machine from a predetermined position are prevented.

4. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a rectangular body adapted to receive a sewing machine therein, a rectangular cover hingedly connected to said body, and a tra supported by said body and having side an end members projecting vertically above said body portion and a bottom surface arranged to contact with the an opening in said bottom surface for the spool post, of the machine, and said tray and cover being so proportioned that said tray side and end members contact with the underside-of said cover in theclosed position of the latter.

A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a relatively deep rec- 3 tangular body arranged to receive a sewing machine therein, and having integral vertical side and end wall members, and means cooperating to prevent vertical movement of said machine in said body comprising a fixed, cleat secured to one end wall and arranged to fit over a horizontally prejecting portion of said machine when the latter is in its carrying position, and means arrangedin the opposite end of tending to maintain said machine in its proper carrying position.
7. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprlsing a rectangular body having vertical side and end members and arranged to receive a sewing machine therein, and means cooperating to prevent longitudinal and vertical movements of said machine in said body comprising a fixed cleat secured to one end of said body and arranged to fit over a projecting portion of said machine and a fixed block secured to the opposite end of said body and arranged to contact with sltioned in and contacting with end wall members of said body and having of said body said body an adjacent end of said machine when said I projecting portion is engaged by said cleat.
8. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a rectangular body arranged to receive a sewing machine therein, and means cooperating to prevent longitudinal movement ofsaid machine in said body comprising a fixed cleat secured to one end of said body and arranged to contact with a projecting portion of said machine and a fixed block secured to the opposite end of said body and having a smooth convex surface arranged to contact with an adjacent end of the machine while the latter is being placed in position, whereby the latter is held in a predetermined position spaced from an end wall of said body.
9. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a relatively deep body having integral side and end wall members and arranged to receive a sewing machine of the character described therein, means fixed in said body for removably holding said machine in a predetermined longitudinal position therein, a tray freely positioned in said body on said'machine and having openings formed therein arranged to receive projecting portions of said machine and a cover hingedly connected to said body and arranged to engage said tray when in its closed position to prevent vertical movements of said machine in said body.
10. A carrying case for a portable sewing machine comprising a relatively deep body having integral side and end wall members and arranged to receive a sewing machine of the character described therein, means fixed in said body for removably holding said machine in a predetermined longiudinal position in said body, a shallow tray freely pothe side and openings receiving projecting portions of said machine, a shallow cover hingedly connected to said body and arranged 'to engage the top of said tray when in its closed position to hold said machine vertically immovable in said .body, and a strap-handle secured to said cover.
