I v An object of my inventionV is to provide a .10 is simple, compact and eiicient inoperation.
' Theinventioniconsists in the improved construction and combination of parts,.to be mo'refully described hereinafter, 'and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed 15 out and distinctly claimed. j l
In the accompanying drawing, tobe taken as a' part Ofthis specification, I have'fully and `clearly illustrated a preferred embodiment of my'inventiomin which drawing- Figure 1 isa top plan view ofthe testing device embodying my invention, and` v Fig. 2 is a vertical cent-ral section thereof onthe line 2-#2 of Fig. 1, but with certain ofthe parts in' elevation'.` l s Referring to the drawingby characters of reference, 1 designates a hollow tubular casing which is preferably cylindrical and comprises guide means. Within the casing 1 is memberl 2 comprising a weight-member 3of metal, preferably brass, and `weighingsubstantially half a pound, and a penetration member'l also of metal andprefe'rably tool steel. In the lower end or bottom face 5 'of member 3 isl anaxial internally `threaded recess 6. Theimember 4 has "asurrounding flange 7 intermediate itsends and above which it is threaded fory engagement ywith the internalthreadsV of recess 6. Below-the flange 7 the member thas agdownward tav pered fconicalpoint 8, the angle of the point preferably being substantially 22%". The lower end ofthecasi'ng 1 is externally threaded to receivea cfap'member 9 which serves as 'a supporting element and whichI is provided with a: central aperture 10 in the axial lineof member 2,'such that member ,4 may project therethrough. The inside faceill of the membei' 9 serves as a stop means to limit down'- ward movement of 'the member 2x Within the casing labove'thie'member `21isfa cylini Y 4 Application md July-18:; 192s, serial in.293,643.
drical sleever 12.y of external diameter the casingnl. The'sleeve 12 terminates at its Vupper end short of the top of the'casing, as
at. 13', toi provide a shoulder for a purpose to be described. The lower end 14 of the sleeve 12 terminates atpa heightabove Vthe bottom face of ther element .9 -substantiallynequal to. the length of members 3` and 4 to servefas la" stop means, such that when the topface 15, of member 3 is engagementl with the `lower end 14 ofthe sleeve,` vthe tip16 of the penetration member 4 will bein the planeof or: flush with theunder face 17 of member or element 9. Themember ,14 may beprovided with guide .pins 18 adjacent its upper ,and lowerends to ride on the inside faceiof oasf ing 1 to aid in maintaining the member2 centrally or axially positionedinlthe `casing 1.- Through the sidewvallof thefcasing lis alongitudinal slot'19, into orthroughwhich projects a pin 20 whichextends transversely` Afrom, the member 3 and which is rigid there# with. On the outside face lOf casing 1 isja catch membe'rz21 which is secured rigidlyin position by rivets or z the like-22,.which also serve to hold Vthejsleeve 12 inposition.l within the casing. The catchrmember 21A includes a resilient arm 423 which terminatesin a hook 24 which `Overliesithe slotV 19 and1 engages stantially equal tothe: internal diameter'of and lies beneath the pin'r20 when the member 2 is in retracted` position `with the top face 15 of member 3 inf engagement with sleeve 12. lThe hoolr2t normallyliesfin the path of movement of the pin 20` and is pro'- vided'` with a cam face 25, so that onmovement of the member 2 'torretracted position, theA pin v20 will flex they catch memberfout of its path and permitthe catch member to snap beneath yitinto lockingor holding .po. sition;v Thecatchmemberl lis provided with parallel lugs 26 adjacentthe rivets 22 betweenwhich extends a pivot pin 27., Jour- Vnaledjon thepin 27 betweenlugsv 26 andfat substantially its midpoint, isa levermember 28.- `The lower endfof the member 28 is secured tol-the. resilient arm 23. a'djacentvhoolr 24by a-rivet or thelike 29'- The other-end v 28a of-lthe lever extends upwardly from the lugs '26 andprovides a -handngrip for Hex-ing A 2oy the arm 23 to release the member 2. Axially of the member 3 in the top face 15 thereof, is
Vflange33the member'32 is hollow, as at 34,
to Aform a Ysleeve having a helical slot 35.
Overlying the topvend of the casing 1 is a w.
ters Patent of the United States is :v
dialplate 'member 36, ypreferably circular, which seatson the shoulder 13 and has a surrounding flange 37 which overlies and Seats on the end of the casing 1. TheY plate member 36 has indiciaf,38marking off the circumferenceof the plate member N36 into thirty-twok equal parts, each division 5 onI the dial indicatingy one( sixty-fourth of an inch of movement of the member 2. Above the dial plate member 36 is a pointer 39, which is' mounted rigidly on one endof a-,shaft40 which projects through va Vcentral bearing ap-` erture. 41 lin the member 36; OnV the shaft 40 between'the pointer and the'member 36, is a` bearing or spacer washer42, and also'on l the shaft is a flan-ge 43 which engages'the under face of member36. The shaft 40 depends into the cylindrical bore 34 ofmember 32 and is provided with a cylindrical head 44 from which'V projects a pin 45 which runs in the slot 35.` On the plate member 36 isan annulus 46v which supports a glass cover-plate 47. The member 36, annulus 46 and rplate 47 are'clfamped in position on the y n, casing lvby a 'sleeve48 which is threaded 011th@ Casing 1, as at 49, and has an inwardly extendingV flange 550, which overlies Vthe plate 47. 1 o Y The operation of my vdevice is as follows:
The devicel is'particularly vadapted forv determining the hardness of molding sand, but
it is evident that it may also be 4used in determining the hardness of other finely divided bonded material. The member 2 is raised'to ,e its retracted position, as shown in Fig.v 2, which will yset the'dial pointer 39 inthe posil tion'of Figfl and at aero.' The device is then placed upon Ya body of molding sand of which it is desired to determine the hardness, with the lower face 17 of element 9 supportingthe device andA being flush with the top face of theY sand. .c Thelever 28 isv now operated to release pin 20, permitting the weighted member 2 to descend by' force of 'gravity and press the pointed penetration member 4 into the sand.` As the weighted member 2 presses the point 16 into the test materiahthe pin 45 will ride in the spiral groove 35, thusf causing rotation of the yshaft 4() and the pointer A.39 which will indicate on the scale or n dial 38 the number of sixty-fourths of an inch which the tip 16 of point 8 of member 4 has moved into'the sand, or the extent of movement of the member 2. The number of sixty-fourths of an inch which the half pound weight member 2pushes the point 16 into the mold ma'- how tightly it is packed. It is apparentA that I have thus provided a device by which the relative hardness of molding sands may be readiy determined, and by which it may be ascertained if. a moldingv sandk vof the requisite hardness'for the desired molding operation has been provided.
Vhat I claim and desire to secureby Letf v`1 "In a'device of thecharacter described, a tubularguide means, aweighted member Vreciprocable within said means and having a penetration'membergat its lower end, said weighted member being movable within said guide means by force of gravity and being adapted to occupy a retracted position, means closing the upperv end' of said guideV means, and means carried by said closing means andy cooperable with said-weighted member to indicate the, extent .of movement of .said weighted member under force of gravity from said'retracted position, j 2.
