Housing of sheet metal is shown as having back 1, top 2 and sides 3, 4, with hinge 5 upwardly from which extends door 6 having lock 7 for holding this closed solid front 6 in set-up or magazine closing position for the cabinet. This closed housing has below the hinge 5 clearance region 8 with ledge 9 as a bottom for receiving the parcels, objects or articles to be vended at a position accessible for withdrawal by one making the purchase.
The side 4: of the housing is provided with window 10 through which may be observed notations 11 for disclosing the extent of residual charge in the magazine. Crank 12 protrudes through opening 13 in the side 4, as a window through which the coins may be inserted as the checks for operating the device.

therethrough into which pins 17 may extend in providing hinge mountings for shelves 18 freely swingable into downward or depending position. From such drop position to set up horizontal position, the shelves 18 may be readily swung by a movement from the lower shelf upward toward the top. This is effected by seats 19 (Fig. 3) of each shelf, in the upward swing being clear of trigger 20 (Fig. 6) as therebelow but riding up on bevel side 21 of the trigger approximating the horizontal plane of the shelf, thereby causing retraction of plunger or trigger 20 against the action of compression spring 22 so that as the shelf 18 just passes horizontal position, the spring 22 is effective to thrust the trigger 20 under the seat 19 to the limit determined by pin 23 in slot 24: (Fig. 7). There is accordingly hereinprovided a simple set-up device for the dropped shelves so that articles may be placed on each of the shelves and the door 6 swung up into locked position.
At the opening 13 for the check or coins, the device as herein shown involves disk 25 having seats 26, 27, 28. (Fig. 9). In the instance wherein three coins of two difierent denominations are used, as herein, the smaller ten cent silver coin at seat 26 and the one cent copper coins for seats 27, 28. With the checks thus introduced, the crank 12 may be operated clockwise to carry pin 29 as projecting inward from the disk 25 (Figs. 8, 11'), to ride in slot 30 of companion disk 31 adjacent the disk 25. In this movement of the disk 25 there is resistance of spring 32 having end 33 anchored with the disk 31 and the opposite end engaged by pin 3% fast with the disk 25. This are of clockwise movement of the crank-12 thus places the spring 32 under tension so that there is a tendency at the release of the handle 12 for bringing the seats 26, 27, 28, into registry at the opening 13 of the housing.
As the spring resisted movement of the disk 25 is completed and the pin 29 abuts the terminus of the slot 3O, the continued clockwise effort made at the crank 12 would be resisted by disk 31 having tooth 35 engaging ratchet 36 as projected by spring 37 in block 38 as a guide for the ratchet 36 and also providing housing about the disks 25, 31. With a coin in the seat 28, the ratchet 36 is forced radial- 1y outward thereby to clear the tooth 35. Likewise, with coins or checks in the seats 27, 26, there is a thrusting outward respectively of ratchets 39, 40, against their respective springs 37. In the event any .coin be omitted, the ratchet responding thereto would not be retracted and it would not be possible to shift the fragmentary group of coins past the ratchet-s. Of course absence of coins would also hold the disk 31 locked. However, with the coins of the denominations required, the holding ratchets 36, 39, 40, are thrust into retracted position to permit the shifting of the disk 31 and its tooth 35 clear of these ratchets.
As this position of clearing the ratchets has occurred, (Fig. 11) pin 41 through cover plate 42 for the housing as anchored by screws 43 rides in way 44 in the disk 25, to engage the edges of the respective checks and thus insure ejection of the coins into chute 45 for reception by box 46 as a casting fast with the housing 38 and provided with lid 47 having lock 48 which may be released for obtaining access to the box 46 in removing the coins therefrom.
In the instance wherein the disks are shown as having two feed seats for checks and as herein disclosed, the teeth 35 are in duplicate remote from the forward holding ratchet uping, thus locating rearward holding ratchet 49 (Fig. 9) having minor thrusting spring 50 compressed by plug 51 when the door 6 is in closed position. This means that Y recovery from the initial position, thus herein safeguarding against any tripping action attempted which might be made to swing back for recovering the coin after the tripping at the ratchets 36, 39, 40. This is precluded teeth 53 controlled by the ratchet 36 when the ratchet 40 has been released in sequence after the releasing holding action of the ratchets 39, 36.
The disk 31 has key connection 54 with shaft 55, on which is fixedly mounted sprocket 56 carrying sprocket chain 57 the upward reach of which is groove 58 of column 59 carrying housing 60 for ways 61 in which the triggers 20 are mounted. In this groove 58 is guided cam block of the flight 62 (Fig. 4) as a section in the upward reach of this sprocket chain 57. This sprocket chain at the upper portionof the column 59, 60, has eccentric bearing 63 for follower sprocket wheel 64.
Bearing 65 for the sprocket wheel 64 being eccentric of the mounting bearing 63, permits by slacking of nut 66 a rotation of the bearing 63 for taking up slack in the chain and making adjustment relatively to casting variations in accurately locating the flight 62 for acting upon the pins 23 in efiecting withdrawal of the triggers in succession.
The flight 62 has abutment or face 67. After the top plunger of trigger 20 has been retracted, a further upward movement of the flight 62 causes the face 67 to engage fixed stop 68 in looking the tripping mechanism against further upward travel. At the lowermost or position for charging of the magazine, the flight 62 has abutment or face 69 to contact with stop 70 of the column 60 against further downward travel. The endless chain device is thus limited to one reach of vertical reciprocatory travel. These faces 67, 69 (Fig. 4), do not encroach upon the inclined cam face portions of'the flight 62 with which the pins 23 coact. The return reach of this chain 57 is in mesh with sprocket wheel 71 on shaft 72 in bracket 73 from the column 60. This shaft 72 is provided with pinion 74 in mesh with gear 75 carrying the notations 11 as disclosed at the window 10.
The gear ratio is such as to the'location of that twenty-three of the articles yet remain to' be dispensed from the device.
The gear 75 is provided with tooth 77 which, as the gear is rotated to have all of the articles dispensed tilted for falling from the shelves, comes to position over bar'7 8 in guide 79 of housing 38. This bar 78 is maintained elevated by compression helical spring 8O thrusting against pin 81 through the bar 78, the lower portion of the spring resting on ledge 82. Depression of this bar 78 against the resistance of spring 80 by the action of the tooth 77, brings the bar into seat 83 in position locking ratchet 36 against shifting clear of tooth 35. Accordingly, with the storw capacity of the cabinet exhausted, the supply of coins, even proper to the device, may not be effective for depriving the one seeking to operate the device of the coins; even should the one not observe the window, for the reason that the checks could not effect thrusting clear of the ratchet 36 and accordingly the spring 32 would be effective upon release of the handle 12 for'bringing the coins back to the opening 13, so that the one seeking to use the device might recover the coins. This .lock'bar 78avoids taking. the strain upon;
the device or apparatus by the flight lock at the stop 68.
When the device is to be recharged, an opening of the door 6 allows the spring 52 to clear the ratchet 49 from recover direction holding so that the crank 12 may be freely operated counter-clockwise in shifting the flight 62 from the vicinity of the abutment 68 to the vicinity of the abutment 70.
lVhile the flight 62 retracts but a single trigger 20 at a time, in its lowermost positions it is clear of holding any pin retracted, and the one desiring to charge the apparatus, may with fingers below the edge of the lowermost shelf, swing such shelf upward, and the continued movement of the hand toward the top of the cabinet thus allows the shelves to ride by the portions 21 in thrusting the suecessive triggers to clear the seats 19 and then engage thereunder as the shelves come into horizontal positions.
The operator then may charge the articles upon the respective shelves, close the door, and the apparatus is in condition for vend' ing, for the indicator disk is reset at 24 from the empty position due to the gear connection with the chain. Furthermore, as the cam 7 7 cleared the bar 78 the ratchets are released to permit vending operations to occur. Accordingly the one making a purchase may place the coin, in this instance a plurality of checks, in the proper seat or seats at the window 13, operate the crank 12 clockwise against the resistance of spring 32, then topick up the disk 31 as the checks move in clearing the locked position of the disk 31 from the holding action of the successive ratchets 36, 39, 40. The continued movement brings about ejection of the coin or coins by the action of the pin 41 into the chute 45,. while the reverse holding ratchet 49 has had. the tooth 35 moved to travel clear therefrom. This disk 25 accordingly has successive travels of 180 between vending operations. The movement of the disk 31 as effected by the closing action of the disk 25 therewith causes the disk 31 to operate the chain 57 and the flight 62 as drawing a trigger 20 against the action of spring 22 thereby allowing the lowermost horizontal shelf 19 to drop to depending position with the article thereon sliding to position for access by the purchaser upon the shelf 9. Besides the way 30 in the disk 31 for the pin 29, there is major way 84: for the pin 3e and the spring 32.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. Check controlled apparatus comprising a housing provided with a back, parallel hingepins adjacent said back, shelves mounted on said pins, a front for the housing, housing sides connecting the front and back, a column adjacent one of said sides providing a main guide past which the set up shelves extend, a sprocket chain in said guide, a flight including acam carried by said chain, trans verse guides carried by said column parallel to the shelf hinge pins, plungers in said transverse guides, and spring means normally projecting the plungers into the path of the shelves and as projected retaining the respective horizontal shelves in article holding position, said flight as movable by said chain having said cam effective for retracting the pins in succession for releasing shelves for downward swinging to article discharging position.
2. heck controlled apparatus comprising 7 parallel to the shelf hinge pins, plungers in said transverse guides, and spring means normally projecting the plungers into the path of the shelves and as projected re taining the respective horizontal shelves in article holding position, said cam flight successively engaging the pins to trip the shelves, a last engaged pin for tripping being held retracted by the flight while the next pin is operated to releasing position for a succeeding shelf.
3. Check controlled apparatus comprising a housing, parallel hinge pins mounted in said housing, shelves mounted on said pins, a sprocket chain in said housing located at one side of said shelves, transverse guides fixed with the housing and parallel to the shelf hinge pins, plungers in said transverse guides, spring means normally projecting the plungers into the path of the shelves and as projected retaining the respective horizontal shelves in article holding position, a flight earned by said chain, said flight having an abutment and means to engage and retract the plungers as the flight is moved with the chain, drive means for effecting movement of the chain and flight to successively retract the plungers and release the shelves, an overwinding stop adjacent the top of the housing for engagement by said abutment to limit the travel of the chain, and means for disconnecting the drive means to allow manual resetting of the flight by movement with the chain away from the top.
