UNITEE STATES PATENT QEEIGE GUSTAVE A. UNKRIGH, OF FAIRFIELD, IWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,433, dated February 13, 1877; application filed July 22,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE A. UNKEIcH, of Fairfield, in the county of Jeii'erson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement' in Ventilatore 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construc tion and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a central vertical sectional view of my ventilator.
This invention relates to ventilators, and consists in the devices, combination, and arrangement hereinafter fully described. Itis especially adapted to wells and cisterns, but may be employed wherever a ventilator is needed.
In the annexed drawing, A designates a casing, preferably of rectangular form, which is closed at the top by a cap or cover, B, and divided longitudinally by a partition, O, so as to form chambers or passages D D. E E are openings through casing A into chambers D D. They are placed oppositeto one another, and covered with air-filters F F', of wire or other suitable material. Partition G is extended downward at c. The sides A of casing A, which are joined by said partition, (and one 0f which is shown in the drawing,) are each now descends through passage or chamberD into the cistern or well, takes up whatever foul gases may have accumulated there, and carries the same up through chamber D', and out through opening E and sieve or air-filter F. If the wind blows from the opposite direction, the operation is substantially the same, except that the entrance becomes the exit, and vice versa. y
rIhis apparatus may be constructed of Wood, metal, or any other suitable material. It is simple, compact, and portable, forming an article of manufacture and sale, which is applicable without modification to any well, cistern, or apartment where a ventilator may be desired.
I have described it as arranged vertically, but it will also operate if placed in a horizontal position. It allows a cistern or well to be completely covered and tightly cemented around it, so as to be perfectly rat-proof.
I am aware ofthe patent of G. W. Muir for ventilators for buildings, dated July 29, 1862, and I therefore disclaim such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A ventilator provided with the central longitudinal partition C, extending below. the sides of the casing A, which latter is provided with openings E E and cover B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have also provided with a downward extension, a. hereunto subscribed my name in the presence The operation is as follows: The device as a whole is placed upright on a well or cistern, with extension a o passing down into the same, so as to make passages D Dl communicate therewith. The wind, purified by air-Iilter F,
