Description
. r a 1 m u 1 i 1 2/2522?- V i? Aug.- 30, 1932. A. A. D ENNIS VENEER JOINT GLUER Filed June 4, 1928 f heating Patented Aug. 30, 1932 UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE ALFRED A. DENNIS, OF GRAN I) RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO VENEER MACHINERY COMPANY, OF GRAND .RAPIDS, MICHIGAN A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN VENEER JOINT GLUEB Application filed June 4,
This invention relates to a gluing apparatus particularly useful in conjunction with applying glue to the edge of thin material such as veneers, though it is to be understood that the apparatus is applicablefor use in applying glue to the edges of boardsor the like and is not restricted to thin veneer stock alone.
It is a primary Object and purpose of the present invention to construct a novel apparatus which will continuously supply glue to a rotating shell whereby the glue is furnished to the outer side of the shell continuously at proper temperature and. consistency against whichthe edges of the material to be treated may be engaged to properly receive a coating of glue. Further objects and purposes of the invention are to provide a mechanism of this character which may be used in conjunction with a table over which the material to which the glue is applied may be handled very readily, and to provide a construction which is of simple and practical design and which will completely fulfill the purposes for which it is designed.
An understanding of the invention for the attainment of the ends stated may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical section and side elevation illustrating the gluing apparatus of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical section through the immediate glue applying member or shell, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section and plan, the plane of the section being on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The apparatus is applied to a table 1 having a circular opening 2 therethrough below and extending upwardly into which is a glue containing pot 3, in turn received within a receptacle 4 open at its upper end and in the bottom of which is a heating element 5 against which the glue pot bears. The heat ing element 5 may be of any suitable electric device to which current may be con- 1928. Serial No. 282,746.
ducted in any conventional manner. The
At the upper side of the table and at one side of the opening 2 therethrough a vertical bracket 7 is permanently secured having spaced apart upper and lower horizontal" arms 7 on extending over said opening. A vertical spindle 8 is rotatably mounted on and extends through the arms 70; and is equipped with a relatively large pulley 9 at its upper end adapted to be driven by a belt 10 from anysuitable source of'power, such as an electric motor.
The spindle 8 immediately below the lower arm 7 a is equipped with an enlarged head 11 to which an interiorly threaded inverted cup member 12 is secured preferably by a set screw 13 as best shown in Fig. 2. A hollow vertical cylindrical shell 14 of metal is threaded into the lower end of the member 12 and extends into the glue Gr. At a point above the upper side of the table 1 and at a distance somewhat greater than the thickness of the material which is to be glued at its edges, a plurality of spaced apart holes 15 are made through shell 14, all located in substantially the same horizontal plane, while within the shell "a spiral conveyor 16 is mounted extending from the lower end thereof to above the plane of the holes 15. It is apparent that with the rotation of the spindle 8 in the proper'direction, the glue is carried upwardly by the conveyor 16 and is passed outwardly through the openings 15 and then runs down the outer side of the shell.
On a suitable supporting bracket 17 at one side of the opening 2 a spreader member 18 is secured having a spreading plate 19 at its free end which comes against the outer side of the shell 14 directly above the upper side of the table 1. This insures that the glue which has passed outwardly through the openings 15 shall be spread evenly over the surface of the shell at the place Where the material engages thereagainst.
A metal plate 20 is fixed to the upper side of the table having one edge lying closely adjacent to the shell as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. The veneers 21 are moved manually over the plate 20 with their edges contacting against the outer sides of the shell at the points where the glue has been spread, and on passing a length of material, such as the veneers shown,
. zontal table having an opening therethrough,
a glue holding receptacle located below the table at said opening, a vertical member mounted for rotation and extending at its lower end through said opening in the table into the glue holding receptacle, means for rotating said member, and means on said member for carrying glue from the glue holding receptacle to above the upper side of said table and delilvering it to the outer sides of said member.
2. Gluing apparatus comprising, a horizontal table having an opening therethrough, a glue holding receptacle mounted below the table at said opening, a vertical spindle mounted for rotation above the opening, a hollow vertical cylindrical shell connected to the spindle and extending into said receptacle, said shell having a plurality of openings through its sides located substantially in the same horizontal plane a distance above the upper side of the table, conveying means within the shell extending from its lower portion to above said openings therethrough, and a spreading member mounted on the table and bearing against the shell a short distance below said openings.
3. A construction containing the elements in combination defined in claim 2 combined with a plate attached to the upper side of the table at one side of said shell and having an edge thereof closely adjacent said shell and pagltly covering the opening through said ta e.
4. Gluing apparatus comprising a rotatably mounted vertical hollow cylinder, a glue pot located beneath the cylinderhaving the lower end of the cylinder extended into the glue pot, means located within the cylinder and actuated by rotation thereof for elevating glue from the glue pot to the upper portion of the cylinder, means for distributing glue elevated by said elevating means to the exterior surface of the cylinder and means within the glue pot to obstruct rotation of the body of glue therein.
5. A machine of the class described, having in combination a hollow rotary tool having a verticaally disposed glue applying surface, and means for elevating glue through the tool and delivering a continuous supply of glue 7. A machine of the class described, having 7 in combination a rotary tool having a vertically disposed lateral glue applying surface and an interior passage with a port opening through its lateral surface, and means for maintaining a flow of glue through the passage in one direction, outwardly through said port and over the applying surface.
- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
