N.PE|'ERS. EHOTO-LJTHDGRAPHEK WASMINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY OGDEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATED WATER-CLOSET BOWLS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,408, dated February 13, 1877; application filed January 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY OGDEN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Ventilated Water-Closet Bowl, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a ventilating-pipe connection to the upper part of the bowl, but below the seat, whereby the bowl will be ventilated whether closed or in use, and there is a channel under the top flange and above the water-inlet pipe for the vapor to pass around from the different portions of the bowl to the exit-pipe unobstructed by the water.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved ventilated wash-bowl, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bowl, which may be of any approved kind, in the upper part of which I arrange a ventilating-pipe connection, B, to be connected with a pipe leading to the chimney, or fixed in any other way to produce a draft for ventilating the bowl whether in use or closed by the cover. d is a flange, which I propose to arrange on the inner surface of the bowl, above the inlet-pipe D, for water, and below the ventilatingpipe, to make a channel within which the obnoxious gases may collect, and a portion of the same be carried downward inliU the trap in the water as it enters the bowl, while that portion not so disposed of escapes into the upper channel E, from whence it finds exit by means of the exit-pipe B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A water-closet bowl constructed with an upper and a lower annular channel, the former connected with the exit-pipe, while the latter connects with the water-inlet pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY OGDEN.
