- relays In the case of overload protective systems which are to operate selectively, relays whose operation depends upon the magnitude of the resistance in the defective part of the line are I frequently used to determine the tripping time delay. In the case of short circuits, such relays cause those switches which are nearest to the point where the short circuit occurs to operate first. As, however, the relays should of course operate only when a short circuit occurs, they are commonly used in combination with auxiliary relays operating responsively to a function of the current.
