MODEL FOR ILLUSTRATING OFFICE BUILDINGS AND THE LIKE Application filed November 18, 1930. Serial No. 496,429.
6 model of the above kind having a removable section carrying an indication of the characteristics of the related larger object at a point corresponding to the section.
Another object is to provide a model corresponding to an office building or other building, provided with removable drawers, each drawer indicating the floor plan of the building at a particular floor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a model corresponding to any solid having non-homogeneous characteristics, with removable sections indicating the particular characteristics of the solid at said sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above kind which will be attractive and pleasing to the eye and which will give the desired information quickly and expeditiously.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description and claims when considered with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of one type of model illustrating an ofiice building;
Fig. 2 is a model which is a miniature of the building itself;
Fig. 3 represents a slightly different construction of model from that shown in Fig. 2;
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, practical commercial embodiments of the invention are shown, but as such illustrations are primarily for purposes of disclosure, it will be understood that the structures may be modified in various respects without departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1, the model herein shown comprises a block 10 whose interior may be constructed in any way. This block may be made in any ornamental configuration and may be provided with corner flanges 11 to enhance its attractiveness.
The side faces of the block 10 between the flanges 11 are substantially flat or plane, and have painted or otherwise disposed thereon representations 14 and 15 of the corresponding side walls of the building to be illustrated. These representations may be fiat or slightly raised and are indicated on two sides by 14 and 15. The other sides of the building are similarly represented on the corresponding faces of the model. The faces of the model not covered by the building representations may be made blue or any other desired color to provide a background for the building faces.
Located at difierent floors of the model are removable drawers or plate-like members 16 provided with knobs 17 for pulling them out, as illustrated in Fig. 1. As many of these drawers as desired may be provided, it being generally suflicient to provide one drawer to illustrate all the floors having the same floor plan.
Referring now to Fig. 6, the drawer 16 may have a floor plan 18 laid out in it. This floor plan, of course, represents the actual floor plan of the building and shows the various details, such as elevators, posts, walls, windows, corridors, oflices, etc.
Instead of having a simple map or floor plan on the diiferent drawers, an actual model of the floor may be built on the drawers 16.
Referring now to Fig. 4, in this figure the layout is represented by 19 and comprises upstanding parts corresponding to the columns, walls, windows, elevators, shafts, partitions, etc, of the building. In this figure, the columns are denoted by 40, windows by 41, partitions by 42, elevator shafts b 43, individual offices by 44, etc. If desire the partitions 42 may be made removable so that any combination of ofiice space may be laid out.
Referring now to Fig. 2, this model is an exact miniature of the building itself and comprises a block 20 whose interior may be constructed in any way and Whose outside configuration is the shape of the building itself. The block 20 is mounted upon a suitable pedestal 21. At the diiferent floors drawers 22 having knobs 23 are provided, these drawers being removable as in Fig. 1 and illustrating the different floor plans or layouts. The layouts on these drawers 22 may be similar to that illustrated in Fig. 4: or that illustrated in Fig. 6.
Referring now to Fig. 3, this model represents substantially a miniature of the building itself and comprises a block 30 resting upon a pedestal 31. This model is similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2 except that the drawers representing the different floors are placedin the base 31, these drawers being indicated by 16 and knobs for removing the drawers being indicated by 17. It will be understood that the drawers in this figure may carry either of the floor layout arrangements disclosed above.
Although the invention has been described and illustrated in connection with a skyscraper oifice building, it is obvious that it may be applied to other types of construction such as hospitals, factories, apartment houses, ships and even to illustrate the human body. In short, the invention may be applied anywhere where it is desired to show the character of different cross sections of a non-homogeneous solid.
The invention Will be found useful in many different Ways. It is useful for salesmen in selling stock in a building or in renting office space. It may be used by efliciency experts in increasing the efficiency-of a factory or other commercial enterprise as, for instance, by routing the products in the most expeditious manner. In short, it may be used by anyone interested in illustrating the construction of any of the buildings heretofore mentioned, either after the building is constructed or to visualize the building prior to actual construction. i
While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the .spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: 1. A model for a building comprising a body having a representation of the outside surface of the building thereon, a removable drawer dis osed in said body and corresponding to a cor of. the building, said drawer carrying a layout of the particular floor plan.
2. .A model for a building comprising a body having a representation of the outside surface of the building thereon, removable drawers disposed in said body and corresponding to the several floors of the building,
my hand.
