The present invention ,relates to new and useful improvements in electrical devices, and more particularly it pertains to a coil unit which although of broad application, is
particularly adapted for use in radio work.
- It is one of the'objects of thepresent invention to provide a coil unitin which a plurality of coils may be carried in'a single unit.
Itisa further'object of the invention to construct a device of the aforementioned character in such a manner that although the severalcoils are enclosed and shielded, access tothe coilsmay be readily had without damage to the enclosures thereof.
'15 It is a further object of the invention to provide adevice of the aforementionedcharacter in which anynumber ofcoils may be employed and so arrangedupon a common support that interference between the coils will be eliminated.

Retained in the slots 6 of the base 5, there is a coil supporting member 7 and said coil supporting member is cross shape in cross sectional form, and is of different diameters and various points throughout its length, that is to say, the elements which form the coil supporting member 7 are reduced in width in the directionof one of their ends.

The coil supporting member 7 comprises two members 8. Each of these members 8is provided with 'a' centrally disposed longituof the member and from the base of saidslot to the opposite end of the members 8, said members are'provided'with grooves or the ,dinally extending slot 9 which extends J throughout approximately half of the length like;10. This construction permits the two members 8 to be arranged in substantially right angular plane andconnected together by interlocking ofthe members, the grooved portion of each, member being received in a the slotted portion of the opposite member as indicated at12 in Figure 3. Thus .it will be apparent that when the members are placed together asdescribed, a coil supporting mem r 7 of cross shape in cross sectionalvfo'rm will be provided, and that the members 8 are so arranged and constructed that theincorresponding reduced portions will coincide in order to provide winding [spaces for the coils,

and 17 of variousdiameters, the member '15 being larger in diameter than the member 16 and the member 17 being smaller in diameter than the member 16 forms the intermediate shield member. The shield member 15 may be secured tothebase 5 in any desired manner and is of a length that its upper end willbeflush with the shoulder formed by the intermediatereduced portion of the members 8. Resting upon the upper end of the shield member 15 and secured thereto by suitable clips 18, there'is a ring like member 19 and this ring like member 19 forms the supportfor the second shield member 20.
This shield member 20 is of such'length that its upper end is flush with the shoulder Y formed by the end reduced portion of the members 8, and supported on said shoulder there is a ring like member 21 which is secured thereto by means of clips 22 and supported upon the ring like member 21 there is a third shield member 23 which has its free end partially closed by means of a ring like member 24 secured thereto by means of clips 25. It will be noted that the several clips 18, 21 and 25 are in the form of right angular members and are secured to their respective shield members by means of screws or the like 27 threaded into openings inthe shield members. The several shield members are provided with openings 30 through which the leads from the coils carried thereby may extend and as best illustrated in Figure 4, the members 8 which form the coil support are provided with openings 27' through which these leads of the coils pass and by means of which they may be secured to the coil support 7 before passing through the openings 30 of the shield members.
It is to be understood that the members 8, shields 15, 16 and 17, and the rings 19, 20 and 24, are formed from any suitable nonconducting material preferably of the same type and character as that employed in the manufacture of the base 5'.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel coil unit in which a plurality of coils of any desired capacity or character may be wound and subsequently enclosed and shielded against interference one with another.
lVhile the invention has been herein illustrated in a preferred form, it is to be under;- stood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A coil supporting device comprising a base member, a coil supportingmember removably carried thereby and projecting from the base member, a plurality of coils formed on said coil supporting member, and shielding means supported from the base and surrounding said coil supporting member, said shielding means comprising a plurality of separate sections of insulating material separating certain of the coils on the coil supporting member, and means for removably securing said sections together to form the shield.
2. A coil unit of the type described comprising a base member, two relatively long narrow members each provided with a slot extending lengthwise thereof throughout substantially half of the length thereof, whereby said members may be arranged together in interlocking right angular relatron, means for securing said members to the base, and shielding means earned by the base and adapted to enclose said coil supporting member said shielding means comprising a plurality of sections of different diameters, and means for detachably connecting said sections together.
8. A coil support and housing member comprising a base, a coil supporting member removably carried by said base, and adapted to support a plurality of coils, and means for enclosing said coil supporting member and comprising a plurality of cylindrical mem bers removably engaging said coll supporting member and means for removably securing said cylindrical sections together to form the enclosing housing.
4. A coil support and housing member comprising a base, a coil supporting member extending from said base, a cylindrical member carried by said base and surrounding a portion of said coil supporting member, a ring-like member carried by the upper end of said cylindrical member and removably secured thereto and other cylindrical members enclosing the coil supported member and supported by the ring like member carried by the first mentioned cylindrical member.
5. A coil support and'housing comprising;
ber enclosing an intermediate portion of said coil supporting member,means for supporting said second menti ned cylindrical member from the first mentioned cylindrical member. a third cylindrical member enclosing the remaining portion of the coil supporting member, means for supporting said last mentioned cylindrical member from the second mentioned cylindrical member. and means for removably attaching each of said cylindrical member supporting means to its rcspect-ivc cylindrical member.
