The present invention relates to boilers for generating vapor from liquid, and especially to boilers intended for vaporizing liquids having a high boiling point as compared to :water and which may be comparatively heavy. Such a liquid is mercury, mercury vapor now being utilized for driving elastic fluid turbines and for other purposes, such as a heating agent in connection with industrial processes.
The invention relates particularly to boilers of the type such as that disclosed in the application of myself and B. P. Coulson, Jr, Serial'No. 306,486, filed September 17, 1928, and has for its object to provide an improved construction arrangement in a boiler of this type.
For a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is .j directed to the accompanying description and the claims appended thereto.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a boiler drum or casing and 2 indicates boiler tubes depending from the lower portion thereof. Each boiler tube 2 comprises an outer tube 3 which at its upper end is fixed in an opening in drum 1 and is welded thereto as indicated at i, and a core 5 which is 5 located inside the tube 3 and provides a central passage 6 through which the liquid to be vaporized flows to the bottom of the tube, and an annular passage 7 through which the liquid flows upward and in which it is vapor- .Iized. Core 5 is held in spaced relation to outer tube 3 by means of projections 8 and 9 formed on the core. Inside drum or casing 1 and located in spaced relation thereto, isa bafile plate 10 provided with openings 11 through which the liquid to be vaporized is supplied to core passages 6. Baflieplate 10" lsheld in spaced relation to the adjacent surface of drum 1 by suitable projections 12 which may be in'the form of heads of studs threaded into the baflle plate. Associated with the boiler structureare filler blocks 13 which serve to occupy space within the drumsoas to decrease the volume which is required to be filled with liquid to be vaporstructure, which lagging may be fixed in place in any suitable manner. Liquid mercury is conveyed through opening 11 to core passage 6 by means of a tube 15, theupper end of which is suitably fastened, as by weld ing, in the bafile plate opening 11 while the lower end depends some-di stance into the core and is held positioned relatively thereto by an annular projection or enlargement 16. According to my invention, I construct the corefrom a plurality of layers of metal which closely engage each other, the metal being one which offers relatively high resistance to the transfer of heat. For this purpose I have found 8 per cent has a heat resistance of the order of'two and one-halftimes that of ordinary cold rolled steel, to be satisfactory. it being understood that the lower end of the tube is subjected to the most intense heat of the fire. By constructing the tube of successive layers of a metal having relatively high heat resistivity, but a small amount of heat will reach the liquid through passage 6.
In constructing a laminated core embodying my invention, a certain amount of void is left between the successive layers and this void becomes filled with liquid. In the core of mercury, mercury vapor 1s a relatively poor conductor of heat, and should the tube become excessively heated the mercury liquid between the lannnatlons fwould become va- 1 porized, thereby increasing the resistance to heat flow in the core. This functions to resist to a greater extent transfer of heat to the mercury flowing through the down tube, thus insuring that it remains relatively cool in spite of greater heat towhich the tube is subjected.
As a result, relatively cool liquid is still supplied to the tip of the tube for absorbing heat from it. Thus the liquid between the layers of the core serves as a sort of safety device against abnormaloperation of the tube.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1'. In a boiler structure, the combination of a casing and a boiler tube connected to the casing comprising an outer tube and a core in the outer tube having a passage for conveying liquid to the lower end of the outer tube, the wall of said core comprising a plurality of layers of sheet metal in close contact with each other having relatively high heat resistivity.
2. In a boiler structure, the combination of acasing and a boiler tube connected to the casing comprising an outer tube and a core in the outer tube having a passage for con veying liquid to the lower end of the outer tube, the wall of said core comprising a sheet of metal having high heat resistivity spirally metal of high heat resistivity in close contact with each other.
5. A tubular core for a boiler tube the wall of which comprises a plurality of layers of silicon steel in close contact with each other.
6. A tubular core for a boiler tube the wall of which comprises a sheet of metal of high heat resistivity spirally wound on itself to provide a plurality of closely contacting layers.
