This invention relates to improvements in rollers, and particularly to that kind of rollers used for feeding aperrolls or perforat ed sheets in power riven typewriting ma- 5 chines or perforatingmachines in which means are provided at the ends of the roller for positively engaging. the sheet to be fed. Such rollers are usually provided with circumferentially arranged; studs or projec 1o tions at their ends which are adapted to engage perforations arranged along the side edges 'of the sheet. Since the wi h of the sheet varies with atmospheric conditions which affect its temperature and moisture content, unless such conditions are nearly uniform, the perforations at one side of the" sheet fail'to register with the projections on the roller, or the sheet buckles between its ends, and its perforations which control the machine fail to register exactl with the parts to be controlled thereby. this difiiculty, it has been pro used to provide thepro3ectionsat one on of the roller movable end sometimes fail to register.
The-object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for moving the; projections at opposite ends of the roller equal distances laterally so that the expansion or contraction of the sheet is evenopposite sides of the middle ly distributed on of the roller.
Another object of the invention is to 10- vide a roller of this kind in which the s eet engaging projections atthe ends of the rolle;
er are connected by means arranged within the roller for moving them equaldistances toward or from each other.
' To these and other ends, the invontion'consists'in the construction and arran ment of 0 headed screws 17 and 18'thread'ed in; d1a-' metrically opposite tapped, openings in the parts that will appear from the ollowin description when read in'oon'unction wit the accompanying drawing t e novel features being pointed out in the end of .the specification.
claims at the In the drawing; v Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a feed roller illustrating one possible embodiment of the invention; l v
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fi 3 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of therewith are hollow'cores or sleeves 3 and and spaced from the sleeve 4 is a secon sleeve 5, and secured in the slee es 4 and 5 and projecting from the end of the roller is atubular member 6 in which a stub shaft 7 is mounted. The stub shaft 7 is mounted at its. inner end in a bushing 8 and extends through the tubular member 6 and is mounted in the frame by means of the lock nuts 9.
Mounted on the tubular member 6 and slidable thereon to and from the'end of the body 1 is a ring 11 havingv circumferentially arranged studs or promotions 12 adapted to engage perforations provided therefor at the side of the sheet to be fed. Fixed inv this ring to move therewith and arranged substan-' tially parallel to the axis of the roller are the rods or shafts Band 14. Therods or shafts each other. At their inner ends t e rods 13 I and 14 operatively engage the ends of levers 15 and 16 pivoted intermediate their ends on tubular member 6. Theoppo'site' ends ofv the levers 15 and 16 operatively engagerods or shafts 19 and 20 which extend longitudinally.
,/ rings through the roller and have a. ring 21 secured thereto at their outer ends by any suitother of said rings through the levers 15 and 16 and the rods connected therewith. The 11 and 21 are hence readily adjusted to the width of the sheet and automatically ad- 'ust themselves thereto, such adjustment bemg substantially equal in opposite directions roll machines or the like comprising from the middle of the sheet so that rfora- 'tions or othermatter appearing on t e sheet receive but slight lateral displacement on the er. a v The sleeve or collar 3 mounted in the end 1-. of the roller projects laterally therefrom to provide a support 23 on which the ring 21 is slidably mounted.
Although only one embodiment of the invention is shown and described herein, it will be understood that this application is intended to cover such changes or modifications as come within the spirit of the invention or. scope of the'following claims, and although a roller for feeding a master sheet is 'de-. scribed, a roller thus constructed will found useful wherever sheets are to be positively fed by means of rollers.
I claim:
1. A sheet feeding roller for typewriting acylindrical body portion, a ring arrange at each end of said body portion and movable toward and from the ends thereof, means operatlvel connecting said rings for im arting simu .taneous movement thereto, an means on said rings for positively engaging a work sheet.
2. A sheet feeding roller or typewriting cylindrical body portion, a ring arranged at each end of said body portion and movable toward and from the ends thereof, a rod projecting inwardly from each of said rings,
means operatively connecting the inner ends j V of said rods for moving the rings simultaneously in opposite directions, and means on the rings for positively engaging a work sheet. I
3. A sheet feeding roller for typewriting machines or the like comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, a ring arranged at each end of said body portion and movable f toward and from the ends thereof,,a lever pivoted in said body portion, means operatlvely connecting the opposite ends of said aerator:
lever with said rings, and means on said rings for positively en aging a work sheet- 4. A sheet f ing roller for typewriting machines or the like comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, a ring arran d at each end of said body portion and mova le toward and from the ends thereof, a lever pivoted in said body portion and arranged to swing in a planeparallel with its axis a rod operatively connecting each end of 15 said lever with one of said rings, and means 01x11 said rings for positively engaging a work s eet.
5. A sheet feeding roller for typewriting machines or the like comprising a hollow cylindrical body ortion, a ring arranged at each end of said y portion and movable toward and from the ends thereof, a pair of levers pivoted in said body portion and arranged to swing in planes parallel with its axis, a pair of rods secured toeach of said rings at one end and operatively connected .with said levers at their other ends, and means on said rings for positively engaging a work sheet. 7 I,
- 6. A sheet feeding roller for typewriting machines or the like comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, a ring arranged at each end of said body ortion and movable toward and from the en s thereof, a support secured in said bod portion, a plurality of levers pivoted on said support, a pair of rods corresponding-to each of said levers one secured in each of said. rings and operatively connected with opposite ends of one of said levers, and means on said rings for positively en agin a work sheet.
. A s eet feeding roller for typewriting machines or the like comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, a ring arranged at each end of said body portion and movable toward and from the ends thereof, a pair of levers having arms of al length, rods connectin one arm of ea zli, of said levers with one 0 said rings and the other arms with the other of said rings, and means on said rings for'positively en aging a worksheet. In witness whereof I ave hereunto" signed my name.
