This invention relates to improvements in head motions for looms and it is the gel firal object of the invention to improve the con.-
struction and operationof the so calledlock knife for the vibrator levers ofa Knowles "loom. 7 The so-called Knowlesloom employs a harness mechanism provided with two spaced continuously rotating mutilated cylinder 1 gears between which lie a series of vibrator levers the position of which is determined by a pattern chain. When the vibrator lever is raised by the chain it engages the top cylinder and any tendency of the vibrator gear to move out of mesh with it is resisted byrthe chain. When the vibrator gear is in mesh with the lower cylinder, however, the upward thrust from that cylinder cannot be resisted by the chain and it is necessary to provide some form of lock to hold the levers when they are in down position. Inasmuch ascertain vibrators are up and others are down on each pick of the loom it is necessary to apply the lock on every loom beat. When making a pick-out to correct a mispick the sequence of movements of the harnesses for the immediately preceding picks must be reversed and this is conveniently accomplished by means of are'verse gearing interposed between the bottom cylinder and the drive for the pattern chain cylinder.
As heretofore made the lock knife has been Y actuated from a cam mounted on the shaft of the lower cylinder but because of the proximity of the latter to the reverse gearing there has been very little. room for the cam and the latter had consequently been made very small. Also, in previousconstructions, the arm which'engages the cam was mounted directly. on the shaft to which the lock knife supporting arms were secured and the only means of varying the amount of movement of the lock knife was to vary the length of the cam engaging arm. In a loom head motion having a rotating actuator cylinder and vibrator lever to cooperate therewith, a lock device for the lever, a cam movable with the cylinder, a pivoted lever to cooperate with the cam and move therewith as the cylinder rotates, a link capable of attachment to thepivoted lever at any one of a plurality of positions relatively to the pivot of the lever, and a lever interposed between the link and the lock device to transmit movement to the latter derived from the link, the time of movement of the first named lever being independent of the extent of movement of the link.
8. In a head motion for looms having upper and lower oppositely rotating actuator cylinders geared together and a vibrator lever located between the gear, a lock knife for the vibrator lever, a supporting lever for the lock knife pivoted adjacent the axis of one of the cylinders, reverse mechanism carried by the said one cylinder, a cam carried by the other cylinder and operating connections between the cam and the supporting lever to rock the-latter periodically as the cylinders rotate.
