WIlN'DOW CONSTRUCTION This invention relates to window construction and more particularly to means for securin window panes in place within a sash.
In the drawing wherein are illustrated several modifications of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a view ofa window frame having a glass pane secured therein;

Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views of modified forms of construction.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the sash 10 is composed'of a frame member 11 and a retaining strip 12, the latter being secured to the frame by means of the bolts 13. Disposed within the channel formed between the frame member'll and retaining strip 12, is a thin aluminum strip 14 of U-shaped cross section. The U shaped strip 14 is spaced. from the bottom of the channel in the sash by means of cork spacer blocks 15, two of which are ordinarily employed in each side of the frame.
Disposed within the channel shaped strip 14 is a pane of glass 16 which is spaced from the sides of the channel shaped strips by means of cork strips 17. The 'edge'of the glass is spaced from the bottom of the, channel shaped strips by means of resilient nondrying putty 18. The strip of putty 18 is formed by an extruding process in order that the same will be of uniform thickness along the entire sides of the frame.

I However, since both the strips 14 and 17 are composed of non-erosive materials, the fillet 20 of putty need not be provided, since any moisture which may enter the channel formed in the frame wouldin no way cause deterioration; of these strips.
In assembling the, structure described, the retaining strips .12-are forced toward the frame member 11 to put the cork strips 17 u k under compression to form a tight joint be tweenthe glass and the frame and the retaining. strips are then secured in this .position to-maintain1 the".joint.- Y
The construction abovedescribed allows '0 for relative lateral movementbetween the frame member and the glass when the latter is subjected to lateralvpressure and alsoal lows for longitudinal movement of the glass with respect to. the framedue to relative 5 expansion betweenthe glass andzthe frame. The structure isiespecially designed to accommodate this longitudinal-movement between glass and aluminum which have a rela tively great difference of thermal coefficients of expansion, but it is equally well adapted to any two substanceshaving different coefficients of expansion. When, for example, a strong'wind is "blowing against the'pane of glass,- the glass will be forced in one direction and slightly further compress one of the cork strips 17, and also one of the putty fillets'20on the leeward side ofthe glass. Upon. abatement of this'wind pressure upon the glass'the putty and corkstripswill resume their original shape. 1 .During expansionor "contraction of the frame and glass there will be relative longitudinal movement of the two-only at the top and sides of the window. There will be no relative movement between the glass and the frameat the lower edge, since the. weight of :theglass always maintains the same seated within the channelshaped strip. The longitudinal movement of the glass 3 withinthe frame at the top and sides of the frame may cause a separationbfthe-glass from the putty fillets 20, but this separation would notallow any appreciable amountof .water to enter in between the glass and the W fillets at the sides and top of the window. Should water enter between the glass and fillets 20-it would jbevery dilficult for it to pass from the-channelto .the other side of I the glass. 1 In order to positively preclude i by Letters Patent is:

Although the: foregoing description is necessarily ofa detailed character in order to completely set: forth thepreferred enibodiments of the invention, it is to be undrsto'od that-the specific terminology "is not intended toibe restrictive or confining and it. isto be further understood that various rearrangements .of parts and modifications of structural detail may be resorted to. without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.

In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, resilient spacing blocks between the bottom of said channel and said strip, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, resilient means disposed in the bottom of said strip for spacing said pane therefrom, and cork strips interposed between the sides of said strip and said pane to permit relative lateral and longitudinal movement between said frame and said pane.

In window construction, a sash frame having a channeltherein, a strip of U shaped cross sectionedisposed within said channel, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, resilient means disposed in the-bottom of said strip for spacing said pane therefrom, cork strips interposed between the sides of said strip and said pane to permit relative lateral and longitudinal movement between said frame and said pane, and means for precluding'withdrawal of said cork strips from the U shaped strip during relative longitudinal movement of said frame and saidpane.

In window construction, sash frame having a channel therein, a metallic strip of U' shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, resilient spacing blocks interposed between the bottom of said channel and said strip, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, resilient means disposed in the bottom of said strip for spacing said pane therefrom, cork strips interposed'between th sides of said strip and said pane to permit re ative lateral and longitudinal movement between said frame and said paneyand means for precluding withdrawal ofs'aid cork strips from the U shaped strip during relative longitudinal movement of said frame andsaid pane.
' 7: In window vconstruction, a sash frame having a channel therein, an aluminum strip of U shaped cross section disposed within said channel, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said aluminum strip, a strip of extruded resilient non-drying putty-disposed in the bottom of said aluminum strip for spacing said pane therefrom, cork strips interposed between the sidesof said aluminum strip and said pane to permit relative lateral and longitudinal movement between said frame and said pane,
and means comprising projections on said aluminum strip for precluding withdrawal of said cork strips therefrom during relative longitudinal movement of said frame and said pane.

In window construct-ion, a sash frame having achannel therein, ametal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, cork spacing blocks interposed between the bottom of said channel and said metal strip, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said metal strip, a strip of extruded resilient non-drying putty disposed in the bottom of said metal strip for spacing said pane therefrom, cork strips interposed between the sides of said metal strip and said pane to permit relative lateral and longitudinal movement between said frame and said pane, and means comprising projections on said metal strip for precluding withdrawal of said cork strips from the U shaped strip during relative longitudinal movement of said frame and said pane.

In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a metal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed Within said channel, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, cork strips interposed between the sides of said metal strip and said pane and means comprising projections on said metal 'stripfor precluding withdrawal of said cork strips from said U shaped metal strip during relative movement of said frame and saidrpane. r

In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a metal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, and cork strips interposed between the sides of said channel and the sides of said metal strip to permit relative movement between said frame and said pane.

In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a metal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, a. pane of glass having its edge'portions disposed within said strip, cork strips interposed between the sides of said channel and the sides of said metal strip to permit relative movement between said frame and said pane, and means for precluding relative movement between said metal strip and said cork strip.
12. In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a metal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, a pane of glass having its edge portions disposed within said strip, and cork strips interposed between the sides of said metal strip and said pane and between the sides of the channel and the sides of the metal strip to permit relative movement between said frame and said pane.
13. In window construction, a sash frame having a channel therein, a metal strip of U shaped cross-section disposed within said channel, a pane of glass having itsedge portions disposed within said strip, cork strips interposed between the sides of said metal strip and said pane and between the sides of the channel and the sides of the metal strip to permit relative movement between said frame and said pane, and means for on the edge portion of the pane of glass permitting relative movement between the sheath and the glass, and resilient means i in the bottom of the channel for receiving the sheath.
