This invention relates to devices ydior ,loeating sunken vessels yto facilitate raising tlleeof.-
The primary object of the/present inl-vention is topnovide animproved-.dee -O the above kind which maybe conveniently arranged upon a submarine or @ther vessel, and which will., visn the .event ef Stnlnngof .the
/vessel,*permitahereleaseoa noator buoyant w marker, adapted .to iloat onithesurfaccof the mater abovethe cesse-Lto indicaterztlnepestion of the latter, .whereby a grappling .device may be lowered and engaged with astur- Yther grappling member, `fired on :the sunken vesseL-to raise thelatter.

Means are provided for eiectively securing the .cover of the compartment; in closed position so thatrit mayfrbeiread-ily nevleased romsthe interior of ,the-messel, `lto 25. forcibly. open the said `cover v xwhen released,
to project the buoyant markeryfnom the conlpartment .vvhen the `cover tis opened, `and to notifythe occupants of the vessel whenthe cable is ,paying ,out properly fto :permtfthe 30 marker' ato rise J :toi .the surface 1of the walter..
Rigid 'grappling members are ,provided on .theoutsde ,of the vessel adjacent the Acompartment .to facilitate engagement A.otra .co- Y .operating grappling member with oneof ythe 55 same when `said cooper-ating grappling mem- Vber is lowered fromay salvaging vessejl at the point `Wjhere fthe buoy-ant -51nar`ker is lfound, thereby facilitating raising ,of,the Sunken vessel.
The invention consists inthe novelfifnrm, combination .and ,.arnangement ,of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown the accompanying drawings, and Claimed In :the drawings: y A

fRefer-ning in, detail to :the drawings, in- (lcates .a submarine .or Aother vessel :Whose vdeck'zfloor16 isapertured .to receive a metallic -compart-ment*7I :with Athe zcover 8 thereof disposed substantially flush with saidvdeck -loorn 4Freely,mounted in :the uppern portion xof the ,compartment '7-so .as to be readily displace- .able therefrom. isa. loator buoyant marker i9 having abottomeye 10, 2or the like, .to which lis attaehe'droneend oa .cable 11. .Journaled compartment '7 is a .drumlQ on which A.the l`cable 1'1 is=normalllyavoundl and attached at its other end. 1
' Theoator marking fbuoy 9 "is disposed on .sa 'horizontal 'supporti-ng ring i3 which is -yie'ldablysuspended inthe compartment7 by Withnandamounted upon :thebottomo the --cover 8 -is-.opened-andthe marker Vislreleased. v
`'rlhe cover `8 is hinged at one side .to the top :of the compartment?, as at 15, and `:at theop- =posite side 'the .cover fhasa keeper aoengagehable by a swnginglatchhool 17 Vtobold the cover closed, .The iatchfhoek v1^? `is, :carried through the side of the compartment and a packing box 19 carried by the latter, the outer end of shaft 18 being engageable by a key 20 to permit turning of the same andV release of the latch-hook 17 by an authorized person within the sunken vessel. y
Mountedv in a guide 21 on the inside of the compartment 7 adjacent the latch-hook 17 is a vertically movable rack-bar 22 whose teeth are engaged by a pinion 23 carried by a further shaft 24 similar to shaft 18Y and jour-` naled in a like manner in the side of lthe compartment 7 When .the rackbar 22 is lowered and the'cover 8 is closed, the upper end of said rack-bar impinges the under side of said cover, so 'that when the latch-hook 17 isreleased and the rack-bar is raised by turning shaft 24, the cover 8 is forcibly started open. The opening of the cover is Vassisted and completed by means of a spring device 25' consisting of an angular spring member coiled intermediate its ends as at 26 and having one arm attached to the side of thecompartment 7 adjacent the hinge 15, the other larm thereof having a free end provided with a roller 27 bearing against and exerting an upward pressure upon the under. side of said cover. Y Y' v y A spring hammer l28 is attached at one end to the bottomlwall of the compartment 7. This hammer embodies a spring member coiledintermediate its ends as at 29 and hav-V 1 ing a freeY arm provided with a lateral terminal extension 30 arranged to be intermittently engaged by a lateral arm 31 on one end of the shaft of drum 12 to intermittently raise permit the float or marking buoy 9 to rise to the surface of the water.
Rigidly carried by the sunken vessel adjacent the compartment 7 and the bow of the vessel are hooks-33 or like grappling devices which may be readily engagedbya .further is lowered from a rescue vessel 35 adjacent the point where the float or marker 9 is found floating on the surface of the water. In this way, the raising and salvaging of the sunken vessel is facilitated. l
In operation, the cover is opened in the i j event of the vessel sinking. This is yeffected by the spring device 25 when the latch-hook ing of the cover, the float 9 is released andY von the rescue vessel, the sunken vessel may then be readily raised to salvage life and property on the same.Y .u Minor changes are contemplated within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. Y Y
W'hat I claim as new is:
1. In a devicerof the class described, a compartment having a drum anda lloat'therein, a cable connecting'the float and drum and 1 wound on the latter, a spring hammer mounted on and arranged` and tensioned to strike the bottom of said compartment, and means operatively connecting the drum and hammer for intermittently raising and releasing the latter as the drum is rotated by paying out thecable therefrom.
2. In a devicerof the class described, a compartment having a drum and a float therein, a cable connecting the float and drum and' wound on the latter, a spring hammer mounted on'and arranged and tensioned to strike thebottom of said compartment, and means operatively connecting the drum and hammer for intermittently raising and releasing th latter as v the drum is rotated by :paying out the cabletherefrom, said last namedxmeans comprising a shaft for the drum having a lateralarin and a lateral eX- tension on the hammer arranged in the path of said lateral arm.
,3. In a .device of the class described, a compartment having a oat therein, a cable connectingV the floatV and compartment, a
cover. for said compartment, means to re- ,j
leasably hold said cover closed, and a -supporting member yieldably suspended in -said `compartment and :having the float ldisposed thereon, the suspending means-for said supporting member being adapted to beplaced underv tension when the cover is closed for forcibl ro'ectinv th fl t f grappling device orhook 3 4 when the latter y p l] c e Oa rom 'hold said cover closed, and a supporting member yieldablyY suspended in said compartment and having the lioat disposed thereon, the suspendingmeans for said supporting member being adapted to be placed under tension when the cover is closed for forcibly -projecting-the-float from the compartment ywhen the cover is opened, and
CTI
means including a manually operable vertically movable rack-(bar bearing on the under side of said cover for starting the latter open.
5. In a device of the class described, a compartment having a float therein, a cable connecting the float and compartment, a cover for said compartment, means to releasably hold said cover closed, and a supporting member yieldably suspended in said compartment and having the float disposed thereon, the suspending means for said supporting member being adapted to be placed under tension when the cover is closed for forcibly projecting the float from the compartment when the cover is opened, and means including a manually operable vertically movable rack-bar bearing on the under side of said cover for starting the latter open, and a spring device having a free arm bearing against the under side of said cover to assist and complete opening of said cover.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
