TOP FRAME AND GRID CONSTRUCTION FOR O PEN TOP GAS RANGES Filed Feb. 24. 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gmc/nto@ Patented Aug. 16, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT oFF-ice THOMAS E. TAYLOR, OF IANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TOATHE PANY, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, CORPORATION OF TAPIAN STOVE COM- OHIO TOP FRAME AND GRID CONSTRUCTION FOR OPEN' TOIPv GAS RAN GES Application illed February 24, 1930.
This invention relates generally to gas so constructed and arranged as to reduce dissipation of heat to a minimum.
Another object of the invention is to prom vide a top frame or key plate for ranges of the character described which is provided with a plurality of grids which are disposed over the burners respectively, so as to provide a receptacle support; and in which each of thegrids is made up of a plurality of sections frame whereby by conduction. other object of the invention is to p vide a range of the character described'haw 26 supported over ing a top rame having a plurality of grids thereon which are disposed over the burners respectively, and in which each of the burners is provided with an air plate which is -the burners and so constructed and arranged as to direct the secondary air for supporting combustion into the bases of the liame jets and to prevent flow of air up and around a receptacle supported 80 on the grid.
v ceeds and by re frame constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of one section of the ame;
ig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation disclosingr a portion of the top frame with a burner arranged therebeneath together with the air plate supported on the burner; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional 'view illus- Character l designates the top of Serial No. 430.7555. trating the relative position of the air plate and burner nozzles. r
Referring now to the drawings, reference an open top gas rangehavi'ng a top frame or key plate which. is made up of a pair of sections 2 and 3 which are supported on shoulders 4, 5, 6 and provided on th of the stove.
a ly substantially rectangular cast integral with'the frame sections. Each of the grids is which are preferably cast integral with the frame and grids. Each of the grids also 'lf y clearly in Fig. 1. Secured over burners 17 is an air plate 19 h aving a plurality of radially disposed slots -'therein through which thev nozzles on the burners roject.
flhe air plate i9 with the slots arrange( there` 30 the efficiency of the flame and is particularly desirable when the fuel used is a. gas such as propane.
It will be seen that each ofthe grids is made up of a pair of sections which are spaced apart and that each grid is connected with the frame at onlyfour points. This arrangement reducesjdissipation of heat from the burner by conduction through the arms of the grids and thus materially increases the eficiency of the range. AIn order to strengthen 100 the grids and add rigidity .to the top frame;
the adjacent grid sections are connected with each other by arms 20 which are preferably cast integral with the frame sections. The burners disclosed are of standard construction and are supplied with gas through a manifold 21. The supply of gas to each`o the burners is controlled by valves 22, 23, 24 and 25. The valve 26 controls the supply of gas to the oven burner (not shown) Various changes may be made in the details of construction as well as in the manner of constructing and assembling the various parts without departing Jfrom the spirit o my invention. The embodiment of my invention herein disclosed is illustrative only and is not to be considered in a limiting sense. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a gas range, the combination o a frame. a burner disposed below said frame, a grid disposed over said burner and supported from said frame at no more than four space points, said grid being made up of a plurality of sections which are spaced .apart and independently supported on the frame whereby to reduce dissipation of heat by conduction.
2. In an open top range, the combination ot a plurality of burners. a frame over sai burners and consisting of a pair of sections, eachsection having a pair of grids disposed above said burners respectively, each of said grids having means securing the same to said frame at equi-spaced points whereby to reduce dissipation of heat.
3. In an open top range, the combination of a plurality of burners, a frame disposed above said burners and having a plurality of grid portions extending over said burners respectively, means securing said `grids to said frame at no more than four spaced points whereby to reduce dissipation of heat, each grid being made up of a pair of sections spaced apart and independently supported on said frame.
4. In an open top gas range, the combination of a plurality of gas burners supported within the upper. portion of the range, a frame extending over the burners and consisting of a pair of sections each of which is provided with grids which are disposed over said burners respectively, each grid consisting of a plurality of arms shaped t0 provide a receptacle support., and having a plurality of separate sections. and means independently connecting each ot said sections with said frame at a plurality of spaced points, said means comprising lugs which are so spaced and so connected with the Jframe and grid sections as to reduce materially the dissipation of heat away from the burner "by conduction.
5. In an open top as range, the combination of a plurality o gas burners supported within the upper portion of the range, a frame extending over the burners and consistin of a pair of sections each of which is provi ed with grids which are disposed over said burners respectively, each grid consisting of a plurality of arms shaped to provide a receptacle support, and haVing'separate sections which are spaced apart and independently supported on said frame whereby to reduce heat dissipation, each of said grids being substantially rectangular in shape, an air plate dispose below each of said grids and having a plurality of slots therein disposed in alignment with the gas orifices in the burner. 4
6. In an open top gas range, the combination of a plurality of burners, frames disposed above said burners and having a plurality of grid portions disposed over said burners respectively and forming receptacle supports, each receptacle support consisting of a plurality of separate sections which are independently secured to said frame at spaced points, a plurality of lugs connecting said receptacle support with said frame, said lugs being so spaced and disposed as to materially reduce the conduction of heat away from said burners by said receptacle supports, each receptacle support including a plurality of radially disposed arms disposed between the gas orifices of the burners.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aix my signature.
Y THOMAS E. TAYLOR.
