GAS RANGE AND BURNER THEREFOR.

gas ranges and burners therefor and it per tains to certain improved constructions and arrangements which will be hereinafter de scribed.
The primary object of the present invention is the supporting of a combined blue flame radiant heat burner midway an unincumbered housing, whereby the lower part of the housing constitutes a broil-ing oven, and the upper portion of the housing a baking oven.
A further object of the present invention is providing combined horizontally arranged radiants with blue flame burners beneath it and to support a bafiie immediately above the radiant burners, the said bafie only partially extending across the housing, whereby the heat from the radiants 1s radiated and flows around the edges of the bafiie and rapidly heats the baking oven, and at the same time provides a broiling oven beneath the burner.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a burner with horizontally arranged radiants which is constructed as a separate fixture to be readily lifted from its support and from its blue flame burner beneath whereby it is capable of repairwithout in any manner disturbing the blue flame burner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a burner comprising horizontally arranged radiants, and a bafie plate connected with the radiant supports whereby the radiants and bame are separate and independent members resting upon and are re movable together, for the purpose of re pair, or for any other reason.
A further object ofthe present invention is to provide a gas range with a vertical elongated housing unincumbered within the housing, and providing the unincumbered housing with a horizontally arranged radiant burner carrying a bafiie, whereby the construction of the oven is much simplified and cheapened.
Another object of my present invention is to arrange parallel blue flame burners approximately midway a vertically elongated housing, and provide horizontal radiants extending inward from the blue flame burners, the said radiants carrying a baflie above them, the said radiants and bafile resting upon and freely removable from the blue ame burners, for the purpose described.
Other objects of the present invention will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a part of the housing, the sectg transverse the said radiant, the blue flame burner, and bafie plate thereabove.
Fig. 2 is a section view through the housing on the dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in'the direction indicated by arrow.
Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the removable radiants and baffle plate, the blue flame burner being shown in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings in which,

My improved burner A is supported within the oven substantially or approximately at its center.
From the foregoing dwcription it will be observed that the housing 1 has its interior Wholly unobstructed, except by the burner and its cooperating parts, which will be presently referred to. This arrangement cheapens the construction of the oven and makes it relatively simple and cheap to construct.
My improved burner A comprises a manifold which consists of an inlet arm 7 the said arm being attached to the oven 1 at the point 8'. The inner end 9 of the manifold arm is connected with a manifold 10,
the opposite ends of this manifold being connected with the blue flame burners 11. The connecting portion 10 of the manifold is wholly closed whereas the burners 11 have outlets 12 at their inner sides. The manifold in addition to having the ends of its arm 7 attached. at the point 8 -is also attached to a transverse member 12' at the back of the housing and a transverse member 13 at the front .of the housing, the membar 12 being bolted to the wall of the housing as at 14 and the member 13 bolted to the housing as at 15. Therefore the manifold remains in the oven.
Immediately above the burners 11- are supported the inwardly extending radiants 16, the outer ends of the radiants resting in a U-shaped rail 17 and their inner ends in a U-shaped or slotted rail 18. Attached to these rails are vertically extending battle sup orts 19 which have a baffle 20 attached to t e supports both at its ends and at its center by suitable bolts 21. Arms 22 formed as a part of, or attached to the arms 19, have their lower ends constructed to fit on the burners 11, whereby the burner 6 with its cooperating constructions s mply rests freel upon the'burners 11, and may be lifted rom the burners as occasion may make it necessary. This burner and its cooperating parts are free from attachment to any other part of the burner constructlon making it freely removable for the purpose of repairing or replacing the radiants or for any other purpose.
Preferably I utilize a thermostatic housing 23 carrying a thermostatic lever having its lower end 25 controlling the flow of gas from-the housing into the outer end of.
the arm 7 of the manifold. The upper end of the lever is operatively connected with the outer end of. a thermostatic element 25 which extends into the oven. By means of a'regulating wheel 26 the thermostatic arrangement can be regulated for controlling the flow of gas for any desired regulated amount of heat in the oven. The said. thermostat and its construction involves the invention described in Meacham Patent No. 1,236,335, August 7, 1917, which describes 26 is set to the degree of heat desired in the oven for cooking any article. When the heat has reached that point then the ther mostat closes ofli the gas and; maintains the oven at that heat until the article is cooked. B a series of tests I find that in the use I of this burner there is considerable less gas used to maintain a predetermined heat than is necessary with the usual blue flame burner alone.
I have found that in the operation of the burner there is an absolutely perfect combustion. All of the gas passing through the burners 12 is abso utely consumed as it flows over the incandescent radiants. This is not the case with the ordinary blue flame burner and hence is a saving in gas to that extent. In addition the radiants cause a high rate of heat transmission as well as an equal distribution of the heat in I the its operation. Briefly speaking the wheel housing. The battle is for the purpose of preventing the heat from immediately rising above the radiants to its full extent making it liable to burn any article above. By means of this battle plate the majority of the heat is caused to flow out through the spaces 27 at the sides and ends of the-radiant burner and quickl establishes the desired adjusted heat in t e housing.
Attention is called to the fact that the bafiie 20 is not a division late of this housing as there is considerab e space all around the bafile, the bafile acting only as a bafile pure and simple. The housing istherefore uninterrupted both above and below the burner and its cooperating parts.
For the purpose of convenience in lighting the burners 12 I provide a pilot tube 28 which extends from a thermostatic housing 23 within the range housing 1 and this tube 28 has a burner 29 for one of the burners 11, and then extends across to the opposite side and furnishes a ilbt 30 for the burner 11 at the opposite si e. When, starting the burner the valve 31 is opened and a match touched to each'of the pilots 29 and 30 which ignites the burners 11.
Air is combined with the gas from the valve 23' so that combined air and gas in proper proportions is sup lied to the burn ers 11, and this mixture 0 air and gas fiows inwardly through the passages 12 over the surface of the radiants 16 heating them to incandescence, which adds much to the heat within the housing, enabling a saving in the 109 amount of gas consumed.

A gas range comprising an oven hav- 110 in a supported burner located therein, a ra iant above and supported to be removable independent of the said burner,',the radiant having a bafiie plate immediatelythereabove and of considerably less horizontal area than the horizontal area of the oven, for the purpose described.
' 2. A gas ran e having an oven,& burner supported within the oven, a radiant removably supported above the burner, said radiant carrying a bafile plate immediately there above, the radiant and battle plate being, bodily removable from the said burner, for the purpose described.
3. gas range comprising an oven havng a burner supported therein, of a radiant frame removab y supported upon the said burner, a radiant attached to the said frame, and a baflie plate immediately above the rad ant, said. bafile plalte attached to the radiant frame, whereby the radiant and bafile are removable together from the said burner.
4. A gas range comprising a housing, parallel blue flame burners supported within the housing between its ends, radiant supports radiants supported thereby, a bafile plate immediately above and attached to the radiants, the baflie plate being considerably smaller in area than the interior area of the housing.
5. A burner for a gas range comprising parallel blue flame burners, a baflle plate there above, radiant supports attached to the baflle plate, radiants within the said supports, said supports adapted to rest upon the said burners, for the purpose described.
6. A gas burner for gas ranges comprising parallel blue flame burners supported Within the gas range, a baffle plate above the said burners-having downwardly extending supporting arms at its edges, radiant supports connected with the said bafiie and removed therefrom to afiord a space for air and heat, and a radiant support at its center, whereby the device is adapted to operate as described.
7. A radiant construction for parallel blue flame burners of a gas range comprising a horizontal baffle plate carryin at its oppo site edges and at its center ra iant rail supports, horizontal radiants having their opposite edges supported in the said rails, the said device adapted to rest upon the said blue flame burners.
8. A radiant construction for blue flame burners of gas ranges comprising a bafiie plate, radiant supportingrails attached to but removed from opposite edges of the baflle, radiant supporting rails attached to its center, and radiants with their opposite edges supported in their rails, the said device adapted to be superimposed upon blue flame burners, for the purpose described.
