IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-PLANTER ATTACHMENTS FOR HOE'S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,174, dated February 6, 1877; application filed October 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN It. REYNOLDS, of Essex, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed-Planter Attachment for Hoes, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to that class of cornplanters or seed-droppers which are attached to and used in connection with an ordinary hoe.
My invention consists of a certain combination and arrangement of parts, which will be fully hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improvement, showing the same attached to a hoe-handle. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal longitudinal section on the line a' :c of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the slide-box, and Fig. 4 a `detached view of the device for attaching the seed-box to the hoe-handle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the seed-planter, and Fig. 6 is a detached view of the carrier-bar and adjustable slide.
The letter A represents the seed-box, which may be of any approved shape and constructed of any suitable material, in the present instance being semi-cylindrical in shape, and constructed partly of wood and partly of sheet metal, and having a swinging or hinged door, B, at its upper end for filling.
O represents a rectangular box, secured longitudinally along the lower edge at one side of the seed-box, and communicating with said seed-box, at or near the forward corner, by means of an aperture or opening, D.
rlhe box G may be constructed ot' any suitable material and attached in any convenient manner, in the present instance, however', being constructed of wood and provided with an upwardly-projecting outer side, and secured to the box A by means of screws c c passing through the extension of said side into the bottom of the seed-box. The letter E represents a reciprocating carrier, arranged to move back and forth in the box C, being provided with an adjustable stop, e, at its front end to limit its backward motion, its forward movement being limited by a stop, g, on its rear end. Said carrier is provided with an adjustable slide, F, arranged in a recess on one side of the carrier E, its rear end projecting backwardly out of the box, and extending along the side of the rear end of said slide, and being adjustably secured thereto by means of a bolt, H, passing through the carrier and a longitudinal slot, and provided with a thumbnut, I, by which it may be loosened or tightened at will. The recess in the carrier, with the carrier E, forms the seedpocket of the carrier, the size of which can be adjusted to suit dif'- ferent kinds of grain or seed by shifting said slide either backward or forward, as may be required. The bottom of the box C is provided near its center, with a discharge-opening, h, and the pocket in the carrier is so located re1- atively to this opening and the opening from the seed-box into the carrier-box that said pocket, when the carrier is moved fully forward, will be directly under the opening from the seed-box, in order to receive the seed, and when the said carrier is drawn back Will fall over the discharge-opening in order to drop the seed. The carrier is drawn automatically to its forward position by means of a spiral spring, K, secured to the under side of the box C at one end, and to the rear stop'of the carrier at the other, and is moved backward by means ofa strap, cord, wire, or other similar device, which extends along and may be fastened to the handle of the hoe, within reach of the operator.
Along the lower side of the bottom of the box is formed a longitudinal semicircular groove, L, which sets upon the lower end of the handle when box is securedto the same, and at one side of said groove is hinged or pivoted a semicircular strap, M, which can be made to embrace the lower side ofthe hoelar box C, for the purpose of adjusting the slide F.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the carrier-bar E, the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I adjustable stop e at one end, the stop g at the have hereunto set my hand in the presence other end, the slotted slideF, the set-screw H, of the subscribing witnesses. the nut I, the rectangular box G, the exterior JOHN R. REYNOLDS. spring K, and the seed-box A, having the Witnesses: opening D, the Whole being constructed and '.l. W. R. NICHOLS, arranged to operate substantially as described. FAY G. NICHOLS.
