Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ABIJAH S. PARKER, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF HIS RIGHT TO TRACY R. MORGAN, OFv SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HvDRANTvALvEs- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,169, dated February 6, 1877; application tiled June 28, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ABIJAH S. PARKER, of Binghamton, Newr York, have invented a new and Improved Valve Apparatus for hydrants and other purposes where stop-cocks are used, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is a novel construction and arrangement of a stop and waste valve, by which oneis always closed before the other is opened.
This improvement consists of an inside tube, B, conical at the top, a valveseat being formed in the upper end J, and Huted on the outside surface at G, so that the Waste Water or drip may escape freely when the hydrant is closed, and a movable outside shell, A, fitting closely to the inside tube B. and forming avalve-seat on the outer base of the inner tube at I, with a groove on the inside of said outer shell, near the bottom, at H, for packing, thereby preventing any leak or escape of fluid; and of a valve-rod, I), slotted at the top F, attached to the outside shell A, as shown in the drawing, by a bolt or pin, E, through the slot, and connecting with the ball-shaped valve O, moving inside the inner tube B, bythe operation of which the outer tube A is first pressed down upon the inside conical-shaped tube B, completely closing the Waste valve ,or drip G, and then forces the ball-shaped valve O down from the opening in the upper end ofthe inside tube B, allowing the fluid to pass freely.
The closing of the hydrant reverses the action, the stop-valve C being closed before the Waste-valve G is opened, preventing all Waste of fluid.
The valve-rod D can also be made by forming a shoulder down from the top a suitable distance, and passing the rod through a yoke formed in the outer shell, with a nut on top of rod, (or upper end,) leaving same space to play up and down as in the slot.
I claim- The combination, with the tube B, constructed with a conical valve-seat, J, and the drip-passage G, of the movable shell A and the stop-valve C, connected with the shell by a stem, D, the Whole being arranged in the manner described, whereby the stop-valve is closed before opening the drip-passage, and the drip-passage is closed before opening the stop-valve, as and for the object specified.
' ABIJAH S. PARKER.
