UNITED STATES PATENT Grrron. V
CHARLES LERSOH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN CIGAR'BUNCHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187 ,l49, dated February 6, 1877 application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES LERSOH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Bunching Machine, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved cigar-bunching machine; and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I j
My invention relates to an improved cigarbunching machine, by which the bunches may be turned out with great rapidity and perfection; and the invention consists of a sliding reciprocating former, having a lateral bunching-cavity, in combination with an adjustable apron and stretching-roller.
In the drawing, A represents a suitable frame or table, on which the bunching mechanism is supported. The hunching device consists of an inclined reciprocating former, B, that is guided in grooves or otherwise on stationary side supports B, which serve also as bearings for the stretching-roller D. The former B is guided at suitable inclination to the roller, to admit the easy feeding of the tobacco and the ready taking away of the bunches. It is connectedwith and reciprocated by a treadle, (J, actuated by the foot of the attendant, in downward direction, and by a cord, pulley, or/weight, springs, or equivalent device, (l, in upward direction. The reciprocating former B passes along the stretching-roller D, and is connected by a belt or apron, E, with the same, the apron being attached to the lower end of the former, then carried over the stretching-roller, and finally over an upper adj usting-roller, E, with{ratchet and pawl device, by which the apron is set to the size of bunches to he produced. The reciprocating former B is provided with a lateral concavity, a, into which the apron extends, and which serves to take up the required quantity of tobacco to form the bunch.
When the same is inserted, the downward mo tion of the former, in conjunction with the apron and roller, rolls the bunch until the upper end of the former passes below the roller and throws the bunch clear of the apron. A dishing top extension, F, of the former B takes up the bunch, so that the same may be readily taken off by the workman.
The cavity of the reciprocating former is large enough to admit the manufacture of any desired size of bunch by adjusting the apron accordingly. The hunch is delivered and taken off when the former stops at the end of the downward motion, and, on the completion of the upward motion, is ready for the insertion of the tobacco for the next bunch, producing the bunches thus in a rapid, uniform, and economical manner.
Having thus described myinvention, I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of reciprocating former B, having concavity a and extension F, with stretching-roller D, apron E, and roller E, arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES LERSOH.
