The air thus enters freely from the ash pit forwardly of the grid between the side bars 15 and passes beneath the coking shelf and through the perforations or slots 27 in the upright wall or grid which slots are never more than partially obstructed by the accumulated fuel. In this way the air comes into contact with the newly ignited fuel falling from'the coking shelf and is closely mingled with the gases in the most highly heated area, supplying an excess of oxygen to be mingled with these gases and to pass upwardly in contact with the fuel which is falling from the coking Y shelf, or about to fall therefroin.
I have thus described specifically and in detail a furnace structure and grate embodying the features of my invention in the preferred form in order that the nature and operation'ofthe same may be clearly understood, however, the specific terms herein are used descriptively rather than in' a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the claim.
