Description

I-I. C. BENSON.
- PEN-HOLDINGPENCIL-POINT PROTECTOR.
No.187,0 87. Patented Feb. 6,1877.
- M m dam N-PETERS, FNOTO LLTNOGRAPHEW. WASHINGYON o c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. BENSON, OF YONKERS, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH RECKENDORFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDING PENCIL-POINT PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,087, dated February 6, 1877; application filed October 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. BENSON, of
Yonkers, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ben-Holding Pencil-Point Protectors, of
which the following is a specification:
This invention is an improvement on the pen-holding pencil-point protector for which Letters Patent were granted to Reckendorfer and Palleske, April 4, 187 6, numbered 175,754.
In that device the pen-holder is stationary, and is protected or covered, when not in use, by a sleeve mounted and movable longitudinally on the unsplit portion of the pencil-pointprotecting tube.' The trouble with this arrangement is, that the sleeve is liable tomove back and uncover-the pen, and this gives rise to considerable inconvenience when the device is carried in the pocket.
To remedy the defect above noted is the object of the present improvement, which consists in using the pencil-pointprotecting tube itself as the covering-sleeve, the pen-holder being movable longitudinally Within the tube, so that the pen carried by it may be projected from, or withdrawn within, the point-protecting tube as occasion demands.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure .l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section, of a pen-holding point-protecting tube made in accordance with the invention.
A is the pen-holding and point-protecting tube. B is the pencil (J, the pen-holder, movable longitudinally within that part of the tube A beyond the point where the pencil-point protecting portion of the tube terminates. 011 the interior of tube A is a sliding sleeve, D, which connects with the pen-holder by means of a stud or rivet, a, the shank of which passes through a slot, 12, formed in, and lengthwise of, the tube A. The pen-holder, by means of the sleeve, can be moved out and in a distance equal to the length of slot 1). It is represented as projecting from the tube, and on the other hand it can be withdrawn within the tube far enough to cover and shield the pen which it carries. The pen-holder is tubular, thus permitting, when it is drawn fully back Within the tube, the point of the pencil B to enter the interior of the said pen-holder, and preventing the two from interfering. In lieu of a sleeve, D, a button on the outer end of stud a, or other suitable device connected from the exterior with the pen-holder, maybe used.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement on the pen-holding pencil-point protector described in Letters Patent No. 175,754, the same consisting in the combination, as herein shown and set forth, with the pencil-point-protecting tube, ofa penholder movable within and lengthwise of that part of the tube which is beyond the portion of said tube that is adapted to receive and protect the lead-pencil.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day of October, A. D. 1876. HENRY G. BENSON.
Witnesses:
EWELL A. DICK,
J os. RECKENDORFER.
