IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,050, dated February 6, 1877; application filed December 11, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. RYDER, of Islesborongh, State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Rein-Supporter, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved rein supporter or guard as attached to shafts, which are shown in section on line a; m, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved rein guard or supporter for vehicles of all kinds, by which the reins are prevented from getting under the whiffietrees or entangled by the tail of the horse, and by which they are conveniently kept separate in day or night time, dispensing with the wire guard on the dash-board, that prevents the chafing of the leather, and admitting the quick picking up of the reins on getting into the carriage.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawing, A represents a rein guard or supporter, which is bent of metal rods of suitable thickness, so as to form symmetrical eyes a, in which the reins are separately guided. Between the eyes a is a pointed and symmetrically-curved guide-piece, b, along which the reins are moved for being inserted into the eyes. A raised tongue or lip, d, ex-

tends from each eye above the lower end of the guides b, and leaves a small space between the tongue and guide end for introducing and taking out the rein. The tongues and guide ends form together a guard, to prevent the escape of the reins during use.

The tongues, eyes, and central guide-piece are preferably bent of one piece of ir0n,'and supported either by an upright standard or on inclined side standards B, branched at the lower ends, as in Fig. 2, according as the rein-supporter is used in connection with a vehicle having one or two shafts.

The standards are attached by bolts to the shafts in front of the dash-board, and the guard device placed somewhat higher than the dash-board, so as to support the reins without chafing the leather of the same.

The rein-guard may be readily applied to any vehicle,'and forms a cheap, simple, and convenient attachment for the purposesmentioned.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A rein guard or supporter placed on a supporting standard or standards of the vehicle shaft or shafts, and bent of one continuous piece of metal into a central guide-piece, b, eyes a, and guard-tongues d, substantially as set forth.
