This invention relates in'general to a pouring spout for containers of a type including a bottom or body portion hingedly connected to one wall of a discharge opening in the conz tainer and formed with resillent sectorshaped side wings concentric with the axis of hinging to frictionally engage the walls of said opening, so that the body portion normally serves as a closure for the opening and is adapted to be swung outwardly therefrom to serve as a pouring spout when it is desired to discharge the contents ofl the container through said opening. The side wings of the spout are' usually divergent from each other away from the body portion so as to resiliently engage the walls of the opening to hold the spout in closed position and maintain a tight engagement withthe walls of the opening when the spout is open.
' S0 One object of the-present invention is to provide a novel and improved pouring spout of this character embodyin novel and 1mproved features of constructlon whereby the vmovement of the spout outwardly of the opening is positively limited to prevent the spout from being accidentally disengaged from the container as the spout is swunginto open position.
Another object is to provide the side wings of the spout adjacent the edges thereof normally dlsposed within' the container with integral shoulders stamped laterally outwardly from the side wings to engage the inner walls of the container to limit outward movement of the pouring spout.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved construction at the inner edges of i the side wings to facilitate insertion of the pouring spout into the opening in assembling the spout upon a container.
Further objects are to provide a pouring spout of the general character described in which the side wings extend beyond the hing'ed end of the body portion so as to project into the openin in the container, and the wings have pro]ectionsadjacent the hinged point to prevent the spout from pulling outwardly rom the opening in the container when the spout is swung outwardly with the body portion at substantially right angles-to the wall of the 'container to which'the spout v is connected; to provide'a pouring spout of the character described embodying novel and improved 'features of construction whereby the spout can be easily, quickly and economicallgf stamped from one piece of metal, and can e easily and quickly assembled on a container, and to obtain other .advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description; x.

Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 'shown in the drawing, the reference char- V acter 1 designates a container of any suitable construction, having a top or cover 2. A discharge opening 3 is *formed in the top or cover g, said opening being substantially rectangular in Shape and provided at one end thereof with hinge notches 4 which form an injecting tongue 5 integral with the top or cover 2.
The' pouring spout is-preferably formed of sheet metal and includes a body porton or bottom 6 of substantially the same Shape as the dischargeopening 3 except that one end of the body portion is adapted to overlie the tongue 5 and the other` end is provided with a nose or extension.7. The' body portion is preferably approxim'ately the same width as the opening 3 and the sides thereof are provided with integral resilient wings 9 which 5 diverge from each other away from the body portion as shown in Figure 6 of the drawing. At one end of the body portion 6 of p the spout, the wings are extended to form hinge lugs 10, and the wings are preferably,
10 sector-shaped and concentric with said end of the body kportion. The free straight ed es i of the wings 9 vare bent or curved inwa ly toward each other at 11 s'o that they are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the width of the opening 3 in the container. In assembling the spout upon the container,
the hinge lugs 10 are inserted in the hinge notches 4 so that they lie against 'the inner- 'wengage one end of the opening opposite the hinge notches 4 so that the spout is accurately guided andheld against such movement in the opening as would dislodge the lugs 10 from the notches. With such a construction 86 it is necessary to limit the outward swinging movement of the spout to an angular position,
less than 90 to avoid the possibility of the' lugs 10 being pulledv outwardly from the hinge notches so as to disconnect the spout from the container. For this purpose the wings 9 are provided adjacent the meeting of their inner edges and their arcuate edges 12 and within the boundaries of said wings,
with outward projections 13 which are prefa erably stamped from the wings to provide Shoulders 14 projecting laterally from the planes of the wings and at substantially right angles thereto to engage the inner wall'of the' container as the spout is swung into open position as shown m Figures 2 and 5 of the drawing. ,The projections preferably incline toward the planes of the respectivel wings as at 1'5 in the direction of the rear edges of the wings so that the projections may easily sli past 'the side edges of the opening 3 as t e spout is inserted into the opening. These projections can-be conveniently formed by slitting the wings as sit-16 and pressing portions of the wings at the rear sides of the slits outwardly to form Shoulders 14. With this construction, it will be observed that the Shoulders 14 provide positive sto s to. limit opening swinging -movement o the spout. To remove the spout from theopening 3, the wings may be pressed together to move the Shoulders 14 away from the edges of the opening.
Where it is desired that the spout shall open into a position with the body portion 6 at' substantially'right angles to the wall ,of the 73 container in which the opening 3 is formed, it is necessary to provide some means adjacent the hinging point of the spout to prevent the hinge lugs from being pulled from the hinge notches. For this purpose, I ma utilize on each of the wings a projection 1 identical in construction wlth the projections 13, as shown in- Figures 7 8 and 9. These projections 17 are arranged adjacent the in e lugs 18 so as to engage the inner side 30 of -t e wall of the container When the s out is swung into open position as shown in igure 7 of the drawing. With this construction the projections 13 limit pivotal movement of the spout into open position, while the projec' ;F5 tions 17 hold the inged end of the spout against accidental disconnection from the container. p
Man modifications and changes in the details o construction of the spout will appear to those skilled'in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention and therefore I do not desire to b'ev understood as limiting myself in the construction and use of the lnvention, except as required by the 19,5 following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
