The present invention relates to car door construction. More particularly the present invention relates to construction relating to the sliding doors of railway house cars. The
5 present invention has been illustrated and will be described in connection with the type of house car generally known as automobile car. Such cars have a double door construction for controlling the closure of a doorway of extraordinary width such as is required for lading of extra large dimensions, as for example automobiles. As the description proceeds, however, '1'. will be clear that the invention is not limited to the door construction of automobile cars, but is equally applicable to the doors of other types of car and to sliding doors of many other types whether used on cars or not.
An object of the present invention is to 0 provide a sliding door construction which will automatically latch itself when the door is moved to a closed position.
A further object is to provide house car construction having an improved door which 5 serves to tie the side plate and side sill together when the door is in closed position and which will automatically latch itself when the door is moved to closed position.
A further object is to provide a sliding 0 door construction which requires in its construction the stocking of a minimum of kinds of parts, which is s mple, sturdy and little likely to get out of order.
A further object is to provide a sliding door construction well adapted to meet the needs of commercial service.
Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.

Referring first to Figure 1, the numeral 10 indicates the side of a railway house car, which, as referred to above, takes the form of an automobile car. Said house car is provided with the main door 11 and the auxihary door 12, both of which may be opened to provide a doorway of extraordinary width. The auxiliary door 12 is provided with a door post or door jamb, which post or jamb is preferably rigidly secured to said auxiliary door 12. The door jamb chosen for illustration includes the angle member 13, which provides a. sturdy construction and which may have secured to the upper and lower extremities thereof certain castings or forgin which will be referred to hereinafter, which have functions of latching the auxiliary door in closed position and which interengage with parts rigid with the side sill and side plate of the car when said door is in closed position,
to tie said side sill and side plate together. The angle member 13 is placed with its reentraut angle presented toward the inside of the car and toward the doorway controlled by the main door 11, whereby the handling of extra wide pieces of lading is facilitated. Such extra wide pieces may be inserted diagonally, it being a simple matter, of course, to cut away the inner corner of the filler post 13-A and nailing strip 13-8 for this purpose.
The doors 11 and 12 may have the usual or any preferred weather stripping at their forward and rear edges. Inasmuch as said weather stripping forms no part of the present invention, it need not be described in detail herein.
The present invention contemplates a door structure which is raised when it is intended to move said door structure to open or close the doorway. By reference to Figure 4, it will be observed that the side sill 14 is pro vided with brackets 15 for supporting a track member 16, which track member 16 presents a horizontal surface. The side plate 17 of the car has secured thereto an overhanging flange member 18, which cooperates with the upper edge of the door structure to guide said upper edge in the opening and closing sliding movements of the door structure. The numerals 20-20 represent rollers adapted to ride upon the track member 16 when it is desired to move the door structure. At other times the door structure is adapted to rest flatwise upon the track member 16, whereby the friction between said door structure and said track member will prevent accidental slamming or creeping of said door structure in car shunting or switching. By reference to Figure 1, it will be noted that rollers 20- 20 are provided adjacent to the front and rear edges of each of the doors 11 and 12. By reference to Figure 8, it will be noted that each of the rollers 20 is carried withina corresponding roller retainer 21. The roller rctainer at the lower lefthand corner of each of the doors is pivotally supported by a corresponding bracket 22, whereas the roller retainer 21 at the lower right-hand corner of each of the doors is pivotally supported by a corresponding bracket 23. Said brackets 22 and 23 may be riveted to their corresponding door or doors. A rotatable rod 24 is journaled in bearings 25 and 26, forming part of the brackets 22 and 23, respectively. Said rod 24 may have squared ends, whereby to be. noim'otatably eoni'iected to cum members 27-27 located at the two extremities oi said rod 24-. Each of said cam members 27 is provided with a cumming surface adapted to engage the outer swinging extremity of the corresponding pivoted roller retainer 21. It will be understood without detailed explanation that when a downward force is exerted upon the swinging extreniities of the roller retainers 2121. said retainers will operate as levers of the first order to communicate a lifting force to the corresponding door. For the purpose of providing means for communieating a downward force to the extremities of the retainers 2], a lever 28 is provided pivoted to the bracket 22 at a convenient point and provided with an abutment portion 29 adapted to engage the upper surface of the cam member 27 at the lower left-hand cornetof the corresponding door. Inasmuch as the two cam members 27-27 associated with each door are rigidly. connected together by means of the rotatable rod 24, it will be clear that movement of the lever 28 serves to lift the corresponding door uniformly. Each of the retainers 21-21 is provided with a lip por' tion 30 adapted to ride within a corresponding recess 31. By reason of the engagement of the lip portion 30 within the recess 31, the retainer 21 is constrained to move in parallel relationship with the corresponding door. It will be observed that the lever 28 has a path of movement parallel to the door, whereby an operator may conveniently exert a force to lift the door and to slide said door, said i'orce being exerted in a single movement.
The details of the means for lifting the door structure form no part of the present invention, but have been described above more or less briefly for the purpose of illustrating one type of structure which may be used for the purpose of lifting the door, inasmuch as the present invention contemplates a lifting movement of the door in the performance of its functions.
As stated hereinabove, the angle member 13 associated with the auxiliary door 12 is preferably rigidly secured to said door. Accordingly, when said door is moved vertically, a similar vertical movement is communicated to the member 13. Said member 13, as referred to above, has rigidly secured thereto at its two extremities certain castings or forgings, or other sturdy members, which have been indicated by the numeral 32. The two members 32-32 at the top and bottom of they door member 13 are identical in size and shape, and have the advantage that the matter of stocking said parts for construction and repair purposes is simplified. Said members 32-22 may be termed latches, latching men'ibers or latching portions of the angle member.
Each of said members 32 con'lprlses a. flat base portion 3;} "from oneside of which extends the base wall 34 and the two side walls 35-35. The two members 32 at the two extremities of the angle member 13 have their corrcspoiuling parts projecting in opposite directions, and accordingly the member 32 secured at the top of the post will have one side wall 35 secured to a flange of the door jamb 13 and the member 32 at the lower extremity of the post 13 will have the other side wall 35 secured to the same flange of the jamb 18. Projecting in parallel relationship with each other from the base wall 33 are the two gripping walls 3636, which in the embodiment illustrated are provided with strengthening ribs 3737. Said walls 3636 are provided with shoulders 38-38, which project toward each other from the walls 36-36. Said shoulders are adapted to have overhang ing relationship with members rigid with the side plate 17 and the side sill 14 in a manner which will be referred to presently. Each of the shoulders 38-38 is provided with an abutment portion 39 projecting toward the base wall 33. The base wall 33 is provided with a shouldered abutment portion 40 dis:-- posed symmetrically with respect to one axis of said base wall and projecting in the same direction as the walls 36'-36.
amazes The upper member 32, when the corresponding door 12 is in closed osition, is adapted to cooperate with an a utment or detent member 41, which may be riveted or otherwise secured to the side plate 17. Said abutment or detent member 41 has a downwardly extending neck portion 42 having the two laterally extending walls or shoulders 4343 adapted, when the corresponding door is in closed position, to underlie the shoulders 38-38 of the gripping walls 36-36. Said laterally extending walls or shoulders 43 are provided with recesses 44 adapted to receive the downwardly extending projcctions 39 39 upon the shoulders 38-38 of the upper member 32.
The lower member 32, disposed at the bot tom of the door jamb or post 13, is adapted to cooperate with an abutment or detent member 45 the contour of which will be clear from an inspection of Figures 3 and 4. It will be noted that the member 45 is a hollow casting, forging or the like, having the upwardly extending neck portion 46 having the laterally extending walls or shoulders 47-47 adapted to overlie the shoulders 38-38 of the gripping walls 3636 of the lower member 32. Said neck portion 46 is preferably hollow, whereby to provide an aperture A. The upper portion of the aperture A is adapted to receive the downwardly extending abutment portion 40. Inasmuch as Figures 3 and 4 show the door jainb in raised position, the abutment portion 40 is shown out of engage-- meat with the recess A. It will be understood. of course, that when the door jamb 13 is lowered. the abutment portion 40 will seat itself within the recess A. The member 45 is provided with the bottom wall 48 adapted to be riveted or otherwise secured to the side sill of the car. However, said bottom wall 48 leaves an aperture 49 in the lower portion of the member 45. whereby water, snow and the like which might find its way into the top of the recess A will gravitate through the aperture 49. Inasmuch as the aperture 49 is disposed outwardly of the side sill of the car. such water, snow or the like will pass out harmlessly without danger of interfering with the operation of the mechanism, or of finding its way into the car.
The upper abutment or detent member 41 and the lower abutment or detent member 45 are provided with vertically disposed flanges 41a and 45a respectively, which flanges are disposed transversely of the ear and are adapted to be abntted by the members 32-32 attached to the jamb 13, whereby to limit longitudinal movement of the door 12 and to locate the home position of sa d door. Said flanges 41a and 45a are adapted to be abutted by the members 32-32 even when the jamb 13 is in its elevated position.
It will be noted that the abutment portions 3939 and 40 of the upper and lower memare adapted to cooperate with the corre-' spondingly slanting walls 5151 of the later ally extending walls 4343 of the member 41 which is secured to the side plate 17 of the car. Moreover, the abutment portion 40 is provided with the slanting surface 52 adapted to cooperate with a corresponding slanting surface 53 on the top of the abutment member 45 which is secured to the side sill 14 of the car. Due to the cooperating slanting surfaces referred to, there will be a wedging eiiect between the members 32-32 and the 00- operating members 41 and 45 if, when the jamb 13 is being moved to closed or home position, the operator should not have the jamb 13 at a sufiiciently high level.
The mode of operation of the above described cmbodiment of the present invention will be clear without detailed explanation. Though the members 32-32 and the abutment or detent members 41 and 45 with which they cooperate have been illustrated as being disposed upon the post or jamb of the auxiliary door of an automobile car, it-
will be clear that the present invention is of sufiiciently broad scope to cover a construction in which said members 32 and the members 41 and 45, or equivalent structures, are disposed upon other structure forming part of or connected to a sliding door, whether said door he in a car or in any other type of structure.
So long as the door which carries the members 32-32 or equivalent structure is in its closed position longitudinally ofits line of opening and closing movement, the door will be securely latched in closed position when said door is allowed to descend, as for example when the operator ceases to press downwardly upon the lever 28. Vhen it is desired to move the door to open position, the door will be slightly raised as for example in the illustrated construction by operating the lever 28), which will lift the members 32-32 out of latching relationship with the cooperating members 41 and 45, which are rigid with the car body, whereby the door may be readily moved along its own plane to the position desired.
The present invention involves only a relatively few parts, which are not liable to get out of order and which may be manufactured and assembled at a minimum of cost.
Though a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover all such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In combination, a sliding door havin a downwardly presented surface, means delining a doorway for said door, said means including relatively stationary parts above and below said sliding door, one of said relabers carried by said relatively stationaryparts, said abutment members being disposed above and below said latching members and cooperating therewith to lock the door when said door is in closed position.
In coi'nbination, a sliding door having a downwardly presented surface, means deiining a doorway for said door, said means including relatively stationary parts above and below said sliding door, one of said relative ly stationary parts comprising a track adapted to frictionaily receive said downwardly presented surface of said sliding door, means for lifting and moving said door with said downwardly presented surface out of engagemen t with said track, latching members rigid with said door and abutment members carried by said relatively stationary parts, said abutment members being disposed above and below said latching members and cooperating therewith to lock the door when said door is in closed position, said abutment members having shouldered portions having overlapping relationship with corresponding shouldered portions of said latching members.
3. In combination, a sliding door having a downwardly presented surface, means defining a doorvmy for said door, said means including relatively stationary parts above and below said sliding door, one of said relatively stationary parts comprising a track adapted to frictionally "receive said downwardly presented surface of said sliding door, means for lifting and moving said door with said downwardly presented surface out of engagement with said track, latching members rigid with said door and abutment members carried by said relatively stationary parts, said abutment members being disposed above and below said latching members and cooperating therewith to lock the door when said door is in closed position, said abutment members having shouldered portions having overlapping relationship with corresponding shouldered portions of said latching members, said latching members being identical in size and shape, whereby to be interchangeable at the top and bottom of said door.
4. In a railway house car, in combination, a side sill, a side plate, a sliding door, means for lifting said door vertically, latching members dis osed in vertical alignment at the top and bottom of said door, abutment-memhers carried by said side plate and said side sill, said abutment members and said latching members having cooperating overlapping shouldered portions, said shouldered portions having interlocking parts adapted to latch said latching members within said abutment members when said door is in position, said abutment mem r secured to said side sill having an aperture therethrou h extending downwardly from said interloc ing part thereof to the outside of said ear.
5. In a railway house car, in combination, a side sill, a side plate, a slidin door, means for lifting said door vertically, atching members disposed in vertical alignment at the top and bottom of said door, abutment members carried by said side plate and said side sill, said abutment members and said latching members having cooperating overlapping shouldered portions, said shouldered portions having interlocking parts adapted to redetermined y latch said latching members within said abutment members when said door is in predetermined position, said latching members at the top and bottom of said door being identical in size and shape, said abutment member secured to said side sill having an aper ture therethrough extending downwardly from said interlocking part thereof to the outside of said car.
6. In a I'tllh 'ay house car, in combination, a side plate, a side sill, a track, a sliding door supported by said track, means cooperatively associated with said door for communicating a lifting and sliding movement to said door, latching members rigidly carried at the top and bottom of said door in vertical alignment with one another, abutment members secured to said side plate and said side sill, said abutment members and said latching mem bers having cooperating interlocking portions adapted to interengage at the top and bottom of said door when said door is in lowered closed position, said abutment member secured to said side sill having an aperture therethrough extending from said interlocking portion thereof to the outside of said car.
7. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, a side plate, a side sill, said door jamb being capable of vertical movement relative to said side sill and side plate, latching members rigidly secured at the top and bottom of said jamb, said top latching member having horizontal shoulder portions, a member secured to said side plate and having horizontal shoulder portions, said shoulder portions adapted to clear when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to interlock when said jamb is in home position, and a member secured to said sill adapted to interlock with said bottom latch- Eng member in the home position of said iamb and to clear said bottom latching memoer in the elevated position of said jamb.

In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, a side plate, a side sill, said door jainb being capable of vertical movement relative to said side sill and side plate, latching members rigidly secured at the top and bottom of said jamb, said latching members being identical in size and shape and having slngaildered portions, abutment members secured to said side sill and side plate and having shouldered portions adapted to clear the shouldered portions of said latching members when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to interlock with said shouldered portions of said latching members when said jamb is in home position, the lowermost of said abutment members being provided with an aperture from the top to the bottom thereof to permit escape of foreign matter from the interlocking abutment portions thereof.
9. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a vertical angle member secured to one of said doors, a side plate, a side sill, said angle member being capable of vertical movement relative to said side sill and side plate, latching members rigidly secured at the top and bottom of said angle member, said latching members being identical in size and shape and having shouldered portions, abutment members secured to said side sill and side plate and having shouldered portions adapted to clear the shouldered portions of said latching members when said angle member is in elevated position and adapted to interlock with said shouldered portions of said latching members when said angle member is in home position.
10. In combination, a sliding door, latch ing members at the top and bottom thereof, said latching members being identical in size and shape and each comprising at one end thereof a pair of parallel gripping walls having inwardly turned shoulders at adjacent extremities thereof, an abutment member between said gripping walls, the other end of each of said latching members having two symmetrically disposed Walls adapted to be selectively secured to a relatively flat vertical surface.
11. In a house car, in combination, a side plate, a side sill, a track, a sliding door, latching members secured to said door, said latching members being identical in size and shape, each comprising at one end thereof parallel gripping walls having inturned shoulders at adjacent extremities thereof and each having an abutment portion disposed between said gripping walls, abutment members carried by said side sill and said side plate, said abutment members each comprising a neck portion having shoulders at an extremity thereof, said shoulders upon said latching members being in vertical overlapping relationship with the shoulders upon said abutment members when said door is in closed position, means for lifting said door vertically, said shoulders of said latching members and said abutment members being adapted to clear when said door is in elevated position, the shoulders in the upper latching member having portions interlocking with the abutment member secured to said side plate when said door is in lowered position, the abutment portion of the lower latching member being positioned within a recess in the abutment member secured to said side sill when said door is in lowered position.
12. In a house car, in combination, a side plate, a side sill, a track, a sliding door, latching members secured to said door, said latching members being identical in size and shape, each comprising at one end thereof parallel gripping walls having inturned shoulders at adjacent extremities thereof and each having an abutment portion dsposed between said gripping walls, abutment members carried by said side sill and said side plate said abutment members each comprising a neck portion having shoulders at an extremity thereof, said shoulders upon said latching members being in vertical overlapping relationship with the shoulders upon said abutment members when said door is in closed position, means for lilting said door vertically, said shoulders of said latching members and said abutment members being adapted to clear when said door is in elevated position, the shoulders in the upper latching member having portions interlocking with the abutment member socured to said side plate when said dooris in lowered position, the abutment portion of the lower latching member being positioned within a recess in the abutment member secured to said side s ll when said door is in lowered position, said last mentioned abutment member being provided with a vertical aperture for discharging foreign matter from said recess outwardly of said side sill.
13. In a house car, in combination, a stationary track, a sliding main door, a sliding auxiliary door, said track being adapted to frictionally receive said doors, a door jamb including'an angle member secured to said auxiliary door, said door jamb said auxiliary door and said main door being capable of vertical movement relative to said track, detent members secured to said house car above and below said jamb, said jamb having latching portions, said detent members and said latching portions having cooperating shouldered portions adapted to clear one another when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to abut one another in the direction of sliding movement of said jamb and its corresponding door when said jamb is in home position, and means securing said doors together in the home position of said jamb.
14. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, said door jamb comprising an angular member having one portion extending in a plane substantially parallel to sa d doors and another portion positioned substantiall at right angles to said doors, said jamb eing capable of vertical niovcment relative to the remainder of said car, latching members having portions corresponding to said portions of said angular member rigidly secured thereto at the top and bottom of said jamb, said latch ng nicmhers having shouldered portions, detent members secured to car and having shouldered portions adapted to clear the shouldered portions of said latching members when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to interlock with said shouldered portions of said latching members when sa d jamb is in home position.
15. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, said door jamb and its corresponding door being capable of vertical movement relative to the remainder of said house car, said jamb hav'ng latching members rigid with the top and bottom thereof having shouldered portions, abutment members secured to said car at the top and bottom thereof and having shouldered portions adapted to clear the shouldered portions of said latching members when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to interlock with sa d shouldered portions of said latching members when said jamb is in home position, said latching members bcing identical in size and shape.
16. In a house car, in combination, a stationary track, a sliding door, said track adapted to frictionally receive said door, a door jamb secured to an edge of said door, said door and its jamb being capable of vertical movement relative to said track, dctcnt members adapted to cooperate with said jamb at the top and bottom thereof, said detent members and said jamb having cooperating shouldered portions adapted to prevent sliding movement of said door when said door is in its lowermost position, said shouldered portions being adapted to clear when said door is in elevated position, and means for elevating said door.
17. In a house car, in combination, a sliding door, a jamb secured thereto, sa'd car and said jamb having cooperating shouldered portions adapted to have abutting relationship with one another when said door is in its lowermost position to prevent sliding movement of said door and adapted to clear each other when said door is elevated, and means operable 111 a single movement for elevating said door and sliding same longitudinally of said car.
18. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to the inside of one of said doors, said door jamb and its corresponding door being capable of vertical movement relative to the remainder of said house car, said jamb havin latching members rigid with the top an bottom thereof having shouldered portions, abutment members secured to said car interiorly thereof at the top and bottom thereof.

19. In a house car, in combination, a slidable door, a door jamh comprising an an lar member and latching members secured t ereto at the top and bottom thereof secured to said door, said door jamb and said door bein capable of vertical movement relative to the remainder of said car, said latching members having shouldered portions, members secured to said car and having flanges adapted to be engaged by said janib in its elevated position to limit the closing movement of said door, said members secured to said car having shouldered portions adapted to cooperate with the shouldered portions of said latching members to lock said door in its closed posi tion, said latching members and members secured to said car being adapted to be released in the elevating movement of said door and to be engaged in the lowering move ment of said door when said door is in closed position.

In a house car, in combination, a door, a door jamh secured to said door, said door jamb and door being capable of vertical n'ioven'ient relative to the remainder of said car, said car and said jamb having cooperating shouldered abutment members disposed at the top and bottom of said said cooperating abutment members being adapted to be released in the elevating movement of said door and to be engaged in the lowering movement of said door when said door is in closed position, said abutment members upon said our and said jamb having portions adapted to abut in the movement of said jamb longitudinally of said can when said jamb is in raised position.

In a house car, in combination, a sliding door for said car, a jamb connected to said door, said jamb being adapted to have substantially vertical movement relative to the car, latching means provided onsaid car and said jamb, said latching means having cooperating portions adapted for interlocking engagement in one vertical position of said jamb and for disengagement in another vertical position of said jamb, said latching jamb,
means upon said car and said jamb having cooperating portions adapted to abut during th sliding movement of said door when said jamb is in raised position. V

In a house car, in combination, a sliding door for said car, said door being adapted to have substantially vertical movement relative to the car, a jamb secured to said door and movable therewith, latching means provided on said car and said jamb, said latching means having cooperating portions adapted for interlocking engagement in one vertical position of said door and for disengagement in another vertical position of said door, said latching means upon said car and said jamb having cooperating portions adapted to abut during the sliding movement of said door when said jamb is in raised position.
23. In a house car, in combination, a sliding door, latching means adj acentthe upper and lower edges of said door, a jamb positioned between said latching means, said door being adapted to have substantially vertical movement relative to said car, latching means secured to said car and engageable with said first-mentioned means, engagement and disengagement of said latching means being efifected by the vertical movement of said door, said first mentioned latching means and said last mentioned latching means having cooperating portions adapted to abut in the movement of said amb longitudinally of said car when said door is in elevated position 24. In a house car, in combination, a sliding door, a door jamb secured to an edge thereof, detent members adapted to cooperate with said jamb at the top and bottom thereof, said detent members and said jamb having cooperating shouldered portions adapted to prevent sliding movement of said door when said door is in its lowermost position, said shouldered portions being adapted to clear when said door is in elevated position, and means for elevating said door, said detent members and said jamb having cooperating portions adapted to abut when said door is in raised position to limit the movement of said door toward its home position.
25. In a house car, in combination, a slidable door, a door jamb secured to said door, said door jamb and said door being capable of vertical movement relative to the remainder of said car, latching members disposed at the top and bottom of said jamb, said latching members having shouldered portions, abutment members secured to said car and having shouldered portions adapted to cooperate with the shouldered portions of said latching members, said latching members and abutment members being adapted to be released in the elevating movement of said door and to be engaged in the lowering movement of said door when said dooris in closed position, said latching members and abutment members having cooperating portions adapted to be engaged during the sliding movement of said door in the elevated position of said door whereby to limit the movement of said door toward closed position.

In a house car, in combination, car structure, a. track stationary relative thereto, a main door and an auxiliary door adapted to slide along said track or to restflatwise upon said track, a side plate, a side sill, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, latching members rigidly secured at the top and bottom of said jamb, and abutment members secured to said side plate and said side sill, said latching members having shouldered portions adapted to cooperate with said abutment members to hold said jamb against movement longitudinally of said car when the door to which said jamb is attached is in lowered position, said shouldered portions being adapted to clear said abutment members when said door is in raised position.
27. In a house car, in combination, car structure, a track stationary relative thereto, a main door and an auxiliary door adapted to slide along said track or to rest fiatwise upon said track, a side plate, a side sill, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, latch ing members rigidly secured at the top and bottom of said janib, and abutment members secured to said side plate and said side sill, said latching members having shouldered portions adapted to cooperate with said abutment members to hold said jamb against movement longitudinally of said car when the door to which said jamb is attached is in lowered position, said shouldered portions being adapted to clear said abutment members when said door is in raised position, said abutment members having portions adapted to be abutted by said latching members when said door is in elevated position to limit movement of said jamb longitudinally of said car.
28. In a house car, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, said door jamb bein capable of vertical movement relative to said car, latching members rigidly secured to the top and bottom of said Jamb, said latching interlock with said shouldered dportions of said latching members when sai jamb is in home position.
29. In a house ear, in combination, a main door, an auxiliary door, a door jamb secured to one of said doors, said door jarnb being capable of vertical movement relative to saidcar, latching members rigidly secured to the top and bottom of said jamb, said latching members having shouldered portions, and abutment members stationarily secured relative to said car and having shouldered portions adapted to clear the shouldered portions of said latching members when said 'amb is in elevated position and adapted to interlock with said shouldered ortions of said latching members when sai jamb is in home position, said latchin members and said abutment members having cooperating portions adapted to limit movement of said amb longitudinally of said car when said Jamb is in elevated position.
30. In a house car, in combination, a track stationarily mounted relative to said car, a sliding main door, a sliding auxiliary door, said track being adapted to frictionally receive said doors, a door jamb secured to said auxiliary door, said door jamb, its corresponding auxiliary door and said main door being capable of vertical movement relative to said track, and detent members secured to said car above and below said jamb, said jamb having latching portions, said detent members and said latching portions having shouldered portions adapted to clear one another when said jamb is in elevated position and adapted to abut one another in the direction of sliding movement of said jamb and its auxiliary door when said jamb is in home position.
31. In a house car, in combination, a track stationarily mounted relative to said car, a sliding main door a sliding auxiliary door, said track being adapted to frictionally receive said doors, a door jamb secured to said auxiliary door, said door jamb, its corresponding auxiliary door and said main door being capable of vertical movement relative to said track, and detent members secured to said our above and below said jamb, said jamb having latching portions, said detent members and said latching portions having shouldered portions adapted to clear one another when said amb is in elevated position and adapted to a at one another in the direction of sliding movement of said jamb and its auxiliary door when said jamb is in home position, said detent members and said latching members having portions adapted to abut to limit sliding movement of said auxiliary door when said auxiliary door is in elevated position.
