Description

Ju y 1932- c. H. ROLLASON 1,869,343
' SHEET METAL CONTAINER Filed June 14, 1930 @j/WM HTTURNEfY Patented July 26, 1932 UNITED STATES CHARLES H. ROLLASON, or WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, .essienonf' T0 WHEELING STEEL CORPORATION, OF WHEELIN'G, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORBORATION OF DELA- WARE Application filed June 14,
This invention relates broadly to sheet metal pails, and more particularly to a pail oi the type employed as containers for paints and other liquid and semi-liquid products.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pail for paints and the like having a contracted or reduced neck portion having a terminal roll adapted to have directly interengaged therewith the terminal hooks of the usual carrying bail.
A further object is to provide a pail of the character mentioned wherein the rim roll is formed to constitute a bail attachment, thereby dispensing with the necessity for employing the usual attached forms of bail ears and, consequently, obviating the objections usual to the use of such ears.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, illustrating a pail embodying my invention.
Referring to said drawing, 1 designates generally a pail body formed of sheet metal.
The upper end of said body which, generally considered, is of cylindrical form, is preferably made of reduced diameter, forming a neck 2. The upper edge portion of said neck is turned outwardly and downwardly to form a rim roll 3 of vertically elongated form. The outer portion or wall 4 of said rim roll is vertically disposedand is located at a suitably spaced distance from said neck 2', while the lower, or terminal, edge 5 is turned inwardly and upwardly and occupies abutting bracing relation to said neck, as shown.
Provided in the outer vertical wall 4 of said rim roll at diametrically opposite points are eyes 6 adapted to have projected inward ly therethrough the usual angularly disposed hooks 7 formed on the ends of a bail 8 which affords means whereby the pail may be carried.
It will be observed that the spacing of the SHEET METAL CONTAINER 1930. Serial No. 461,087.
wall 4 relative to the neck 2 is such that room is afforded therebetween for the hooks 7;
also that, due to the noted elongation of the 1. In a container, a rirn'roll f vrtican'y L elongated form having therein diametrically opposite eyes, and a. bail having its opposite ends projected inwardly through said eyes, said ends being angularly disposed to form hooks, said hooks being free to rotate interiorly of said rim roll;
2. In a container, a rim roll or vertically" I elongated form, having its inner and outer walls substantially parallel, the outer. wall of said rim roll being provided with diametrically oppositeeyes, and a bail engaged with said eyes, the ends of said bail being shaped to form hooks which have free rotary movement interiorly of said rim roll.
3. A sheet metal container having its upper end reduced in diameter forming a neck,
said neck having an outwardly turned terminal roll of vertically elongated form, the
outer wall of said roll having therein diametrically opposite eyes, and a bail having hook ends engaged with said eyes.
4. A sheet metal container having its up per end reduced in diameter to form a neck,
said neck beingterminated by a rim roll of vertically elongated form, the outer wall of said rim roll being provided with eyes, and
a bail having hook ends engaged with said eyes. i
5. In a receptacle, a hollow'terminal rim roll having its outer Wall provided with dia metrically opposite eyes, and a bail having terminal hooks directed inwardly through said eyes and movable Within said hollow rim roll, the arrangement being such that the level of fluid in the receptacle may extend above the eyes Without danger of I leakage through the eyes.
6. In an open ended sheet metal container, a terminal rim roll around the open end thereof, said terminal rim roll comprising freely spacedinner and outer Walls providing a bail b hook receiving space therein out of communication with the interior of the receptacleysaid outer wall being provided with bail receiving openings, and a bail extending through said openings and having its ends disposed in the space within said rim roll.
" testimony whereof, I aifix my signature.
-CHARLES H. ROLLASON.
