IMPROVEMENT IN SILT-BASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,913, dated January 30, i877; application led September 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, JACOB WEIDENMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bilt-Basins, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specilcation, reference being had to Y the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view. Fig. 4 is a rear view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a silt basin provided with an overtlow-pipe, which extends and empties into a vertical Waste-pipe connecting with the drain-pipe, the joint-between the overow-pipe and the waste-pipe being made in such a manner that when the basin rises or sinks by the action of the frost on the ground, the Overflow-pipe slides in the Wastepipe, and theconnection between the siltbasin and the drain remains undisturbed. v In the drawing, the letter A designates my silt-basin, which is, by preference, made of cast-iron, but which may be made of clay or any other suitable material, and in any desirable size or shape. This basin is provided with an overflow-pipe. B, which may be cast solid with the same, or which may be attached thereto in any desirable manner. This overiiow-pipe extends down into a vertical waste-pipe, O, which leads into the drain, the Overtloiv-pipe being inserted into the end of the waste-pipe, so that it can slide up and down without breaking the joint.
By this arrangement the siltbasin can be let down in the ground to the required position, and if it is raised by the frost, the overflow-pipe slides in the waste-pipe O, and the connection between the basin and the drain is not disturbed, whereby much labor and expense are saved in the construction of siltbasins, and when one of my basins has been once properly connected with the drain, it requires no further attention.
The bottom D of my silt-basin is made detached from the body of said basin., and it is supported by ilanges a a. From said bottom rises a rod or loop, b, for lifting the same out of the basin Whenever it may be desirable for the purpose ot' cleaning or otherwise.
Silt basins as now in use have to be lowered to a depth ot' at least three feet below the surface, so as to shield them against the inuence of the frost; but on account Ot' this position the operation of cleaning the same is rendered difficult, and in heavy rains they are liable to become choked, so that the water cannot enter, and the walks are hooded.
My silt-basins are set ilush with the surface of the ground, and they can be cleaned thoroughly in a short time, and With comparatively little labor.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
The combination Ot' the silt-basin A, vertical overow-pipe B, and waste-pipe C, the end ot' the overflow-pipe being made to slide within the waste-pipe, and all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of August, 1876.
J. WEIDENMANN. [L. 5.]
