ll atented July lggz UNETEID lflthtil ()HIO, ASSIGNOR. T0 THE APEX ELECTRICAL IRONING MACHINE I Qriginal application filed February 10, 1927, Serial No. 167,314. Divided and. this Serial No. 375,670.
This invention relates to ironing machines and has for its object the provision of a simplified and improved design of machine which can readily be folded when not in use to occupy a smaller floor space; which is free from danger of sudden change from position during operation; which can readily be dismembered into separate parts capable of being delivered and installed by one, man; while to further objects and advantages of the inlitivention will become aparent as the description proceeds. This application is a division of my former application filed February 10, 192?, Serial No. 167 ,314.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this application Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an ironing machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same machine with the frame swinging to vertical position and the bottom of the same being shown; and Fig. 3 is a partial cross sectional view taken through the center of the pivot.
My improved ironing machine comprises a rigid frame 1 on which are carried the shoe indicated generally at 2, the roll indicated generally at 3, the motor 4, and the machanism (housed within the gear box 5) for rotating the roll and for producing and releasing the ironing pressure together with the control devices for such mechanism, here including the buttons 6 and levers 7, 8. The top of the frame 1 is covered with a sheet or tray 9, preferably integral therewith so as to stiffen and strengthen the machine, .though obviously capable of being made separate therefrom.
For the purpose of mounting the frame 1 so that it may be swung either to horizontal position for use or to vertical position for storage and thereby occupy less floor space, I have provided a single pivot located substantially at the center of gravity of said frame and the mechanism carried thereb Accordingly the device is substantially balanced at all times, is free from upsetting, and exhibits no lack of stability even though the pivot be not securely clamped. As such pivot T have shown a screw 10 threaded into a lug 11 extending upwardly from the rear of the application filed. July 3,
frame and furnished with a handle 12 by which it may be tightened. The shank 13 of this screw is journaled in the upper end of the pedestal 14 whose lower end is preferably provided with feet 15 and casters 16. The use of the removable pivot screw, coupled with the balancing of the parts, facilitates the manipulation and delivery of the machine by one man. The movement of the parts to upright position when not in use also facilities the application of a dust jacket or protecting cover. The elimination of balancing springs ,is an important feature.
It will be understood that any suitable or desired mechanism may be employed for rotating the roll for causing the necessary movements of approach and separation be tween the roll and shoe, and that many changes may be made in the parts illustrated so that I limit myself only as recited in my annexed claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In an ironing machine, in combination, a frame, av shoe carried by said frame, a roll carried by said frame, an electric motor and driving connections carried by said frame for operating said machine, a supporting element for said machine separate from said frame and comprising a vertical pedestal and floor-engaging feet carried thereby, and a removable horizontal pivot screw securing said frame to said pedestal, said screw hav ing a lever whereby said frame can be clamped tightly to said pedestal.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOHN W. RAQMJYEFT.
