Divided and this application filed April 12; 1928. Serial No. 269,490. r
This invention relates to certain improvements in web feeding and web oining or pasting mechanisms and is particularly adaptable for use in relation with a printing machine, and this application is'a dlvlslon of my co-pending application Serial No.
687,757, filed January 22, 1924, now Patent No. 1,669,837, dated May15, 1928.
According to the present invention, there is provided a support for supporting a running web roll and a spare web roll with which is associated a web joining or pasting mechanism including a pair of rolls, one of which is movable toward and from the other,
15 the parts being so positioned and arranged that a spare web may be led from a web roll in either the spare or running position and united with a web running from a roll in the other position to the press.
The invention has for its especial object an improved arrangement of the web rolls and the pasting rolls, so that a spare web having paste applied to its loose end may be simply dropped in either position between the pasting rolls and there be united w1th the running web. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide roll driving devices by which the unwinding of the running roll maybe con trolled while the web therefrom is running to the press.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In these drawings,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of the improved web pasting or joining mechanism and enough associated parts for an understanding of the advantages of'the invention, and
Figure 2 is a side view on an enlarged scale of the pasting mechanism shown in Figure 1.
Referring now to these drawings, the invention has been illustrated as used with a multi-couple printing machine employing carrier may be conveniently moved along. the
three active or running webs, in which machine the web pasting or joining mechanism and the roll supports a'reshown as located above theiprintingmechanisms, but it will 1 be understood that the invention is intended for use and maybe used with other'press arrangements. As shown, there is employed a three roll machine, the webs of which are indicated by the numerals1, 2 and 3, these webs supplying printing couples which may be arranged superposed in three decks, the
upper deck only of which is illustrated. Each of these 'decksmay include a pair of er- -fecting couples, each including'form cy inders 4;, 5, impression cylinders 6, 7 and inking mechanism, indicated generally by the numeral 8, for each-form cylinder, these parts being supported in suitableframing 9. The
'webs from'these couples are or may be slit I and assembled over suitable guides 10 at a '70 longitudinal former 11.
' In the construction illustrated there is provided for each printing and perfecting cou- "ple a running web roll and a spare web roll,
the running rolls being indicated by the letter R and the sparerolls'fby the letter S. These rolls are supported in suitable supports 'whichmay vary widely as to character, but in the particular construction. shown the supports are so arranged that the web rolls are, 'loaded'ther'einto from above, As illustrated,
these supports include frames 18 which are formed with bearing portions 16 for the roll.
spindles 17 these frames being supported in any suitable manner, not illustrated The rollsma ybe loaded into these supporting frames from a travelling carrier 25 provided with means for lowering a roll, such as a pulley 27, cable 28 and hooks 29, and this o.
prising a running web roll and a spare Web roll, a pair of guide rolls 94, 95, and located below these guide rolls a pair of pasting or joining rolls. Each pair of these latter rolls .It will be observed that in thebest constructions and as shown, the web rolls are arranged in horizontal allgnment with the guide rolls above the pasting rolls. The end i of a fresh web may have paste applied thereto and be hung over one of the guide rolls, as indicated at 107 atthe two end positionsin Figure l and the right end of Figure 2, or
the web roll, as indicated in the center position in Figure 1 and at the left in Figure 2.
if desired the guiderolls 94, 95 need not be used, and the web simply dropped down from When it is desired to effect a paste, the pasted end of the rollis dropped down between the abutment roll 96 and the roll 97 and the roll 7 97 is brought into contact with the abutment roll, thus squeezing the pasted new -web against the expiring roll after the paste has been made. The expiring web may be separated or severed in any usual manner, as by breaking it with a stick.
-In accordance withthe invention, certain web controlling devices are used for driving the spare roll and for bringing the spare roll up to speed, and these devices will be such that they will be operated so as to operate on the spare roll at the time the paste is made, so that the paste may be made withp out stopping the press. -Whi1e the construction of these driving. and controlling devices may be somewhat varied, as illustrated, 9
they include frictional jfeeding devices which [are driven so as to effect'the unwinding of the roll with the required nicety of tension. 7
In the particular construction illustrated, these feeding devices comprise a pair of'belts 34, 35 arranged preferably, as shown, below the rolls, one set of these belts being used for each web roll. These belts aredriven belts,
- being driven from gearing indicated at 76 from any suitable part of the press.
With the construction described it will be seen that a 'very simple arrangement has been provided for joining or pasting the end .of anew web rollto an expiring web, and
that this can be effected whether the web {lead is from under or over the web roll. While the invention" has been described in its preferred, form, it will be understood that vari- -ous changes may be made in the specific structure and arrangement shown and described without departing from the invention as de fined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a web feeding and pasting mechanism, the combination of a support for a running web rolland a spare web roll, a pair of pasting rolls below the web rolls arranged horizontally, between which a spare web may be led directly either over or under from a web roll in either position, guides over which the end of a spare web may be suspended and located abovethe pasting rolls, vand means for moving one only of the pasting rolls toward theother to join the new web to a web running to the press.
2. In a web feeding and pasting mecha nism, the combination of means for supporting a running Web roll and a spare Web roll in side by side relation,,a pair of pasting rolls located below the web rolls and arranged so that spare web may be led from a web rollin either position, guide rolls located above the pasting rolls and over which the end ofthe spare web maybe suspended in pasting position, and a single means for bringing the pasting rolls into pasting relation to join the new Web running from either position to a web running to the press.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
