My invention relates to improvements in strip finishing machines.
The object of my invention is to provide ,an improvedconstruction of filler receptacle,

Another object of my invention is to provide a filler receptacle of this character having novel means for engaging the upper and lower edges of the strip of flooring and the '5 inner face of the strip at each end of the ,sents the tiller receptacle'which may be of receptacle preventing the filler from escaping .around the discharge opening as the strips of flooring move rapidly past the filler receptacle.
Another object of my invention is to provide a filler receptacle of this character in which meansare provided for any variation in the thickness or'width of the strip so that the means for preventing the filler from escaping around the strip will at all times tightly engage the same, and at the same time providing means for taking up the wear.
A further object of my invention is to provide a filler receptacle of this character in which the several parts can be readily removed and .assembled for'repairs, and .at the same time provide a structure which is more effective in operation and having certain details ofstructure and combination of parts hereinafter more-fully set forth.
A-still further object-of my invention "is to provide oscillating supports with detachable guide strips so arranged that they can be readily removed and new guide strips placed therein when they become worn.

Loosely connected with the outer ends of the arm 32 is a link-34 which extends up wardly and passes through the member 35 which isiotatably support-ed by'the side of the receptacle by means of the trunnions 36 and 37 'to allow the same tooscillate.
' Surrounding thelink 34, above the member 35, is a coil spring 38 which extends up into the 'l1ousing39, and the link 34 within the housing is screw threaded as indicated at 40, and has screwed thereon a nut 41 whereby the tension ofthe spring'38 may be varied for causing the pro-per tension of the fiber strip 29 on the'beveled face 30 of the strip 23. A block 42 is arranged below the provided with alongitudinal recess 46 in which is arranged guide strip 47 adapted to 'engage the beveled face 48 ofthe groove in the lower face of the strip of flooring 23.

Supported by the filler receptacle 1 is a backing plate 56 which is adapted to engage the outer face of the strip of flooring 23 and held against outward movement. This backing plate 56 is of a width approximately that of the strip of flooring 23 so as to have a firm pressure thereon, and the-backing plate has secured thereto a horizontally rectangular bar 59 which is of a length less than the backingplate, and secured by means of bolts 60 and 61 see Fig. 5 are the two end plates 62 and 63. The end plates are each provided with inwardly extending arms ,64 and" 65 which extend over the top of the backing plate as clearly shown in Figure 6 ofthe drawings. The outer edges ofthe, end plates 62 and 63 are provided with the semi-circular grooves 66 and 67.
Inorder to prevent the escape of the filler from the ends of the opening 9 of the filler receptacle 1, I provide the two wooden plates 68 and 69 which extend along the vertical side walls of the filler receptacle and have bifurcated outer ends 70 which are adapted to straddle the backing plate 56 on" the inside of the end plates 63 and 62. The vertical walls 71 and 72 of the wooden'bars 68 and 69 are adapted to engage the inner face 'of the strip of fiooring'23 and prevent the escape of the filler from the ends of the opening 9 of the receptacle 1. The ends'of the bars 68 and 69 are beveled as indicated at 73 and-7 4 to prevent the scratching of the strip of flooring 23 in its rapid'passage through the machine. The, wooden bars 68'and 69 are longitudinally movable in guides 7 5 and 76, arranged in the verticalside walls of the filler receptacle 1. The plates 77 and 78 are attached to the rear wallof the fillerreceptacle 1 by means of bolts 7 9 and said plates are provided with scr'ew'threaded openings 80 and 81 through which pass the thumb bolts 82 and 83'which are adapted to engage the. inner vertical walls 84 and 85 of the'wooden bars 68 and 69 whereby the wooden bars are moved forward in the guides 75*and 76 to cause the proper tension of the same on the inner face of the strip of flooring 23.

The downwardly extendingportions- 94c and .95 ofthe -plates86 and 87 engage the outer face of the block 24' and hold it against outward movement, and the portions 96 and 97 of the members 86 and 87 extend over the upper face of the block 24 and prevent the upward movement in respectto the receptacle. The blocks 98 and 99 are shaped and arranged exactly the same as the blocks 86 and 87 and engage the backing plate 56 and the block 42 inthe same manner, and are held against outward and vertical movement. The blocks 98 and 99 are held in position by the plates'lS and 19 fully described in the first part of this specification.
The filling receptacle is provieed' with openings in its side walls normally closed by plates 68 and 69 so that the agitator 8 can be inspected or to allow the receptacle to be cleaned. The side walls are provided with suitable guideways to receive sheet metal plat-es to close the openings so that the plates 68 and 69 can be removed without allowing the filler in. the receptacle to run out. The guide strips-47 and 48 can be formed of. metal, wood, fiber or any other suitable material and in some instances I have for'medthe strips .47 of steel and strips 47 of fiber, in which case I form the strips 29 of fiber. The strip 47 is provided with grooves 47 at its corners to receive the. pointed edges of the strips of flooring in order to form a tight guiding surface for the lower edge of the strip in its passage by the receptacle. By forming the strip Mrectangular in cross section and providing the grooves in the corners, the strip can be removed and turned so as tobring a new guiding surface into position as the grooves wear out, whereby four guiding surfaces are provided in each strip. 1
In order to limit the oscillation of the cylinder member 44:, I provide the blockl2 with a set screw A adapted to be engaged by a nut, 51 whereby the guiding strips are held in heir proper position to receive the grooved edges of the flooring strip.
In the specification and claims I have used the term semi-liquid to'cover the use of materials suchas filler, paste, wax, glue, emulsion, etc., and I do not wish to limit myself to the application of any particular kind. of material in my apparatus as I am aware that it is capable of applying various kinds of material to a strip in its pass sage therethrough and while I have described a machine particularly adapted for applying a filler to a strip'of fiooring,the machine is capableof applying other materials to various other strips of material.

A semi-liquid applying. receptacle for machines of the character described comprising arecepitacle having a discharge openingin one side thereof, removable support ing blocks carried by the 'side of the receptacle above and below the opening, oscillating guide members arranged within the blocks and extending beyond one face thereof across the upper and lower edges of said opening. A semi-liquid applying receptacle'for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening inone side thereof, removable supporting blocks extending across the outer face of the receptacle above andbelow the discharge opening and having circular openings therethrough intersecting one wall. of the block, and oscillating guide members mounted in said opening and extending across the upper andlower edges of the discharge opening. 1
7 A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a' receptacle having-a discharge opening in one side thereof, supporting blocks extending across the outer face of the receptacle above and below the opening and having openings therethroughintersecting the upper and lower faces of the block, oscillating guide members within said opening and eX- tending inwardly over the upper and lower edges ofthe discharge opening. A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening in one side thereof, removable supporting blocks carried by said receptacle around the opening, oscillating guide members arranged in the upper and lower blocks and extending across the upper and lower edges of the open-' ing, and means for causing the tension on the guide members to causethe oscillation thereof, whereby pressure on the strip being acted upon is obtained.

A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening in one side thereof, oscillating guide members, arranged at the upper and lower ends of the opening, a backing plate between said movable guide members and plates at the ends of said opening and having bifurcated ends straddling the backing plate. i

A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening in one side thereof, movable guide members arranged at the upper and lower ends of said opening, a backing plate between the movable guide members, and horizontally adjustable plates at the ends of the openings andhaving bifurcated ends straddling the backing plate.

A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening in one side thereof, guide members at the upper and lower ends of said openings, a backing plate between the guide members, movable plates at the ends of the openings and having bifurcated ends straddling the backing plate, and members carried by the baiicking plate adapted to guide the movable p ates.

A semi-liquid applying receptacle for machines of the character described comprising a receptacle having a discharge opening in one side thereof, blocks secured to the receptacle at the upper and lower ends of the opening, movable guide members carried by the blocks, a backing plate between the m-ovable guide members, movable plates at the ends of the openings and having bifurcated ends straddling the backing plate, and transverse members adapted to guide the movable plates at the ends of the openings.

cillating members within said blocks and extending over the upper and lower edges of the discharge opening, and plates carried by the ends of the receptacle for engaging the inner face of the strip of material passing over said discharge opening, and having bifurcated ends straddling the strip of material and the backing plate and said backing plate having transverse guides for guiding the plates at the ends of the opening.
16. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge opening, of an oscillating guide member mounted above and below said opening, and a strip guiding member detachl:gbly mounted in each of said guide memers.
17. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge opening, of an oscillating guide member mounted above and below said opening, means for exerting a tension on said oscillating support, and a strip guiding member detachably mounted in each of said ide members. I

The combination with a receptacle having a discharge opening, a block mounted above and below said opening, a removably oscillating member mounted in each of said blocks, a separate tension means for oscillating said members, and a strip guiding member detachably mounted in each of said oscillating members.
