SWINGING PARTITION CEMENT GOMPARTMENT' Application filed November 20, 1929. Serial No. 408,491.
This invention relates to improvements in swinglng partition cement compartments more particularly adapted for use in truck dump bodies.
It is now customary in street and road making to haul the desired proportional amounts of sand and gravel or broken stone in a partitioned truck to the point of use and after dumping the same the desired proportional amount of cement is then mixed with the materials either before or after being loaded into the usual concrete mixing machine This mixing 011 the road is often in the hands of unskilled labor with the result that at times the correct amount'of cement is not used or the cement is not thoroughly mixed with all portions of the sand and gravel.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome this objectionable feature and provide a swinging partition cement compartment in which the cement is carried in compartments formed on the truck partitions and tail gate, and automatically and gradually discharged from said compartments when the truck body'is tilted to unload the sand and gravel therefrom.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a swinging partition cement compartment in which the discharge openings of the compartments are automatically closed and held in closed position when the truck dump body is moved to horizontal or load holding position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swinging partition cement compartment in which the cement may be placed inthe compartments either before or after the truck body has been'loaded with sand and gravel. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a swinging partition cement compartment which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is'well adapted for the purpose described. 1 V
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved swinging partition cement compartment and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims. and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which indicates a the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a truck dump body provided with the improved swinging partition cement compartments;
Fig. 2 is a top view thereof;
'Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View thereof, taken on line 33 of- Fig.2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional detail view taken on line Hof- Fig. 2'; and
Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of the cement compartment used on" the tail gate ,of the truck body. H
Referring to the drawings the numeral 8 e5 truck dump body having opposite side portions 9, a bottom portion. 10 and a fixed front end portion 11. The respective side portions 9 are preferably formed with outwardly projecting upper horizontal flanges '12. which form supports for bearing members 13 and 13 mounted thereon. The bearing members 13 have journaled therein transversely extending rods 14 formed With H medial cranked portions 15. Partition members 16-pi'votally supported from the rods 15 by means of bearings 17 depend downwardly therefrom to the bottom portion of the body to separate said body into compartments 18, 19 and 20; Said partitions have lower horizontal flanges 21 through which bolts 22 extend and enter bolt openings 23 formed in the bottom 10 to 'lock the partitions 16' in vertical position. Bearings24 mounted on the partitions are provided for the upper portions of the bolts, and the upper ends of said bolts are pivotally connected to the cranked portions 15 of the transverse rods 14 by 'movingthe bolts 22 upwardly to open position.
The rear open end of the body is closed by an outwardly swingable partition member or tail gate 27 which is pivotally connected to the bearings 13"by bolts 28 and swings outwardly to open position the dis auxiliary compartment.
may be locked in closed position in any manner desired.
An auxiliary compartment or chamber 29 open at its upper and lower portions is formed on the rear side portion of one of the partitions 16 and is adapted to hold cement to be mixed with the sand or gravel from the main compartments. portion of the compartment extends at an upward angle from the partition. A hinged cover 30 closes the upper or inlet opening of the auxiliary compartment and a hinged door or grate 21 closes the lower or discharge opening 32 of said auxiliary compartment 29. The hinge 33 of said lower door 31 is along the forward wall of said compartment so that when the body is in a tilted or dumping position and the partition is unlocked the said partition will swing rearwardly away from the bottom portion 10 of the body and at the same time the lower door or grate 31 will swing downwardly to open position -to permit the cement to be gradually discharged into the discharging sand or gravel and thus be mixed therewith. v
To close the lower door when the truck body is in horizontal position the said door is provided with downwardly extending closing strap members 34 which engage the truck bottom 10 and closes the discharge door 31 when the partition is swung to closed position. hen in closed position the straps 34 rest upon the truck bottom 10 and hold the door '31 in closed position.
The inner side of the partition member or tail gate 27 is also provided with an open ended auxiliary compartment or chamber 35 for holding cement to be mixed with the sand or gravel discharged from the main compartment 20 into which the auxiliary compart ment 35 extends. A hinged cover 36 closes the upper or inlet opening of the compart ment 35, and a hinged door or gate 37 closes the lower or discharge opening 38 of said As this compartment is mounted on the forward side of the tail gate and said gate swings rearwardly the hinge 39 of the door 37 is along the forward wall of the compartment 35 so that when the charge door 37 will swing downwardly to open position to permit the cement in the compartment to be gradually discharged into .the sand or gravel discharging from the main compartment 20 and be mixed therewith.
' The discharge door 37 is also provided with downwardly extending closing strap members 40 which engage the truck bottom 10 and close the door 37 when the tail gate 27 is in closed position. 7 v V I The auxiliary compartments or cement chambers are positioned above the truck bot- The lower longitudinal grooves in the stream of material passing beneath said door during tiltfrom the main compartments when the partitions are in open position.
In discharging material from the main compartments, the discharge door straps will agitate and form grooves in the flowing material into which the cement will drop and thereby better mix the cement with the materials. The top openings and covers permit the auxiliary compartments to be filled either before or after the main compartments have been filled.
In use the rear main compartment and its auxillary compartment are first discharged and then thenext in order or one compartment can be discharged for one job and the next for another job as desired.
While only two auxiliary compartments are shown in connection with a three compartment body, it is to be understood that any number of auxiliary compartments may be used as desired;
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the swinging partition cement compartment is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination, a rearwardly tiltable dump body having opposite side walls and a bottom portion, a swingable partition transversely positioned within the dump body to divide the same into separate compartments, an auxiliary compartment carried by said partition and having its lower open end spaced from the bottom of the dump body, a door for said open end having a front hinge and being inclined rearwardly and upwardly end spaced from'the bottom of the dump a door for said open end having a 11 body, front hinge and being inclined rearwardly and upwardly relative to said hinge when closed,a plurality of depending members carried by said door and formed to produce ing of said body, and means for. holding said swingable wall in fixed position relative to said dump body.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JULIUS I HEIL.
