lMPROVE MENT IN PIANO-STOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,766, dated January 30, 1877; application filed December 30, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. RAMSEYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Piano- Stool, of which the following is a specification The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of my improved pianostool.

This invention relates to an improved piano stool, that is supported on a center post or pillarin a firm and steady manner without shaking, and capable of being taken apart or knocked down for storage and shipment.

The improvement consists of a piano-stool with a hollow post or pillar strengthened by an interior metallic tube or lining that is attached byascrew-nut to a socket of the base. The center screw-post of the seat is threaded at the lower part, and of cylindrical shape at the upper part, to be simultaneously screwed intoa nut of the tube, and guided by the same.

Referring to the drawing, A represents the base part of the stool, made with four feet, and a center socket of the usual construction, to which the hollow center post or pillar B is tightly secured by means of a tubular strengthening sleeve or lining, D, of suitable metal and thickness, which tube is attached to the upper end of post B, and extended to such distance below the lower end of the same that it passes through the socket of base A, and may be secured to the same by the fastening-nut a. The seat (J is adjusted into higher or lower position by means of a strong screw-post, D, attached rigidly to the center of the seat, and provided with a screw-thread at about the lower half of its length. The upper part of the screw post is perfectly smooth, and is fitted accurately into the sleeve D, which is provided at about the same length part of screw post D with a nut, E, that is either cast into the sleeve, or produced many other suitable manner therein. The arrangement of the nut at this depth produces the screwing up or down of the threaded lower part of the screw-post D simultaneously with the sliding or guiding of the upper part or piston into the upper smooth part of the sleeve D, so as to avoid thereby the annoying shaking of the seat so common in all center-post piano-stools, and substitute therefor a perfectly solid and rigid connection of the seat, post, and standard.

By unscrewing the screw-post and detaching the lower screw-nut, the parts of the stool may be conveniently separated and packed into compact space for shipment, which forms an additional advantage of this stool.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improvement in piano-stools, the combination of the strengthening sleeve or lining D of the center post or pillar B of the stool, said sleeve having a screw-nut, E, at suitable depth below its upper end,'with the center screw post D of the seat, having a threaded lower part and a smooth upper guide part or piston, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the hollow center post or pillar of a piano-stool with an interior strengthening sleeve or lining extending below the post and through the base to form the connection therewith, substantially as specified.
