Description
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
FRANK W. MIX, OF TERBYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE LOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Iietters Patent No. 186,746, dated January 30, 1877; application filed December 30, 1876.
To Aall whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK W. MIX, of Terryville, in the Acounty of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention will be fully understood froml the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a front elevation of a trunk-fastener which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with the cap-plate removed to better show the interior mechanism 5 and Fig. 3 is a like view with the catch-bolt fastened back.
A designates the case, and B the upper portion to which the catch C is attached. I prefer to make these parts of cast metal, and they may be of any pleasing design. The catch is the same as those in common use for various purposes. D designates the catchbolt, which is of knee form, the upper arm a, forming the catch-portion and the lower and horizontal arm b extending through one edge of the case A to form the operating-handle. Back of the catch-bolt D is a spring, c, which bears upon the upper end of the upper arm a, and crowds said bolt forward. Upon the low- -er edge of the horizontal arm b is a shoulder,
far enough to disengage it from the catch C, the shoulder d is brought upon the inside of the case A, when the spring c, by bearing up.-
on the upper end of the upper arm a, tilts the outer end of the horizontal arm downward, so as to engage the shoulder d with the edge of the case A and hold the catch-bolt back, as shown in Fig. 3. By lifting the outer end of the arm b the shoulder d is released-and the spring throws the catch-bolt back to its former position.
When the catch C is forced into the case A the inclined portions ofthe catch C and catchbolt D strike each other and the latter is thrown back, so as to allow the catch to enter the case, after which the spring throws the catch-bolt forward, so as to lock the fastener, as shown in Fig. 2. The fastening is released by depressing the outer end of the arm b, as'
before described.
This device 1s cheaply made, is substantial, and conveniently operated.
I claim as my invention- In a trunk-fastener the shoulder', d, formed on the lower edge of the compound sliding and rocking bolt D a b, in combination with the case A and spring c, all operating together substantially as described, and for the pur- FRANK W. MIX.
'pose set forth.
