Description

Patented July 12, 1932 UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE ammonia ronnn'or onrcaeo, rumors, .assrelvon T JOHN R. rnomrson 06.10
- CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .A CORPORATION or wusr VIRGINIA TABLE Application filed February 28, 1930. Serial No. 432,003.
This invention relates to a table or a device providing a supporting surface and in its present form it is embodied in a dining table. It has for one object to provide a table in which a table top is mounted on a single supporting assembly and inv which the top is so formed as to give the impression of being more than one table. Thus in one form of the invention the table top is so formed as to appear to be in fact not a single table top but the tops of two tables which have been pushed together.
It has been found in restaurants that it is difiicult to persuade customers to sit at a table which is already occupied. Therefore, much space is wasted where single customers 00- cupy a table which has a capacity of more than one person.
An object of the invention is, therefore, to from a table top in such manner as to give the impression of more than one table. Then if a party large enough to fill the entire table is seated, they are seated as though at a single large table. If, however, one person were to be seated first at such a table, another person could be later seated at the same table and because of the shape of the table top the effect is as though the customers were seated not at a single table but at two or, more tables. made separately but placed close to oragainst each other.
Other objects will appear from time to time in the specification and claims.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a table;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end view; 7
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of table top;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a further modification made on a smaller scale;
Fig. 6 is a modified form generally similar to Fig. 2, with some modifications;
Fig. 7 is a further modification;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal cross section taken on line 88 of Figure 7;
it is provided withfour indentations F F, two
I Like parts are designated by like characters throughout the specification and drawings.
A Aindicate table legs. A A are stiffening and supporting frame members. B is a table top. In the form shown in Fig. .2 the top is generally rectangular in shape and is provided on two of its sides with indentations B B The table. is further provided with a border B -which extends preferably entirely about the table andwhich is joined by a central portion B3 which may be of greater width than the border.
C C are portions of the table top which in some manner are madeto appear distinct from the border. This might be done by making: the border and the portions C C of different colors or byfother treatment of the table top, for example, the borders might be smooth andthe portions C. might be rough.
The entire table top might be. patterned with one pattern for the border and another for theparts C. For the purposes of the invention it is immaterial how the surface is divide the top in eifect into two table tops. Thus the top is formed'or treated or colored I so as to give the impression. that it is two table tops. 7 V v p r In Fig.4 a modification appears in which a 7 border is providedabout'the entire table anda cross'member D extends transversely across the table and it may or may not be wider than the border D. Two other portions D D? extend longitudinally of the table and are preferably joined to the border DandtheportionD Portions E E, preferably four, arerpro vided on the table top and they are separated from each other by the portions D and D Thus this table top gives the effect of being four smalltables pushed together. and
on its sides and two on its ends.
In Fig. 5 the modified formappears which is generally the same as that shown in Fig.2 except that it gives the impression of three tables. There are threeportions G G, a border Gr and two transversely arranged portions G G The table is provided along each of the its longer sides with two identations H H.
In Fig. 6 there is illustrated a modified form somewhat similar to Fig. 2, but the surface treatment is different. I is the table top audit is provided with two indentations I I on its longer sides. ment is given to the top of the table, the indentations I I serving to give the impres- The surface may be the" sion of two tables.
same throughout. t
In Fig. 7v a table top J is shown which is provided in its top witha transversely extending depression J There are no'indentations on the sides or the ends and there is no particular surface treatment bey ondth e formation of the depressed band J The form shown in Fig. 7 might have the indentations such as those I I of Fig. 6 added to it and the forms shown in Figs. 6 and 7 might further have the particular surface treatment of borders and central spaces such as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 added. For some purposes, however, they may remain as shown in the drawings and the impression of two tables is adequatelyconveyed by the use either of the indentations alone or the depressed band alone.
No particular treat-' signed; at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, this 21st day of February,
1930. I Y I JERROLD LOEBL;
In the form shown in Fig. 9, two table portions K K are provided. They are in effect rounded tables and are joined by anarrowed strip or band K 7 i It will be realized that while I have shown and described a practical working embodiment of my invention, nevertheless many changes mlght be made in the size, shape,
number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. In
particularly any combination of the various surface treatments shown might be used. While the invention is shown and described as being a tabletop and particularly a dining table top,it is not limited tosuchause and the upper portions of other articles of furniture may be so formed and it is within the contemplation of my invention to make the upper portions of many different articles of furniture in this manner, where for any reason it is desirable to do so. I, wish, therefore, that my description'and drawings be taken as in a broad sense diagrammatic and not as limiting me to the specific forms shown.
I claim: v I
1. As a new article of manufacture, a table tophaving its uppersurface formed into a plurality of generally plane areas, there being a portion separating such areas, said portion being on a plane different from. that of thesaid areas. I 1
2. As a new article of manufacture, a table top having its upper surface formed into a plurality of areas differing in appearance
