IMPROVEMENT lN INDEXES FOR BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,633, dated January 23, 1877; application filed October 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we. ALLEN J. SNIDER and DAVID C. \VOLF, of Keota, in the county of Keokuk, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank-Books; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a new method of numbering the leaves of a blank-book, such as ledgers, day-books, or other books used for bookkeeping; and it consists in providing the leaves, around their edges, with projecting index-strips, upon which the numbers of the leaves are affixed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention ap1.)ertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a front view of a ledger embodying our invention, the front part of the cover being thrown open.
A represents the cover of the book. B are the front leaves, provided with the usual letter-index atthe outer edges. 0 are the leaves of the main part of the book. These leaves are provided with projecting index-strips D D, upon which the numbers of the leaves are printed or otherwise affixed. These strips with numbers extend in succession from the inner top corner to the outer top corner, down the outer edge, and inward to the inner lower corner.
If the number of leaves of the book require it, two or more series of index-strips, D, may be used, as shown in the drawing.
By this method of numbering the leaves any leaf can easily be tnrned to without the trouble experienced with the ordinary method of numbering, where the numbers are on the corners of the leaves and bid by the top leaves. With our invention all the numbers are in sight, and no trouble in turning over leaves to find the right one.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is-
A blank-book, provided with the usual alphabetical index-strips, and the remaining leaves of the book provided each with a projecting strip having the number of the page on the said projection, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
