My invention relates to dispensing systems and has particular reference to dispensing systems for gasoline and other inflammable or explosive liquids.
The general object of my invention is to provide a system of novel character for disu pensing gasoline and other inammable liq- V provide a novel system for dispensing uids which may be operated with mam'mum safet and which may be installed for use at relatively small cost.

More specifically it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel system for dispensing liquids, which includes a valve for controlling the supply of Water to the gasoline tank, for expelling the gasoline therefrom, an emergency or safety control valve in the discharge pipe or conduit which leads from tile said storage tank, and .a selfclosing valve in the discharge nozzle of the said d1scharge conduit, the last named valve being provided with and connected to mechanism for controlling the energizing ci electromagnets vvhich are adapted to open the other or the said valves, it being necessary to maintain the said discharge valve in open position in order that the other of said valves also may be retained in open position.

ln the said drawing the numeral l design nates a storage tank or receptacle for containing the liquid which it is desired to disace pense, vsu'ch as gasoline. VThe said tank is narily is placed 'below the surface ofthe ground. The gasoline or other liquid may be expelled from the tank in any-manner well known in the art, but I prefer. to introduce water under pressure into the said tank from a, suitable source. For this purpose the conduit 3 is connected to the city water supV ly and leads to a float tank 4'the said conciiiit terminating within the tank in a valve controlled by a float, the said float and valve being of known construction. As will be understood, the float and the said valve operate to maintain a substantially constant level in the tank. An outlet conduit 5 which is connected 'at the 'bottom of the tank 4 extends downwardly and -is connected to the bottom of the storage tank, as shown. WVhen the valve 6 which is mounted in the said conduit is opened and the valve 7 is properly adjusted water under substantially constant head will be supplied to the bottom of the tank, the gasoline being elevated by the said water and forced upwardly in the tank and eventually expelled therefrom. The valve 6A preferably is operated by means of the electromagnet 6@ and may be of known construction. The valve 7 also 1s of known construction and comprises a 3fway valve which, when adjusted to one position, permits the water to be supplied to the storage tank, as described already, and when adjusted to another position permits the water which may be contained in the said storage tank to flow from the said tank and to waste through the pipe 8. The valve 7 may be controlled by an operating member or handle 9 which extends into convenient position for operating the same.
The storage tank is provided with a vertically extending discharge pipe 10 the upper extremity of which is connected to a horizontally extending portion 11 connected to a T-fitting, as shown. The upper end of the said T-fitting has connected thereto a vertically extending pipe or conduit 12 the up per end of which is curved downwardly to form a siphon breaker, in known manner.l The lower branch of the said T-iitting is connected to a downwardly extending pipe or conduit 13 which extends horizontally, vertically and horizontally, the last named horizontal portion being 'connected Vto the valve 14, the-discharge outlet of which is connected to the pipe 15 which leads to the ow meter 16. -The valve 14 is identical in construction with the valve 6 being actuated by the electromagnet`14a and the meter 16 may be of any construction known in the art. c The 'meter 16 has connected to the outlet side thereof the *conduit- 17 which Aconduit is in turn connected to the T-itting 18. The righthand portion or branch of the said T-litting is connected to a nipple 19 which in turn is Lacasse adapted to be inserted into the till openings which ordinarily are provided in the gasoline storage tanks of motor vehicles. The valve -is connected to the said hose'by means of a nipple 25.
As will be obvious, the valve'23 is adapted to control the flow of liquid through and from the hose, and comprises a valve'hea-d 26 which is retained on its seat 27 by means of a spring 28 which engages one side of the said valve. The valve may be operated to open position by depressing the lever 29 the said lever being adapted to engage the plunger 30 which is connected to the said-valve and which extends through a packing gland formed in the wall of the valve casing. The inner side of the valve is provided with a stem 31 and a central elongated opening is formed therein which opening extends through the said stem, the valve, and a portion of the stem or plunger 30, the said opening being of proper size to receive one end of a Bowden wire 32 which is retainedthereiii by means of a set screw 32a provided in the discharge side `of the valve head. One end of the casing 33 for the said Bowden wire is` extend through the flexible hose or conduit, the iittings which connect the said hose to the T-iitting 18, and through the said T-fitting, as shown in Fig. 2. The spider 35 which is provided on the interior of the lefthand branch of the said 'lV-fitting is adapted to support the end of the Bowden wire casing in which the said wire 'reciprocates, the said casing being secured in an opening formed in the spider by means of a set screw. The adjacent end of the Bowden wire is secured to the `arm 36 rigidly secured to the shaft 37 rotatably mounted in the casing 38, the lsaid casing being mounted on and supported by the said T-itting.
The shaft 37 extends through apacking vgland 39 formed in the wall of the casing shaftv and adapted to be oscillated within the casing14l formed on the casing 38. A bracket 42 which is secured to the inner top side ofthe casing 41 is adapted to support a tubular .receptacle or container 43 which is pivoted to the said bracket by means of a baud or support 44 around the center thereof.v The said band or support has formed thereon a projection 45 which extends 'through the slot of the arm 40, so that movement of the` latter causes corresponding movement or oscillation of the said container.v The container or receptacle is adapted to be partially iilled with an electric current conducting medium, such as mercury, so that when the said container is oscillated clockwise, for example, the mercury will be caused to dow to the lower or righthand end thereof, causing an electric circuit to be completed through the wires 46 and 47 bv contacting with the exposed ends of the said wires which extend into the said container through the end wall thereof. The said wires are of 'exible character and do not interfere with the oscillation or roc-king movement of the said receptacle, only a very slight force being necessary to actuate the said 'receptacle and to complete the circuit through the said wires. rlhe wires 46 and 47 are. connected to the casing 41 through contacts 48 which are insulated from the casing in known manner. The wire 46 is connected to a conductor 49 to which current is conducted from a conductor 50 connected to a suitable source of electric current through the double pole switch 51 when the latter is in closed position. The wire 47 is connected to one end oi a conductor 52 which is connected in series with the coil of the elec- `tromagnet 14a, conductor 53, the coil of the electromagnet 6a, the conductor 54, the other pole or blade of switch 51, and conductor 55, the current being adapted to low through the said wire 47 and each of the said electromagnets, through the blade or contact of the double pole switch to the conductor 55, which' is connected to the negative side of the current source.
The operation of my novel dispensing system is as follows: When it is desired to dispense gasoline or other liquid the same is introduced into the storage tank or receptacle 1 and the discharge nozzle of the hose is inserted in the fill opening ofthe receptacle which it is or may be desired to fill with the said gasoline or other liquid. U on depressing the lever 29 the valve 26 will he depressed whereby a thrust will be imparted to the Bowden wire 32 and the motion of the said valve transmitted thereby `to the arm 40, thereby causing the latter to oscillate the receptacle 43 to complete the electric circuit through the wires46 and 47. `The current thereupon Yflows, from the conductor 50 through switch 51 (which isclosed) conductor 49, wires 46 and 47, conductor 52,L the electromagnets 14a and 6a ofthe valves14 and 6, through the other pole of the switchl 51 to the conductor 55, thence to the negativeside of the current. source.,` .As soon'as the val-ve 26 is moved to open positiomwater, under substantially constant l head,will be`r permitted to'iiow through the conduit 5, the valve 6, and
into the bottom yof the storage tank 1. caus-V ing the gasoline or other liquid which may the conduit 15, meter 16, conduit 17, and
thence through the hose and the discharge nozzle formed thereon.
When the valve 26 is permitted to close, the reverse operation will take place, as will be understood, that is, the flow of current through the electromagnets will be interrupted by the return of the container 43 to normal horizontal position, and the valves 6 and 14 therefore will close. As a result, it will be impossible to effect delivery of liquid from the storage tank 1 until or unless the valve 26 is retained in open position by the attendant or operative, thereby greatly reducing the danger of lire.
Although I have illustrated my'invention as being applied to the type of dispensing system wherein water is employed for expelling the liquid from the storage tank, it
will be understood that the principle of the invention also is applicable to a system wherein a pump driven by an electric motor is employed for pumping the gasoline from a storage tank therefor. For example, the mercury switch may be employed for controlling the low of electric current to the motor for driving the' pump, in which case the electromagnet 6a and the valve 6 controlled thereby are not used.
lt now will be apparent that I have provided a novel system of dispensing liquids of inammable or explosive character, such as gasoline, which is safe and which may be installed economically for use.
It also will be seen that, by providing a vcontrol valve in the discharge nozzle of ythe hose of a dispensing system, the tanks of motor vehicles and the like may be lled to their capacity without the danger of wasting the gasoline or other liquid, thereby increasing the'sale of the saidA gasoline or liquid. By permitting the supply of water or motive fluid to the storage tank, andthe flow ot gasoline or other liquid through the discharge conduits of the system, only when the discharge valve is held in open position by the attendant, a lnovel system is obtained which is safer and Iwhich may be operated more economically'than those which have been devisedheretofore.y
Having lthus describediny invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:` L
`1. In a-'system for dispensing liquids. the confibination of a storage tankl for the liquid to be dispensed, a discharge conduit connected to said, tank. said conduit terminatingfin aflexiblehose having a valve in` the nozzle thereof,"means connected to said valve for7 controllin,gr-'thel flow` of current through 'an electric circuit, and valve means responsive to the flow of current through said circuit for effecting the discharge of liquid from said tank.
2. In a system for dispensing liquids, the combination of a storage tank for the liquid to be dispensed, a discharge conduit connected to said tank said conduit terminating in a nozzle having a valve therein, a valve located in said conduit for controlling the flow of fluid therethrough, means connected to said first named valve for controlling the fiow of current through an electric circuit, and means responsive to the iiow of current through said circuit for eidecting the discharge of liquid from said tank and for actuating the said second named valve.
3. In a system for dispensing iiquids, the
ycombination of a storage tank for the liquid to be dispensed, a-discharge conduit leading from said tank and terminating in fiexible hose, a vaive in the nozzle et said hose for controlling the iow of liquid therethrough, an electric circuit having a switch therein for controlling the flow of current through the said circuit, motion transmitting means connected between said valve and the said switch and extending through said hose, means for effecting the discharge of the liquid from said tank into the said conduit and through the said nozzle, and electromagnetic means responsive to the dow of current through said circuit for controlling the said last named means upon actuation of the said first named valve.
4. In a system for dispensing liquids, the combination of a storage tank or the liquid to be dispensed, a discharge conduit leading from said tank and terminatin in a nozzle, a valve in said nozzle, means or supplying a fluid under pressure for effecting the discharge of the liquid from said tank into and through the said conduit and the said nozzle, a valve in said conduit, an electric circuit having a switch in circuit therewith, means interposed between said first named valve and the said switch whereby movement of the former causes the latter to be opened and closed, andmeans controlled by the flow of current through the said circuit for controlling` said first named means and for opening and closing the said second named valve.
5. In a system for dispensing liquids, the combination of a storage tank for the liquid to be dispensed, a discharge pipe leading from said tank having a lexible conduit connected thereto, said conduit terminating in a nozzle having a valve therein, means for controlling the flow of liquid through said conduit. a valve for controlling the supply of fluid under pressure to said storage tank for controlling the discharge of liquid therefrom, an electric circuit having a switch in circuit therewith for controlling the How of current through the said circuit, motion transmitting means connected to said first named valve and extending through the said exible conduit whereby actuation of the said valve causes the said switch to be actuated, and electroniagnets adapted to be energized by the fiow of current through the said circuit for controlling said first named means and the said second named valve upon movement of the said first named valve to open position.
6. In a system for dispensing liquids, the combination of a storage tank for the liquid to be dispensed, a discharge pipe leading from said tank having a flexible conduit connected thereto, said conduit terminating in a nozzle having a valve therein, a Bowden wire connected to said valve and extending through said flexible conduit, a conduit for supplying water at substantially constant pressure through the bottom of the said storage tank, a valve in said conduit, a valve in said discharge pipe for controlling the flow of liquid therethrough, an electric circuit, a
switch adapted to control the flow of current through said circuit, said Bowden wire being connected to the said switch for actuating the same, and electrcmagnets 1n circuit with said circuit for actuating said second and third named valves, movement of the first named valve to open position causing said electroniagnets to be energized to open the said second and third named valves.
7. In a system for dispensing gasoline, the combination of a storage "tank, a discharge pipe leading from said tank and having a exible hose connected thereto, said hose terminating in a nozzle having a valve therein, a Valve in said conduit for controlling the flow of gasoline therethrough, an electromagnet for actuating said last named valve, a switch for controlling the fiow of current through said electro-magnet, and a Bowden wire interposed between said irst named valve and the said switch and extending through said hose, whereby operation of the said valve causes the said switch to be opened and closed.
8. In a system for dispensing gasoline, a storage tank, a discharge pipe leading therefrom and having a flexible hose connected thereto, which hose terminates in a nozzle having a valve therein, a conduit for supplying water to said storage tank to cause gasoline to be discharged therefrom, a valve for controlling the flow of water through said conduit, an electro-magnet for actuating said valve, a switch for controlling the flow of current through said electro-magnet, and a Bowden wire interposed between said switch and said first named valve and extending through said hose, whereby movements of said first named valve cause said second named valve to be opened and closed.
9. In a system for dispensing liquids, the combination with a source of liquid supply, a discharge conduit connected therewithand terminating in a exible hose having a nozzle Lacasser valve and switch means for controlling an electric circuit of an electric device governed by said circuit for effecting discharge of liquid through the conduit, a flexible Wire carried by the hose and connected to operate the switch means by a thrust movement' of said wire and means at the nozzle end of vthe hose for imparting thrust movements to the wire for actuating the switch means.
o 10. In a system for dispensing liquids, the
combination with a source .of liquid supply,
a discharge conduit connected therewith and terminating in a exible hose having a nozzle valve and switch means for controlling an n@ electric circuit, of an electric device governed by said circuit for effecting discharge of liquid through the conduit, a flexible wire carried by the hose and connected to operate the switch means by a\thrust movement of gogsaid wire and means or'conjointly operating the nozzle valve and thrustin said wire.
11. In a system of dispensing liquids, the combination of a 1i uid conduit terminating in a' iexible hose, aqBowden wire carried by `2i; said hose and comprising a exible casing and a. wire sliding therethrough, operating means carried by the hose for imparting thrust movements to the wire in the casing and liquid dow governing means associated so with the conduit and operable upon thrust movements ofthe wire in the casing.
12. in a system of the character disclosed, the combination of a iiexible hose, a Bowden wire carried by said hose and comprising a 3B exible casing and a Hexible wire therein and one slidable with respect to the other in various exed conditions of the hose and Bow den wire, operating means carried by 'the hose for imparting thrust movements to one of the said members of the Bowden wire and liquid ow governing means associated with the hose and operable upon such thrust movements of said Bowden wire member.
13. En a system of the character disclosed, the combination of a exible hose, a Bowden wire carriedby said hose and comprising a exible casing and a exible wire therein and vone slidable with respect to the other in various VHexed conditions of the hose and Bowden wire, operating means carried by the hose for imparting thrust movements to one of the said members of the Bowden wire and liquid dow governing means associated with the hose and operable upon such thrust movements of said Bowden wire member, said Bowden wire being located within the hose and means associated with opposite end porag tions o the hose for supporting the Bowden wire in freely operating position within the hose,
1e. in a system for dispensing liquids, the combination of a liquid conduit terminating in a emble hose, a iiexible mechanical connection carried by said hose and comprising a thrust transmitting member iexible'with the hose, operatin means carried by the hose for impartin t rust movements to said thrust transmitting memberand liquid iow governing means associated with the conduit and operable upon said thrust movement of the thrust transmitting member.
15.-In a system for dispensing 1iquids,'the combination of a `li uid conduit terminating y ina flexible hose, a exible casing carried by said hose, a thrust transmitting medium guided in and iiexible with said casing, means at the discharge end of said hose for initiating and imparting thrust movements to said thrust transmitting medium in the flexible casing, mechanism actuated by the thrust movements of said medium and liquid flow governing means controlled by said mechanism.
16. In a system for dispensing liquids the combination of a source of liquid lsuppiy, a discharge conduit connected therewith and terminating in 'a iiexible hose having a nozzle valve, a flexible casing carried by said hose,a thrust transmitting medium operating in said flexible casing, liquid flow govern- @i ing means associated with the conduit and op erable upon thrust movem'ents of said thrust transmitting mediuml and means tor conjointly operating the nozzle valve and edecting thrust action of the. thrust transmitting medium.
17. In a system for dispensing liquids, the .combination of a liquid conduit terminating in a flexible hose having a nozzle valve, liquid How governing .imeans associated with the conduit, a flexible wire carried b the hose and connected to operate the liqui dow governing means by a thrust movement of saidwire, means for conj ointly operating the nozzle valve and thrusting said wire and adjustable securing means for the end portion of said thrust wire.
18. In combination with a dexible hose having a spring seated nozzle valve and a handle for thrusting said vnozzle valve open against the force of the closing spring a flexible thrust wire connected with said va Ve and actuated thereby and liquid How governing means associated with the hose and shitted in one direction on the thrust movement oif the wire and in the return direction on the closingof the nozzle valve by the valve closing spring.
19. ln combination with a dexible hose having a spring seated nozzle valve and a 12@ handle for thrusting said nozzle valve open ainst the force of the closin spring a flexible thrust wire connected wit said va ve and actuated thereby and liquid ilow governing means associated with the hose and shifted in one direction on the thrust movement of the wire and in the return direction on the closing of the nozzle valve by the valve closing spring, said thrust wire being located within the hose vand. the valve havinga stem 13o portion, the thrust wire being connected with said stem portion of the valve. 20. In vcombination with a having a spring'seated nozzle valve and a handle for thrusting said nozzle valve open' against the force of the closingspring a flexible thrust wire connected with said va ve and actuated thereby and liquid flow governing means associated with the hose and shifted in one direction on' the trust movement of the wire and 4in the return direction on the closing of the nozzle valve by the valve 'closing spring, said nozzle valve having a stem portion and screw means tor fastening the thrust wire to said stem portion ci the nozzle valve.
21. In a system of the character disclosed, the combinationoii' a liquid conduit terminating in a iiexible hose having a nozzle,- a
flexible power transmission connection guided within the hose, means at thenozzle end of the hose for actuating said flexible power g transmission connection, the vliquid conduit at the lopposite end of the hose having a casing for said fie'xible power transmission coni nection and said flexible power transmission connection'extending into said casing, an
electric switch located outside the casing and means extendin in liquid tight operating `relation from t at portion of the flexible power transmission connectionwithin the casing to the switch without the casing.

- flexible power transmission connection guided within the hose, meansat the nozzle end ot' the hose-for actuating said iexible power transmission connection, the liquid conduitat the opposite end of the hose having a casing for said flexible power transmission oonnection, an electric switch located outside the casing and means extending in liquid tight operating relation from that` portion of the iiexible power transmission connection within the casing to the switch ywithout the casing, said flexible power transmission connection including a flexible casing and a flexible thrust wire operating therein and means for supporting the opposite end-portions of said iiexible casing in the nozzle portion of the hose and in the casing aforesaid of the liquid conduit. l
23. In apparatus of the character disclosed, the combination of a flexible hose having a nozzle and a spring seated valve, handle means on the nozzle ior thrusting the valve open in opposition to the valve closing spring,
