SPRAYING APPARATUS FOR AUTOMOBILES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, WILLIAM J. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spraying Apparatus for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to a device for m spraying a solvent oil, such as kerosene or distillate with air pressure, on such parts of an automobile as are coated with oil, grease, road oil, tar, etc, that these substances may be softened to such an extent that they may be washed off with soap and water.
I prefer, however, to allow said oil to remam on automobile for several minutes before washing off, as e washing may then go be accomplished .wit a lower water ressure and without rubbing which ten s to mar the finish.
This device quickly and conveniently applies this oil coating, and as both the oil and go the mixture of oil and air are at all times under complete control of the operator, the amount of oil used on each automobile is very small.
A further object of the present invention go is the provision of a novel form of control valves, which ermits the operator to manipulate this evice by the movement of a single lever.
Another object is to provide an arrange- -ment whereby the pressure tank is automatically filled from the storage tank and provides the necessary oil for spraying an automobile without attention or efiort on' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete spraying device; and

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a tank which forms a reservoir or receptacle for storing a solvent oil, the lower extremity of which receives the threaded pipe 2, which connects with valve cock 3, upon the opening of which valve the oil flows by gravity through pipe 2, valve 3, and T fitting 4 into pressure tank 5.
The level of oil in this tank is visible 05 through gauge glass, 6, which may be protected from breakage by pressure, by closing of valves 7 and 7.
An air pipe 11 conveys air under pres sure from air storage tank 13 to valve cook 10. This storage tank may be located at any convenient position suitable for installing said tank and air compressor. Upon the opening of valve 10 by lever23, valve 3 is automatically closed by means of connecting bar 12, the closing of which prevents air from entering oil reservoir 1. The air passes through valve 10,through pipe 14 to T fitting 9 where the air divides and passes through pipes 15 and 16. The air so which passes through pipe 16 enters pressure tank 5 through T fitting 4 and increases the oil pressure to that of the air. This permits the oil to flow through valve cock 8, through needle valve 22 to T fitting 17 8| where said oil unites with the air passing through pipe 15, from which the oil and air mixture flows through flexible tubing 18 to spray tip 26 shown in Figure 2. i The proportion of oil to that of air in this mixture is regulated by adjusting needle valve 22. Upon the closing of valve 10 and valve 8, the oil valve 3 is automatically opened permitting oil from reservoir 1 to flow by gravity into pressure tank 5, thus filling tlllS tank for a repetition of operations.
To prevent this tank from overflowing and filling the air conveying pipes, a check valve 21 is provided, which permits air to pass into T fitting 4, but closes when oil has completely filled tank 5.
It will be noted that the valve cock 3 is operated by means of a lever having a air of arms 24 and 25. Arm 24 is operated by a horizontally disposed connecting bar 12 operated by hand lever 23, which is fulcrumed on plug. of valve cock 10. The arm 25 is connected with valve lever 20 by means of a vertically disposed connecting bar 19. This arrangement permits the operation of valve cocks 10, 3, and 8 simultaneously, valves 10 and 8 being open when valve 3 is closed and valve 3 open when valves 10 and 8 are closed. I
From the foregoing description and a.
study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple and eliicient device for spraying an oil on automobiles for dissolving the oil and grease on same.
Having thus described this invention I hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as
it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope oi the following claims.
. I claim:
1. A spraying apparatus comprising a pressure tan a pressure storage tank, a reservoir, a pipe leading from said reservoir to said pressure tank, a valve in said pipe, 'a pipe leading. from said pressure storage tank to said pressure tank, a valve in said second named pipe, a spraying device, a pipe leading from said pressure tank to the spraying device, a valve in' said last named pipe, mechanism for operating said valves simultaneously to close said first named valve and to open said other two valves, a needle valve in said last named pipe between said third valve and the spraying device, and a pipe from said second pipe opening into said third pipe between said needle valve and the spraying device.

A spraying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a pressure tank, a pipe from the reservoir to the pressure tank, a valve in said pipe, a spraying device, a pipe from the pressure tank to the spraying device, a valve 111 said second pipe, a pressure storage tank arpipe from the pressure storage tank opening into said first pipe between said first valve and said pressure tank and opening into said second pipe between said sec-.
ond valve and the spraying device, a valve in said third pipe, and mechanism for operating said three valves simultaneously to open said second two valves and to close said first valve, and vice versa, a check valve in said third pipe between said third valve and said first pipe, and a needle valve in said second pipe between said second valve and the connection of said second pipe with said third pipe.
3. A spraying apparatus comprising a container for liquid, a container or elastic fluid n r p sur s urce o liq i pply, a. passage leading from said source to said liquid container, 21 valve in said pas- .sage, a passage leading from said elastic fluid container and dividing into branches leading to saidliquid container and to a spraying device respectively, a valve controlling the flow of fluid through both of said last-mentioned branches, a passage leading from said liquid container to said spraying device, a valve in said last-mentioned passage, and mechanism for operating said valves simultaneously.

A spraying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a pressure tank, a ipe from the reservoir to the pressure tan a pressure storage tank, a pipe from the pressure storage tank to the ressure tank, a ipe from the pressure tan to a spraying evice and opening into the pipe from the pressure storage tank to the pressure tank, a valve in each of said pipes, and a device for operating said valves simultaneously to open the valve in the pipe from the reservoir to the pressure tankand close said two other valves, and vice versa.

A spraying apparatus comprising a reservoir, 2. pressure tank, a ipe from the reservoir to the pressure taifir, a pressure storage tank, a pipe from the pressure storage tank to the pressure tank, a ipe'from: the pressure tank to a spraying device and opening into the pipe from the pressure storage tank to the pressure-tank, a valve in each of said pi es, a device for operating saidvalves simu taneously to open the valve in the pipe from the reservoir to the sure tank and to close said two other valves and vice versa, and means in said pipe from the pressure storage tank to the pressure tank preventing the liquid in the pressure tank from passing through said pipe to the spraying device.
