On a part of the supporting structure, as the frame, is means movable forwardly and backwardly to alternately drawloff the ma- 7 terial from the supply 3 and release the same.
This consists here of a lever 5 fulcrumed between its ends and having on onearm 5a a guide 6 for the material. This guide acts, crosswise of the material, to bend the same to effect the drawing-ofi action, and it may advantageously coact to this end with another guide or guides, as 6, which are here affixed to the frame. The terms forwardly and backwardly are here used to define the active (or drawing off) and return (or release) movement of the means 5, respec-' tively. p 7 I The core 4 is held against backward movement byapawl 7. It is driven forwardly, to wind the material thereon, by a member which is here rotative forwardly and backwardly concentrically therewith, as by being Journaled on its trunnion 4a, and here comprising a clutch Shaving a spring-pressed pawl 9 cooperative with the ratchet teeth' lb of the core. Any other reciprocating driver which is active when moving in one (here termed the forward) directionand inactive when moving in the other (here termed the backward) direction to rotate the core in the direction for winding the material thereon will serve instead of. the clutch and is within the scope of this invention.
Means, connecting the driver and the drawing-off means (here lever 5), synchronizes the forward and backward movements of the former with the backward and forward movements of the latter, thus: Moving with (here forming part of) the driver is a M wheel 10 and connecting this wheel and the arm 56 of the lever 5 is a flexible connection as a chain 11, such chain extending from the lever to the wheel and'around the same, more or less, in the direction of its backwar rotation and secured thereto.
Thus it will be seen that when the system comprising the driver 8, parts 10l1, and means 5 is moved back and forth each movement thereof in one direction results in a drawing-off of the material by means 5 while the core remains at standstill and each movement thereof in the other direction results in release of the material by the means 5 and winding up thereof on the core. Thus for the material moving transversely of the same and thus tensioningit for its whole extent-from the supply to the corea'nd'also moving back and forth in synchrony with the driver the core on performing each wind- N ing motion finds themateria'l in a state ofioo latter, respectively.

Of course as the apparatus has been so far groove has engaged therewith a lever 14 which is connected with the driver 8 by a link 15. The cam groove has a portion 12a which suddenly approaches and av portion 12?) which gradually recedes from the center of the cam, wherefore when portion 12a encounters the lever the latter suddenly rises to effect active movement of the driver, with corresponding"sudden release move ment of means 5, and when portion 12?) encounters the lever the latter slowly falls, so that in the idle or backward mot-ion of the driver the means 5 slowly acts to .draw off the material from the supply. Any other means for moving the system comprising the driver, parts 10 -11 and means 5 alternately fast and slow in the way indicated may of course be resorted to Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is: V
1. In combination, supporting structure, a rotary supply of wound material therein, a rotary core in said structure on which to wind the material, means between the supply and core movablev forwardly and backwardly to respectively draw the material from the supply and release the same, a forwardly and backwardly movable driver for the'core active when moving forwardly and inactive when moving backwardly to rotate the core in the direction for winding the-material thereon, and means, connecting the 'driver and first means, to synchronize the forward and backward movements of the former with the backward and forward movements of the 2. 3. In combination, supporting structure, a rotary supply of wound material therein, a rotary core in said structure on which to wind the material, means between the supply and core movable forwardly and backwardly to respectively draw the material from the supply and release the same, a forwardly and backwardly movable driver for the core active'when moving forwardly and inactive when moving backwardly to rotate the core in the direction for winding the material thereon, means, connecting the driver and first means, to-synchronize the forward and backward movements of the former with the backward and forward movements of the latter, respectively, and means to drive the system including the first means, driver and second means at a faster rate when the driver is moving forward than when it is moving backward. y.
4. In combination, supporting structure, a rotary supply of wound material therein, a rotary core in said structure on which to wind the material, means between the supply and core movable forwardly and backwardly to respectively draw the material fromthe supply and release the same, a forwardly and backwardly .revoluble driver for the core active when .moving forwardly and inactive when moving backwardly to rotate the core in the direction for winding the material therein, and means to transmit a backward movement to the first means on each forward movement of the driver including a flexible connection attached to and extending around the periphery of the driverin the direction of its backward movement.
5. In combination, supporting structure,.a rotary supply of wound material therein, a rotary core in said structure on which to wind the material, a lever engaged by the material and movable forwardly and backwardly to respectively draw the material from the supply and release the same, a forwardly'and backwardly movable driver for the core active when moving forwardly and inactive when moving backwardly to rotate the core in the direction for winding the material thereon, and means, connecting the driver and lever, to synchronizethe forward and backward movements of the former with the backward and forward movements of the latter, respectively.
