. SCHNEIDER, 0F BINGEAMTON, NEW YORK BBOTECTIVE GARMENT Application filed m 10, 1930. Serial No. 467,001.
My invention relates to a protective garment and has for its primary object the provision of 'a garment adapted to cover and protect the feet and lower leg extremities 0 persons seated in outdoor arenas or stadiums such as when attending football games and the like.
As is well known to attenders of outdoor athletic contests, such as football games, the weather often makes the attendance uncomfortable because of the exposure of the feet and lower leg portions to wind and/or rain to which they are exposed. Blankets, robes, etc. have been heretofore used as a protection against this discomfort, and often with bad efiects, but these have not served the purpose adequately because of the bulk and weight which must be carried around, and because of the ease with which they can be blown open or aside.
I have provided a simple, cheap and convenient garment for this purpose which affords adequate and comfortable protection against the elements, and which may be folded up and carried in ones pocket, if desired, or which because of the small expense thereof, may be used during the time desired and then thrown away.
My invention consists essentially in the provision of a pair of ordinary paper ba secured together side by side, and of su cient size to receive the feet and lower leg portions of the person whereby to protect them against the weather.
A further object of my invention lies in the provision of a novel folding arrangement for the front portions of the bags whereby to afford display'of appropriate insignia, such as school letters, etc., and which further'provide means, whereb the open upper portions of the bags may e drawn substantially closed about the legs of the wearer.
Another object of my invention lies in the simplicity of the garment, and the economy of construction thereof which permits use of the same for one occasion, and'the throwing away or discarding the same.
Other objects and advantages in details of construction and operation will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference: now
f like being had to the figures of the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, and wherein like reference numerals indicate parts.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved garment in open ready for use position.
Figure 2 is a front view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective: view of the garment partially folded. I
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the same completely folded for carrying.
Figure 5 is a pictorial illustration of the use of the invention.
My invention consists essentially in the provision of two bags or sacks, 1 and 2, secured together side by side, at 3 as by gluing, sewing or the like. The bags may be of any suitable material but are preferably of heavy paper'and of standard design and construction except for the modifications hereinafter described.
As is well known, paper bags of this character are creased front and rear as at i and are so creased angularly on their bottoms as at 5 that they may be folded perfectly flat, and when opened are provided with rectangular shaped bottoms 6. This construction is of well known design and needs no detailed description thereof, the same being clearly illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
At a point beginning on the front edges of I the bags Land 2, as at 7, I provide creases or folds in the sides of the ba s running from the point 7 rearwardly an upwardly as at 8, to the upper open ends of the bags. This provides a triangular shaped flap 9 on the front of each bag, which may be folded outwardly as shown clearly in Figure 5 and on which flaps may be provided insignia 10, or other suitable identifying data. A staple 7a, or other reinforcing member is preferably placed on the bags at the points 7 in order to define the ends of the flaps and reinforce them against wear or tear due to the folding or creasing to a point.
At a point near the upper front edge of each bag, asat 11, I attach a string 12 by means of which the flaps 9 may be held back in display position, and also by means of which strings, the upper ed es of the bags 1 and 2 can be tied closely a out the legs of the wearer, the strings 12 being long enough to permit completely encircling the bags and legs for tying in front, as shown at 13 in Figure 5.
I have thus provided a simple and inexpensive garment for the protection of the feet and lower leg portions of a person and which is rendered artistic and attractive, and in addition readily adaptable for close fitting engagement around the legs, by the simple expedient of folds or creases advantageously 15 disposed and provided with tie means for securing them in position.
Of course, changes may be made in details of construction and arrangement oi parts without departing from the spirit and scope 29 of my invention. I do not limit myself, therefore, to the exact structure herein shown and described, other than by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A protective garment comprising a pair of bagsof foldable material secured together at their sides, and creases in the "front portions of the bags extending angularly across the upper portions thereof whereby said 00 front portions may be folded back to form flaps, and tie means secured to the flaps for holding said flaps in displayposition.
2. A protective garment comprising a pair of aper bags secured together at their sides, and creases in the upper front portions of the bags formin flaps, and tie means secured to said flaps w ereby the open upper ends of the bags may be secured around the legs of the wearer and said flaps secured in display 40 position. I
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
