WEB ROLL SUPPORTING DEVICE FOR TRIPLEX WEB PRESSES Original application filed August 4, 1923, Serial No. 655,776, renewed April 4, 1929, and in Canada May 15, 1928, now Patent No. 1,757,157, dated May 6, 1930. Divided and. this application filed August 14,
1929, Serial No. 385,728.
This is a division of my application for a patent on a triplex web press, Serial No. 655,776 filed Aug. 4, 1923, renewed April 4, 1929, Patent No. 1,757,157, May 6, 1930.
This invention relates to a web renewing device for three webs parallel with each other.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide simple and efficient means for supplying three webs to the press, and also to provide practical means for mounting three web rolls in such close relationship to each other that they can supply the three webs to the press as near together at their edges as they can be handled in the press.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of one end of the malchine showing the three web supply r0 s;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same on enlarged scale; and
Fig. 3 is a plan on the same scale as Fig. 2 showing the original and final positions of the web rolls.
The invention, although not necessarily confined thereto, is shown as applied to a.
double press having two complete sets of web-perfecting couples comprising plate cylinders 10 and impression cylinders 11. The usual form rolls 16 are shown for applying the ink to the plates. The webs W are led through the printing part of the machine in the usual way, being taken from three web rolls 18 at each end in this case. The three webs from either end are fed inwardly toward the center through the printing couples.
In order to supply three webs to a single printing couple and not make the printing cylinders unduly long, difliculty is encountered owing to the fact that of course the supports for the web rolls involve certain solid parts which take up an appreciable amount of room at each end of each web roll. If three web rolls were mounted end to end on their ordinary supports there would be a wide space between the edges of the webs.
It would be poor economy to do this and edges of the webs as much as possible, and
therefore, reduce the width of the press and the length of the printing cylinders and other rolls and cylinders of the press to a minimum, I provide means shown for supporting the three web rolls 18 at each end of the press. The middle web roll is mounted as usual, on a pair of standards 41 having bearings for its'shaft. The shaft is provided with a pulley 42 by which it may be turned to get it up to web speed. These standards are provided with projections 43 having a gradually upwardly curved supporting surface or track thereon. This permits of rolling the web roll in on the floor from the rear, and engaging the ends of its shaft with these 1 surfaces while the roll rests on the floor.
Then the shaft is rolled up these inclined cam surfaces into the open-topped bearings taking the roll with it. 7
I also provide arms 44 on these standards projecting upwardly and having bearings for a pair ofrods 45 to support a web guide roll 46. Springs 47 are employed to hold theroll 46 up so that the web W can be guided up away from the surface of the roll and kept taut.
This mechanism, as stated, occupies so much space sideways that I do not wish to put all three rolls in axial alignment and lose the space occupied by the supporting mechanism. In order to avoid this I bring up the in alignment nearer the press than the cen tral web roll 18. On these tracks I locate a pair of carriages 51 having rollers 52 resting on the tracks. Each of these carriages is provided with a standard 53 having an open bearing like the standard 41 and provided 9 both of the side rolls are manipulated in the with hinged loading levers 54. These carriages are brought out to the side in registration with the dotted line position of the web roll, which is the actual position of the roll when resting on the floor. Then the levers 54 are turned down as shown in Fig. 2, the
web roll rolled up on the floor until its shaft engages these arms. Then these arms, either by hand or otherwise, are turned upwardly to lift the roll and roll it over into its two bearings in the standards 53.
When the side web roll is mounted on its carriage in this way, the carriage is rolled toward the central roll to the position shown in Fig. 3 and also in Fig. 1. The end of the carriage comes up against pins 48 which serve as stops for limiting its inward position so that it will register with the printing mechanism in the press. It will be obvious that same way, and that they are supported on their carriages while they are being unwound. The three are in staggered relationship.
I have also shown a tension roller 56 mounted on a bracket on the frame of the press for I guiding the web from this web roll.
In this way a simple and convenient means i is provided whereby three web rolls can be located in proper position to. deliver simultaneously to a three web width printing machine without necessitating the making of the printing machine of excessive width.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention and shown only one way of using it, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made in the relative arrangements and construction of the parts, without departingfrom the scope of the invention as expressed in the claim. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited in these respects but what I do claim is The combination with a support for a web roll located in fixed position, a web roll thereon of a pair of rails located parallel with the axes thereof at one side thereof, a carriage mounted on said rails to move thereon toward and from the fixed web roll, a web roll support on said carriage adapted to receive a Web roll from the floor and adapted to be moved on the track up toward the end of the first named web roll, said rails having stops for limiting the motion of the second web roll toward the first so that it will not touch it.
In testimony whereof I'have hereunto affixed my signature.
HENRY A. WISE WOOD.
