JOHNSON, OF HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA MOVABLE HOLDING FOR DOORS AND THE LIE Application filed April 12, 1928. Serial No. 269,475.
The present invention pertains to a movable molding which is acted upon by a closure member such as a door or window for the purpose of sealing the lateral spaces between such member and the sides of its frame.
The principal object of the invention is to prov1de a construction of this character which operates automatically when the closure member is brought into closing position.
The invention has been developed particularl for use in connection with garage doors of t e slidin type, wherein the door may be com rised oghinged sections which roll on a trac although the principle of the invention is applicable also to closure members generally, such as sliding doors of various types and windows.
The invention embodies movable moldings slidably sup orted by the jamb or sides of the frame. hey are positioned and mounted in such la manner as to permit movement towards the door when in closed position, and the latter is provided with suitable means for drawing the moldings when it reaches its `closin position. It is also preferable to provide evices such as springs for retracting the moldings when the closure member is shifted to open position.
The invention is fully disclosed by way of example in the following description and in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of al garage door of the overhead type equipped with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, partly in section;
Fig. 3 is-a detail section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical section, similar to Figure 1, of a modified construction;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig- 'ure 4;
Fig. 6 is a vertical section, similar to Figurels- 1 and 4, of still another modification;
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
In Figures 1 and 2 Vis illustrated a door frame consistin generally of vertical side members or jam s l surmounted by an upper rail 2. Along the sides of the opening, and exteriorly of the frame, is supported a pair of tracks 3 which at their upper ends lead into horizontal branches 4. Between the tracks is mounted a door adapted to cover and uncover the frame and consisting of sections 5 hinged together at 6 and equip ed with suitable rollw ers 7 riding in the trac s. This type of door is known 1n the art and therefore need not be further described.
To the inner faces of the jambs 1 are attached movable vertical moldings 8 having slots 9 which are penetrated b pins 10 extending from the members 1. he outer ends of the pins are equipped with heads 11 which prevent the movable moldings from slippingolf. It will be seen that the slots 9 Aare in- '10 clined downwardly towards the door when Athe latter is in closed position, so that the moldings are capable of movement towards the door. The moldings are however normally retracted from the door b springs 12 Il joining their upper ends to a ar 13 comprised in the frame structure abovethe top rail 2.
The upper and lower edges of the door p carry brackets 14 and 15 respectively adapted U to engage the upper ends of the moldings, and brackets 16 carried by the lower endsk of the moldin s, when the door comes into closed position. t will now be apparent that when the moldings are thus engaged, the weightv ofthe door will exert a downward pressure on them and will cause them to slide, by reason of the inclined slots 9, towards the door until they engage the latter, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3. In this manner the lat,- .i u
eral s aces between the door and the vertical si es of the frame are eii'ectively closed when the door is brought into closing position.
In the modification shown in Figures 1 and 5, a somewhat dierent means is used for drawing the moldings toward the door.
In this case the brackets 14, 15 and 16 are be dispensed with and are replaced by brackets 20 secured to the vertical edges of the door near the center thereof. Each such bracket comprises an arm 21 sloping downwardly and away from the inner face of the door and adapted to pass over a stud 22 projecting inwardly from the adjacent movable molding 8. As the pins are thus engaged while the door comes to closing position, they are drawn towards the door whereby the moldings are likewise drawn towards the door to close against the same.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate another modification wherein the moldings 8 have horizontal slots 30 penetrated by headed pins 31 extending inwardly from the jambs 1. The outwardly facing edges of the moldings are formed with notches 32 adapted to receive downwardly sloping brackets 33 carried by the inner face of the door. These brackets enterthe notches when the door comes to closing position and thereby draw the moldings into engagement with the door so that the lateral spaces are closed as already described in connection with Figures 1 and 3.
Although specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described it will be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. lIn combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame and normally disengageable from said member in the uncovering position of the latter, means carried by said closure member for drawing said moldings towards said member, and
means for retracting said moldings from said member.
2. In combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and kuncover `the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame for oblique movement towards said member and normally disengageable from sai-d member in the uncovering position of the latter, springs connecting the moldings to said frame and adapted to retract the moldings from said member, and means carried by said closure member for drawing said moldings'towards said member.
3. In combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame for oblique movement towards said member and normally disengageable from said member in the uncovering portion of the latter, means carried by said closure member for drawing said moldings toward said member, and means for retracting said moldings from said mem- 4. In combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame for oblique movement towards said member, inclined brackets carried by said closure member and adapted to engage said moldings to draw them towards said member.
5. In combination witha frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movabl mounted at the sides of said frame, said mol ings having oblique slots formed therein and sloping downwardly towards said closure member, supportinfrpins fastened to said frame and passing through said slots, means carried by said closure member for engaging said moldings whereby to draw the latter towards said member, and means for retracting said moldings from said member.
6. In combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame, said moldings having oblique slots formed therein and sloping downwardly towards said closure member, supporting pins fastened to said frame and passing through said slots, means carried by said closure member for engaging said moldings whereby to draw the latter towards said member, and springs connecting said moldings to said frame and adapted to kr)etract said moldings from said closure mem- 7. In combination with a frame and a closure member slidably mounted to cover and uncover the frame, moldings movably mounted at the sides of said frame, said moldings having oblique slots formed therein and slop` ing downwardly towards said closure member, supporting pins fastened to said frame and passing through said slots, and inclined brackets carried by said closure member and adapted to engage said moldings whereby to draw the latter towards said member.
8. In combination with a door frame and tracks, a door slidably mounted in said tracks and adapted to cover and uncover said frame, moldings mounted at the sides of the frame for oblique movement downwardly towards said door, and normally disengageable from said door in the uncovering osition of the latter, means carried by the oor for engaging said moldings whereby to draw said moldings towards the door, and means for retracting said moldings from said door.
9. In combination with a door frame and tracks, a door slidabiy mounted in said tracks and adapted to cover and uncover said frame moldings slidably mounted at the sides o said frame, said moldings having slots supporting pins fixed relatively to the frame and entering said slots, springs acting upwardly on said moldings whereby to draw the iatter away from said door, and brackets carried by said door and adapted to exert down ward pressure on said moldings whereby to draw the latter towards Athe door.
In testmon whereof I ax 4my signature.
