hollow base or frame 4. The head 1 and buck 2 comprise the pressing aws or pressing elements of the machine. The head 1 is mount ed to have successive forward and downward movements into closed position and successive upward and rearward movements to open position and it is here illustrated carried by ayoke lever 5 which is supported by and connected to actuating mechanism to have the compound or resultant predominately forward movement and lesser down ward movement during the closing of the press and the reverse of these movements during the opening of the press.
Although the preferred construction provides for the forward and downward movement as well as the upward and rearward movement to be successive respectively, that is, the forward movement is completed before the downward movement begins and also the upward movement is completed before the rearward movement begins, it is clear that each of these two movements may occur simultaneously. If the movements do occur simultaneously the lastsmall portion of the downward movement should be independent of any forward movement of the head and similarly there should be a first small portion of vertical upward movement of the head independently of any rearward movement upon withdrawal of the head so that the head moves vertically with respect to the buck 2 just before contact therewith at the end of the forward movement and also moves vertically away from the buck until out of contact therewith before the rearward movement begins. This prevents the sliding or wiping contact of the pressing elements or jaws in opening or closing of the press.
The lever 5 is here shown as pivoted at 6 to a forwardly and rearwardly movable carrier which in the illustrated embodiment of my invention is a link 7 pivoted at 8 to the frame or base 4-, this link 7 being normally arranged in a horizontal position and movable forward into an upright position when the press is closed. The lever 5 is guided in its forward and rearward movement and also moved upwardly and downwardly by a swinging pull link 9 pivoted at its upper end at 10 to the lever 5 and at its lower end to an actuating part to be presently described. The links 7 and 9 are arranged in substantial parallelism when the head 1 is in closed position and the link 9 is longer than the link 7. Also, the link 9 is arranged between the link 7 and the head 1, and pivoted to the lever 5 at a point between the pivot 6 for the link 7 and the head 1. Inasmuch as the lever 5 is movable upon two pivoted links each of which controls the movement of the lever through the arcs of two circles whose radii are determined by the length of links 7 and 9, these links may well be termed radius links.
This movement of the lever 5 may be described in a somewhat different manner. The pivot 6 of the lever 5 moves in the arc of a circle determined by the radius link 7 and the pivot 10 of the lever 5 moves in the arc of a circle determined by the radius link 9, so that different portions or parts of the lever 5 move in the arcs of different circles.
It should be noted further that the press lever 5 under the influence of the radius links 7 and 9 is swung through the arcs of two circles and that the centers of'these two circles are remote or outside of the body of the press lever and are also spaced from each other.
As the yoke lever 5 is double, there are two links 7 and two links 9 arranged on opposite sides of the yoke lever and the frame. The pivot 8 of the link 7 is a shaft extending transversely of the rear end of the base 8, the two carrier links being mounted on the shaft to turn therewith. The shaft is pro vided with a rock arm 11 thereon located within the base, the rock arm being formed double. The lower ends of the links 9 are pivoted at 12 to toggle links or rock arms 13 mounted on a shaft 14 j ournalled in the base and extending transversely thereof parallel to the shaft 8, this shaft 14 forming part of the actuating means to be presently described. The lever 5 also swings upon the two links 7 and 9 and the link 9, in being pivoted to the lever 5 intermediate its ends, is an intermediate radius link.
The actuating means in addition to the shaft 14 comprises an actuator movable in the hollow base and having a pair of cams, cam followers coacting with the cams and connections between the cam followers and the shafts 8 and 14, the cams being arranged to come into coaction with the cam followers successively in order to first actuate the swinging carrier link 7 and then the pull link 9 during the closing movement of the press to bring the head substantially vertically down upon the buck.
In the illustrated embodiment of my in vention, the actuator is acarriage 15 movable along parallel ways 16 formed within the base and extending forward and rearward thereof, the carriage on one side being formed with a cam 17 and on its other side with a cam 18, the cams being arranged with their lift portions 19 and 20 out of transverse alinement so that the lift 19 of the cam 17 first coacts with its follower and later the lift 20 of the cam 18 coacts with its companion follower. The cam 17 is also provided with high and low horizontal dwell portions in front and in the rear of its inclined or left face, but the cam 18 is formed with a low dwell portion in front of its lift face. The follower coacting with the cam 18 rests on the lift when the press is closed.
The carriage is provided with suitable rollers 21 movable along the bottom of the vase, and it is actuated by means of a piston 22 movable in a. cylinder 23 carried within the base between the opposite side portions of the carriage. The piston rod thrusts against an intermediate or yoke portion 24 of the carriage or against an anjusting screw 25. Also, the movement of the piston is limited by an adjusting screw 26 carried by the frame in the path of the yoke.

The ends of the hubs 29 and 34: adjacent to each oth r are provided with coacting one-way clutch faces or teeth 36 and 87 so arranged that the hub 29 transfers a portion of its counter-clockwise rotation as viewed from Figure 6 to the hub and hence to the shaft 14, but permits continued counter-clockwise movement of the hub 34L relatively to the hub 29 even though the hub 29 is stopped from further rotation by the head coming down onto the buck or by the swinging carrier link 11 coming in contact with a stop 38, Figures -land 5. The purpose of these clutch teeth 36 and 37 is to rotate the cam follower 28 downwardly in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed from Figure 6 into the path of the lift portion 20 of the cam 18 as the carriage 15 and cam 18 move to the right.
The piston 22 is a single acting one and the flow of motive fluid such as air is controlled therethrough and therefrom in any suitable manner or by any suitable valve mechanism, and in the illustrated embodiment of my invention, a two hand control is shown so that both hands must be employed while the press is closing. This two hand control mecha nism includes push buttons 40 which must be depressed to permit air to enter the cylinder, and a release lever 41 which must be operated to permit the air to exhaust from the cylinder and the press to open. This manual control forms no part of this invention.
The press is opened, when the lever 41 is released, by counter-springs 42 acting on the links 13, these springs being located on opposite sides of the base 4. Each spring is interposed between spring abutments 43, 44, the former being pivoted at 45 to the base and the latter having a stem 46 which is pivoted 47 to the adjacent rock arm 18. The abutments also have portions telescoping within the spring to hold the spring from buckling and displacement.
A suitable casing or shield 48 may be employed to enclose the rear portion of the has or that portion in the rear of the buck 2 and the mechanism on the sides of the base. The base 4 is in the form of a channel open ts ends, the ends being closed by plates 49 and 50 held in position by screws 51 and the parts can be assembled and removed through the rear end by removing the plate 49.
In operation, assuming the press is open and the parts in their position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, upon the deprs ion of the push buttons 40 to permit motive fluid to enter the cylinder 23, the carriage 15 moves forwardly first bringing the lift portion 19 of the cam 17 into engagement with the cam follower 27, thus rotating the hub about the shaft 14 and rocking the arm 30, and through the link 31 and rock arm 11 rocking the shaft 8 in a clockwise direction as viewed from Figures 4 and 5, thus moving the swinging carrier link 7 from its horizontal position upward into upright position until the arm 11 is against the stop 38. This movement of the radius link 7 swings the pivot 6 hence the end of the lever about the arc of a. circle whose radius is the length of the link 7 and the center of which circle is the pivot 8.
The movement of the press lever 5 under the influence of the radius link 7 causes the radius link 9 to swing as well so that the pivot 10 and hence that portion of the lever 5 at the pivot 10 is swung through the are of a circle whose radius is the length of the radius link 9 and the center of which circle is the pivot 12. The lever 5 moves therefore in the arcs of two circles whose radii are of different lengths.
During such movement, the head 1 has bee.- brought forward and slightly downward into a position over the buck 2 and the cam parts are in their position seen in Figure 4. During such movement, the clutch face or tooth 36 has picked up the clutch face 37 and hence rocked the shaft 14 sufficiently to permit the cam lift to engage the follower roller 35. The lever 5 receives its initial downward movement from this rotation of the shaft 14 through the pull link 9.
lyhen the head 1 has been brought into a position over and close to the buck 2, the cam follower 27 or its roller 32 rides up on the flat plane face of the cam 17 and the same time, the lift 20 of t 1e cam 18 engages the i ller of the follower 28 and thus through the hub 34 which is keyed to the shaft 14, rocks the shaft 14 anti-clockwise thus rocking the levers 13 to pull downwardly on the links 9 and clamp the head 1 tightly onto the buck 2, the roller 35 remaining on the lift portion of the cam 18 while final. pressure is being applied. This movement of the levers 15 compresses the springs 42.
It will be seen that the lever 5 carrying the head 1 is controlled in its movement by radius links 7 and 9 which gives the lever 5 a movement through arcs of two circles both of which arcuate movements are transferred to the head 1 since it is mounted upon the lever 5. Upon completion of this movement the head 1 is given a substantially vertical movement by a downward movement of the link 9 which a gives the lever 5 a con'ipound movement consisting of a swinging movement controlled by two radius links and a second downward movement bringing the head 1 into contact with the buck 2. The link 9 has then the double 7" motion of serving as a radius link in swinging the lever 5 and as a toggle link i the rocker arm 13 to obtain downward movement and pressure of the head 1 against the stationary head or buck 2. The sir aging movement is secured by the cam 19 and the downward and pressure movement is obtained by the cam 18 through its associated mechanism both of which movements have been previously described. To open the press, the air is released from the c linder so that the springs are free to react and move the levers 13 clockwise p the links 9 upwardly and hence, opening the press, the men ontum gained by the reac .on of the springs car. ng the head to move rearwardly to wide open position. The force of the springs is applied to cariage 15 to return the carriage to its starting position through the roller acting on the cam 18 in its return rotation in a clockwise direction.
Various changes in the timing and speed of the movements set out herein may be made merely by altering the positions and sha as of t 1e cam faces 18, 19 and 20 and such changes are within the contemplation of this disclosure.
l Vhat I claim is:
1. A pressing machine comprising a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a lever carry ing the movable element, a carrier pivoted to the frame and to the lever and movable from a substantially horizontal position to an upright position during the closing of the press, and means for successively actuating the carrier and moving the lever about the pivot connecting it and the carrier.
2. A pressing machine com prising a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other and the latter being carried by the frame, a lever supporting the movable element, a carrier pivoted at one end to the frame and at its other end to the lever, a link pivoted at one end to said lever and means for successively swinging the carrier on its pivot and applying a pulling force to the link during the closing movement of the press and the reverse of these forces durng the opening movement of the press.
3. In a pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried the frame, a carrier mounted on the frame and-movable upward and forward during the closing of the press and downward and rearward during the opening of the press, a lever carrying the movable element and pivoted to the carrier to move upwardly and downwardly and means for successively actuating the carrier and moving the lever on its pivot.
a. In a. pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a carrier mounted on the frame and movable upward and forward during the closing of the press and downward and rearward during toe opening of the press, a lever carrying the movable element and pivoted to the carrier to move upwardly and downwardly, a link pivoted to the lever to move it on its pivot relatively to the carrier and means for successively actuating the carrier and the link.
5. In a pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a carrier mounted on the frame and movable upward and forward during the closing of the press and downward and rearward during the opening of the press, lever carrying the movable element and pivoted to the carrier to move upwardly and downwardly, a link pivoted to the lever to move it on its pivot relatively to the carrier and means for successively actuating the carrier and the link, the link being connected to the lever between the movable element and the pivot connecting the link and the carrier.
6. In a pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried'by the frame, a carrier pivoted to the frame and normally arranged in horizontal position and movable into upright position, a lever pivoted to the carrier to move up and down on its pivot and carrying the movable element, a pull link connected at one end to the lever intermediate of its ends, means for successively moving the carrier on its pivot and applying a pulling force to the link during the closing of the press and the reverse of these movements during the opening of the press.
7 In a pressing machine, a frame, coop crating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a carrier pivoted to the frame and normally arranged in horizontal position and movable into upright position, a lever pivoted to the carrier to move up and down on its pivot and carrying the movable element, a pull link connected at one end to the lever intermediate of its ends, means for successively moving the carrier on its pivot and applying a pulling force to the link during the closing of the press and the reverse of these movements during the opening of the press, the link and carrier being arranged in substantial parallelism with each other and the link being of greater length between its pivots than the carrier.
8. In a pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being supported by the frame, a lever carrying the movable pressing element at one end, a swinging carrier pivoted to the frame and movable from horizontal to an upright position during the closing of the press, the lever being pivoted to the carrier to move up and down on its pivot, means for moving the carrier about its pivot and means for moving the lever about the pivot connecting it and the carrier during the pivotal movement of the carrier and moving said lever on its pivot relatively to the carrier when the carrier is in upright position.
9. In a pressing machine, a frame, coop crating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being supported by the frame, a lever carrying the movable. pressing element at one end, a swinging carrier pivoted to the frame and movable from horizontal to an upright position during the closing of the press, the lever being pivoted to the carrier to move up and down on its pivot, means for moving the carrier about its pivot and means for moving the lever about the pivot connecting it and the carrier during the pivotal movement of the carrier and moving said lever on its pivot relatively to the carrier, when the carrier is in upright position and means for limiting the movement of the carrier when in upright position.
10. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable element having a compound movement forward and downward into pressing position and upward and rearward out of closed position and mechanism for effecting the compound movement comprising cams and motion transmitting means between the cams and the movable element including followers coacting with the cams and means for actuating the cams to bring them successively into coaction with the cam followers.
11. In pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable element having successive forward and downward movements into closed position and upward and rearward movement out of closed position and means for actuating the movable element comprising cams and followers co acting with the cams, the followers being movable with the portion of the actuating means connected to the movable element and means for actuating the cams to bring them successively into coaction with the followers.
12. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable element being movable about two parallel axes into and out of closed position and actuating means comprising cams and cam followers coacting with the cams and connected to said element and mechanism for actuating the cams to bring them successively into coaction with their followers.
13. In apressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a carrier mounted on the frame and movable upward and forward during the closing of the press and downward and rearward during the opening of the press, a lever carrying the movable element and pivoted to the carrier and mechanism for successively actuating the carrier and moving the lever on its pivot comprising cams and cam followers connected respectively to the carrier and the lever and means for actuating the cams to bring them successively into coaction with their followers.
14. A pressing machine comprising a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being carried by the frame, a lever supporting the movable element, a carrier link pivoted at one end to the frame and at its other end to the lever and being normally arranged in a horizontal position and movable into an upright position, a pull link pivoted at one end to said lever and mechanism for successively swinging the carrier link on its pivot and applying a pulling force to the second link during the closing movement ofthe press and the reverse of these forces during the opening of the press, said mechanism comprising cams and followers coacting with the cams and connected respectively to the carrier link and the pull link and means for actuating the cams to bring them successively into coaction with their followers.
15. A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable element having successive forward and downward movements during the closing of the press and upward and rearward movements during the opening of the press and mechanism for efl'ecting such movements comprising a movable carriage formed with cams, and cam followers carried by the frame and coacting with the cams and connections between the cam followers and the movable element and means for actuating the carriage.
16. A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable element having successive forward and downward movements during the closing of the press and upward and rearward movements during the opening of the press and mechanism for effecting such movements comprising a movable carriage with cams, cam followers carried by the frame and coacting with the cams and connections between the cam followers and the movable element and means for actuating the carriage, the cams being arranged to come into action successively with their cam followers.
17. A pressin machine comprising a hollow base, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being mounted on the base, the movable pressing element having a successive forward and downward movement into closing position and an upward and rearward movement out of closing position, mechanism for actuating the movable element including a carriage movable forwardly and rearwardly in the base and provided with cam faces on opposite sides thereof, cam followers coacting respectively with said cams, connections between the cam followers and the movable element, the cams being arranged to engage their followers successively and means for actuating the carriage.
18. A pressing machine comprising a hollow base,eooperating pressing elements,one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being mounted on the base, the movable pressing element having a successive forward and downward movement into closingposition and upward and rearward movements out of closing position, mechanism for actuating the movable element including a carriage movable forwardly and rearwardly in the base provided with cams on opposite sides thereof, cam followers carried by the base and coactin g respectively with said cams, connections between the cam followers and the movable element, the cams being arranged to engage their followers successively and means for actuating the carriage, the last mentioned means being also located in the base.
19. In a pressing machine, a base, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being mounted on the base, a lever carrying the movable element, a carrier link pivoted at one end to the base and at its other end to the lever and being normally arranged in horizontal. position and movable into upright position during the closing of the press, a pull link pivoted at one end to the lever and extending in parallelism to the first link, a shaft journalled in the base, a rock arm mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith and provided with a cam follower, a link connecting the rock arm and the carrier link to actuate the latter about its axis, a second rock arm mounted on the shaft to rotate about the same and having a cam follower and a link connecting the last mentioned rock arm and the pull link to apply a pulling force thereto, a carriage located within the base and having came for coact-ing with the followers respectively, the cams being arranged to come into action successively with their followers and means for actuating the carriage.
20. In a pressing machine, a. base, cooper; ating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being mounted on the base. a lever carrying the movable element, a carrier link pivoted at one end to the base and at its other end to the lever and being normally arranged in horizontal position and movable into upright position during the closing of the press, a pull link pivoted at one end to the lever and extending in parallelism to the first link, a shaft journalled in the base, a rock arm mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith an d provided with a cam follower, a. link connecting the rock arm and the carrier link to actuate the latter about its axis, a second rock arm mounted on the shaft to rotate about the same and having a cam follower and a link connecting the last mentioned rock arm and the pull link to apply a pulling force thereto, a carrier located within the base and having cams for coacting with the followers, the cams being arranged to come into action successively with their followers and means for actuating the earria said rock arm mounted on the shaft having hubs on the shaft provided with coacting one-way clutch faces arranged to permit the rock arm loosely mounted on the shaft to initially drive the rock arm fixed to the shaft and thereafter permit the rock arm fixed to the shaft to move in advance of the rock arm on the shaft.
21. A pressing machine comprising a hollow base, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the latter being mounted on the base,
the movable element having a compound movement into and out of pressing position, actuating means for effecting such movement comprising a cylinder located in the hollow base and extending forward and rearward centrally thereof, a sliding carriage having portions arranged on opposite sides of the cylinder and an intermediate yoke portion connected to the piston movable in the cylinder, the carriage being formed with cams on opposite sides thereof, cam followers coacting respectively with said cams and located in the base and motion transmitting connections between the cam followers and the movable element, the motion transmitting means extending in the rear of the element mounted on the base.
92. A bench pressing machine comprising a shallow frame adapted to be placed upon a bench, a motor at one end of the frame, control means for the motor at the other end of the frame, pressing jaws mounted upon said frame, one of which is stationary and the other is movable, a swingable press lever upon which the movable press jaw is mounted, radius links to swing the press lever to close and open the press aws, said radius links being above the motor, a second link connected to one of the links forming a toggle to forcibly press the jaws together, and means connecting the motor to the second link to rotate the link.
23. A pressing machine comprising a frame, a stationary pressing element, a movable pressing element cooperating with the stationary element, a press lever at one end of which the movable pressing element is secured, a radius link pivoted to the other end of the lever, an intermediate radius link pivoted to the lever intermediate the ends thereof, means to swing the press lever through the arcs of two circles upon the radius links, a second link pivotally connected directly on the intermediate radius link forming a toggle, and means to rotate the second link to pull the intermediate radius link downward to force the movable pressing element against the stationary pressing element.
24. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws and operating means to open and close the press including a press lever carrying one of the press jaws, means for swinging the press lever simultaneously through the arcs of two circles having spaced centers to bring the jaw carried thereby laterally towards and away from the other aw, said spaced centers being remote from the lever, and means to move the press lever to bring the jaw carried thereby substantially vertically int-o pressing engagement with and away from the other jaw.
25. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws and operating means to open and close the press, including a press lever carrying one of the press jaws, a pivot on the press lever, means for swinging the press lever simultaneously through the arcs of two circles having spaced centers, said spaced centers being remote from the lever, and means for pivoting the press lever upon said pivot on the press lever independently of the spaced centers.
26. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press j aws and operating means to open and close the press, including a press lever carrying one of the press jaws, radius links pivoted to the press lever at spaced points in its length, said radius links being also pivoted on spaced centers remote from the lever, means to swing the lever simulta neously upon the radius links to swing the jaw carried by the lever laterally towards and away from the other jaw, "and means to move the lever to bring the jaw carried thereby substantially vertically into pressing engagement with and away from the other jaw.

A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws and operating means to open and close the press, including a press lever carrying one of the press jaws, a pivot on the press lever, radius links pivoted to the press lever at spaced points thereon, said radius links being also pivoted at spaced centers remote from the press lever, means to swing the press leve 1 simultaneously upon the radius links, and means to swing the press lever upon the pivot on the lever to bring the aw substantially vertically into engagement with and away from the other jaw.
28. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws and operating means to open and close the press, including a press lever carrying one or" the press jaws, a pair of spaced pivots upon the lever, radius links pivoted upon spaced centers remote from the lever and also pivoted to the press lever upon said spaced pivots, means to swing the press lever upon both radius links, and means to swing the press lever upon one of the spaced pivots upon the lever to bring the jaw substantially vertically into engagement with and away from the other jaw.
29. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press aws and operating means to open and close the press, including a press lever carrying one of the press aws, a pair 01" spaced pivots upon the press lever, radius links pivoted upon spaced centers remote from the press lever and pivoted on the spaced pivots on the press lever, means to swing the press lever with both radius links, a toggle link pivoted to one of the radius links, and means to rotate the toggle link to pivot the press lever about one of the spaced pivots thereon.
30. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, a jaw-carrying lever attached to one of the jaws, means to support and swing the aw-carrying lever bodily in a lateral direction from the other jaw to open and close the press including a radius link pivotally connected to the jaw-carrying lever, and means to pull the radius link longitudinally to move the jaw-carrying lever and bring the jaw carried thereby substantially vertically into contact with the other aw.

A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, a jaw-carrying lever attached to one of the jaws, means to support the jaw-carrying lever for movement bodily in a lateral direction from the other jaw to open and close the press including a toggle connected to the press lever, means to swing the press lever laterally in relation to the other jaw upon the toggle, and means to actuate the toggle to move the jaw substantially vertically into engagement with and away from the other jaw to produce jaw compression.
32. A garment or ironing press comprising a frame, coacting press jaws and operating means therefor to open and close the press including a jawcarrying lever attached to one of tie jaws, toggle means including a long upright link to support and swing the j aw-carrying lever and jaw carried thereby bodily in a lateral direction from the other jaw and a short link having one end pivoted on the frame behind the jaws and the other end pivotally connected with the lower end of the long upright link, means to actuate the short link to fold the long upright link down past the short link to produce jaw compression, and link means spaced from the toggle means and pivota ly connected with the frame and lever to guide the latter in its bodily movement.

A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, a horizontally disposed jaw-carrying lever having its front end attached to one of the jaws and its rear end terminated behind the press jaws, upright means to support and swing the aw-carrying lover bodily in a lateral direction from the other jaw to open and close the press including a radius link pivotally connected to the jaw-carrying lever, and means cooperating with the lower end of the radius l nk to draw downwardly on the jaw-carrying lever to produce jaw compression.

A bench press comprising coacting press jaws, a j aw-carrying lever attached to one of the jaws, a table underneath the jaws and jawcarrying lever, means to support and swing the j aw-carrying lever bodily in a lateral direction from the other jaw to open and close the press including a radius link positioned above the table and to the rear of the press jaws and connected to the jawcarrying lever, and means mounted upon the table to move the jaw-carrying lever and bring the jaw carried thereby substantially vertically into contact with the other jaw.
35. A bench press comprising coacting press jaws, a aw-carrying lever attached to one of the jaws, a table underneath the jaws and jaw-carrying lever, means to support and swing the jaw-carrying lever bodily in a lateral direction from the other aw to open and close the press including a toggle positioned above the table and to the rear of the press jaws and connected to the jaw-carrying lever, means to swing the press lever laterally or" the other aw upon the link of the toggle connected to the jaw-carrying lever and means to swing the other link of the toggle to move the jaw substantially vertically into engagement with and away from the other jaw to produce jaw compression.
