My invention relates to improvements in. door locks. It is particularly well adapted for use in connection with automobile door locks.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of novel means, in a door lock having an oscillative handle, for pushing against the door jamb to open the door, when the handle is turned in one direction.
A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for locking the bolt from engagement with the door amb, when the handle is turned to one position.
Still another object of my invention is to to provide novel door opening and bolt locking means, which are simple, strong, durable, efficient and readily applicable to door locks of constructions now in general use.
The novel features of my invention are 1 .0 hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my invention,
Fig. 1 is a section on the plane of the line 11 of Fig. 5, showing my invention as applied to a door lock of usual general construction, a portion of the door and jamb being shown.
Fig. 2' is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the parts in the bolt locking positions.
Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of a portion of the door jamb.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a portion of the door having the lock therein.

Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in. the different views.
1 designates a lock casing of usual general 40 construction mounted on a door 2 associated with a usual jamb 3. 4 designates a bolt slidable in the casing 1 to and from locked engagement with the jamb 3. as shown in Fig. 2, and in solid lines in 1.
5 designates the usual outside handle having a shank 6 extending into the casing 1 and provided with a crank arm 7 adapted to engage the bolt 4 for sliding the bolt to the unlocked position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
8 designates the usual inside handle having a shank 9 extending into the casing 1 in which said shank is os-cillative.
10 designates a spring in the casing 1, fastened at one end to the casing and having its free end bearing against the bolt t with a tension normally tending to force the bolt to the jamb engaging position.
Mounted on and oscillative with a squared inner portion of the shank 9 of the inner han dle 8 is a member 11 adapted, when moved from. an initial normal position, shown in solid lines in 1, to engage the front edge of a projection 12 on the bolt 4 and retract said bolt from locked engagement with the jamb 3.
A spring 13 having one end fastened to the casing 1 has its free end adapted to ride on the periphery of the member 11 and to enter a notch 14 in said periphery, for holding said member 11 in said initial normal position, shown in solid lines in Fig. 1.
For forcing the door 2 open, when the inner handle 8 is turned to retract the bolt 4, there is longitudinally slidably reciprocative in the casing 1 a push rack bar 15. which, when slid outwardly, is adapted to have its outer end travel on a surface 16 in the adjacent edge of the amh 3, said surface inclining outwardly from the door opening. The travel of the push bar 15 on said inclined surface will etlect a pushing effect against the said surface and open the door sufiiciently to enable the door to be easily fully opened from the inside of the car.
For moving the push bar 15 to said pushing position, it is provided with a row of rack teeth 16 meshing with an arcuate row of teeth 17 on the periphery of the member 11, so that when said member 11 is turned clockwise, as
viewed in Fig. 1, the push bar 15, through the intermediacy of the teeth 16 and teeth 17, will be forced outwardly. lVhen the member 11 is turned in the opposite direction, the
a push bar 15 will be retracted.
Means are provided by which when the member 11 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, the push bar 15 will be fully retracted, and the bolt 4; held from being retracted by the outside handle 5. Such means may, as shown, constitute a locking member 18 slidably mounted in holes provided in two projections 19 and 20 with which the casing 1 is provided. The locking member 18 has an arm 21 which, when the member 11 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, is engaged by a projection 22 on the periphery of the member 11 and is forced by said projection 22 into an edge recess 23 in the bolt 4, Fig. 2.
For retracting the locking member 18 from the recess 23, when the handle 8 turns the member 11 to the initial position, shown in solid lines in Fig. 1, a U shaped spring 24 bears at one end against the projection 20, and has its other end fastened in a slot- 25 in the adjacent edge of the locking member 18.
When the inside handle 8 is turned to move the member 11 from the initial position, shown in solid lines in Fig. 1, to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bolt 4 will be unlocked, and the push bar 15 will be forced to engage the inclined surface 16 of the iamb 3, thus opening the door 2.
hen the inside handle is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, the locking member 18 will enter the recess 23 and hold the bolt 4 from inward retraction. and the push bar 15 will be inwardly retracted out of engagement with the jamb.
When the lock is provided with other locking means on the inside of the car, or with outside locking means, as through the outside handle 5, the locking member 18 with its actuating spring 24, andthe projection 19 may be omitted. as shown in Fig. 6.
To hold the member 11 releasably in the bolt locking position. shown in Fig. 2, the pe ripherv of the member 11 is provided with a notch 26 adapted to receive the free end of the spring 13.
I do not limit my invention to thestructure shown and described. as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a door lock, the combination with a lock casing adapted to be mounted on a door associated with a jamb, a bolt on said casing adapted to lockingly engage said jamb. and a handle oscillativ on said casing, of member engaging and oscillative with and by said handle and arranged and adapted. when turned in one direction from an initial position, to engage and retract said bolt from its locking position, a push bar interlocking with said member and movable thereby to and from a position in which it is adapted to push against said jamb and open said door, and means actuated by said member when turned a predetermined distance in the opposite direction for locking said bolt from retraction from said locking position.
2. In a door look, a casing, a bolt movable therein to and from a locking position, a push bar movable in said casing to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage and push against a jamb, a locking member movable in said casing to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage said bolt and hold the bolt from retraction from its locked position, means for normally forcing said locking member from engagement with said bolt, and an oscillatory member having means by which when swung in one direction it will engage and move said bolt to the unlocked position and having means engaging said push bar for reciprocating the latter when said oscillatory member is oscillated and arranged to move said push bar to the pushing position when the oscillatory member retracts said bolt from the locked position, said oscillatory member having means which engages and moves said locking member into locked engagement with said bolt when the oscillatory member is operated to retract said push bar from the jambengaging position.
3. In a door lock, a bolt movable to and from a locking position and having a recess, a locking member movable into and out of said recess for locking the bolt from retraction from the locking position, means for normally forcing said locking member out of said recess, a push bar movable to and from a position in which it is adapted to push against a jamb, and an oscillatory member having toothed engagement with said push bar for moving the latter to and from the pushing position and having means for engaging and retracting said bolt from the looking positionwhen the push bar is moved to the pushing position, said oscillatory member having means for engaging and forcing said locking member into said recess when the oscillatory member is turned in a direction in which it will retract said push bar from the pushing position.
4. In a door lock. a bolt movable to and from a locking position and having a recess, a. locking member slidable into and out of said recess for locking said bolt in its locking position, a rack bar slidable to and from a position in which it is adapted to engage and push against a jamb, an oscillatory member having an arcnate row of teeth meshing with said rack bar for moving said rack bar to and from the pushing position, said oscillatory member having means for engaging said bolt to move the latter from the locking position when the oscillatory member is turned to move said rack bar to the pushing position, said oscillatory member having means for engaging and forcing said locking member into said recess when said oscillatory member is turned to retract said rack bar from the pushing position, and means for normally forcing said locking member out of said recess.
