My invention relates more particularly to electric mining drills of the single post type in which the post is provided with a vertically arranged and vertically adjustable turn table which serves as a connection between the drilling mechanism and the post.
One object of my invention is the provision of simple and efiicient means for attaching and detaching the drilling mechanism from the post and for securely locking the parts against accidental removal, while affording easy removal when desired.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a structure wherein the thrust of the drilling, operation is carried directly in line with the center of the drilling mechanism.
Other objects of my invention will appear and be described'in the specification.

As showing one form of construction embodying my invention though without limiting myself to the details of construction or arrangement of parts shown, and to be herein described, but availing myself of all changes and modifications which maybe made within the scope of the appended claims, I have shown inFig. 1, a mining drill consisting of a main frame 4 which carries a motor 5, the latter being provided with an enclosed starting switch 6, the motor being connected at its driving end to gearing contained within the housing 7 the gearing being adapted to drive and feed the usual thread bar 8, the latter 1923. being provided with any suitable to which the auger 10 is connected.
The parts above described are rotatably mounted upon a turn table 11 carried by the vertically adjustable bracket or chair 12, the latter being mounted upon the post 13, and held in adjusted position thereon by the set screw 14.
The means of attaching the main frame 4 to theturn table 11 forms the principle subject matter of the present invention and by referring to Figsy2 and 3, these parts and their method of operation will now be described.
The main frame is provided with a circular portion 15 which is of about the same diameter as the turn table 11 and this circular portion is provided with an undercut ribbed lug 16 arranged in line with the axis of the thread bar 8 and adjacent the gear box 7. This circular portion 15 is alsoprovided with socket 9 a second undercut ribbed lug 17 arranged approximately one-third of the way around the circumference from the lug 16 and on the upper side of the circular portion 15.
'A lever 18 is pivotally mounted in a recess in the'circular portion 15 adjacent the lug 17, the lever 18 extending across the circular portion and cooperating with a quadrant 20 which springs from the lower part of the circular portion 15 and terminates in the handle portion of the main frame 4, this lever being provided with a pair of undercut rib- bed lugs 21 and 22, the lug 21 cooperating with the under surfaces of the quadrant 20 when viewed from the position of. Fig. 2. while the lug 22 embraces the turn table 11 as do the lugs 16 and 17 when the main frame is attached to the turn table.
The lever 18 carries the rotatable latch handle 23 which is provided with a latch 24 that engages a notch 25 in the quadrant 20 when the lever 18 is in the full line position of Fig. 2. Any suitable spring 26 is mounted between the interior ofthe latch handle 23 and the stem of the lever 18, the spring 26 exerting its pressure to rotate the handle 23 to cause the engagement of the latch 24 with the notch 25 and to maintain this engagement against accidental displacement.
The lug 22 of the lever 18 carries an inclined finger 27 which serves to assist in entering the turn table under the lugs 16 and 17 as well as the lug 22.
The operation of the device is as follows:
Drills of the type here described are usually of such weight that it is diflicult to handle them under the conditions met within a mine and more particularly is this so in the more. recent examples of this type of drill by reason of the requirement for greater power and greater speed in drilling.
My present invention is directed to means for quickly and easily mounting and dismounting the drilling mechanism from the post or supporting structure, and this is accomplished by first setting up the post be-- tween the roof and floor of the mine, and then attaching the drilling mechanism to it. In this connection itis to be remembered that the bracket or chair 12 which carries the turn table 11 is a part of the post section of the drill and remains upon the post at all times.
Having set the post in position, the opera tor moves the lever 18 from the full line position of Fig. 2 to the dotted line position, first rotating the latch handle 23 by hand to disengage the latch 24 from the notch 25, the spring 26' serving as a means to hold the lever 18 in the dotted line position by causing the latch 24 to bear against the surface of the quadrant 20 when the lever is moved to the dotted line position. The operator now places the drilling mechanism slightly about and in line with the turn table 11, the movement of the lever 18 and the lug 22 providing a throat suiiiciently wide to permit the turn table 11 topass between the lugs 22 and 16 and to engage the lug 17, whereupon the lever 18 is moved to the full line position of Fig. 2 in which position the latch 24, actuated by a spring 26-, engages-the notch 25 in the quadrant, and the attachment of the drilling mechanism is complete.
From Fig. 3' it will be seen that any strains placed upon the lug 22 are carried directly to the opposite surface of the quadrant 20 by means of the lug 21 so that the lever 18 is relieved and saved from injury by such strain.
IVhen mounted as above described, the drilling mechanism may be rotated about the turn table so that holes may be drilled at any angle desired. 7
To remove the drilling mechanism. from the post, it is only necessary to rotate the latch handle 23 to unlock it and then move it to the dotted line position of Fig. 2, whereupon the drilling mechanism may be raised out of engagement and then moved to the place where it is next desired to set up the machine, after which the post may be moved to the new position, set up, and the drilling mechanism again attached.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a drill the combination of a post, a turn table for carrying drilling mechanism and carried by the post, a drilling mechanism main frame, an undercut lug carried by the main frame and for co-operating with the turn table to mount the drilling mechanism main frame thereon, a movable undercut. lug forming a co-operating member to complete the mounting of the drilling mechanism main frame, a carrying member for the movable undercut lug and for moving said lug to engaged or disengaged position, means for latching the movable undercut lug in engaged position, and drilling mechanism carried by the main frame.
2. In a drill the combination of a supporting turn table, a main frame for drilling mechanism, drilling mechanism carried thereby, an undercut lug carried by the main frame and in line with the thrust produced by the operation of the drilling mechanism and co-operating with the turn table in mounting the drilling mechanism main frame thereon, a movable undercut lug (to-operating with the turn table and the first mentioned undercut lug to mount the drilling mechanism main frame on the supporting turn table, means for mounting and moving the movable undercut lug, and latching means for holding the movable undercut lug in position to engage the supporting turn table.
3. In a drill the combination of a supporting structure, a main frame, drilling mechanism carried thereby, a turn table forming part of an engagement between the supporting structure and the main frame whereby the main frame may be mounted upon the supporting structure, an undercut lug carried by one of the members and co-operating with the turn table to form part of the engagement between the supporting structure and the main frame, a movable undercut lug co-operating with the first mentioned lug, means for mounting the movable lug on the member which carries the first mentioned lug, and latch mechanism for holding the movable lug in engaged position with the turn table.
4. In a drill the combination of a supporting structure, a main frame, drilling mechanism carried thereby, a turn table forming part of an engagement between the main frame and the supporting structure, an undercut lug carried by a member co-operating with the turn table, a lever carrying two undercut oppositely arranged lugs and carried by the member which co-operates with the turn table, one of the lugs of said lever co-operating with the first mentioned lug to complete the mounting of the main frame on the supporting structure and the other lug of said lever transmitting strains direct- 1y to the member which carries the first mentioned lug.
5. In a drill the combination of a supporting structure, a main frame, drilling mecha nism carried thereby, a turn table and associated parts forming an engagement between the main frame and the supporting structure, a forward and an upper undercut lug carried by one member of the turn table engagement, a lever pivotally mounted adjacent one of the imdercut lugs and carrying a third undercut lug co-operating with the turn table and movable from a position maintaining mounting of the main frame on the turn table engagement to a position permitting dismounting thereof, and a latch cooperating with the lever to hold the latter in position maintaining the mounting of the main frame on the turn table engagement.
6. In a drill the combination of a supporting structure, a main frame for drilling mechanism, a turn table carried by the supporting structure, a pair of undercut lugs carried by the main frame for engaging the turn table, a quadrant carried by the main frame, a lever carried by the main frame and carrying a pair of undercut lugs one of which engages the turn table while the other engages the quadrant carried by the main frame to transmit strains directly from said main frame, and a latch co-operating between the lever and the quadrant for holding the lever in position so its lug engages the turn table.
