This invention relates to apparatus devised to effect circulation of the air in rooms or compartments, such as saloons, smokerooms and the like.
Cabin, desk, and ceiling'fans as heretofore commonly used for the purpose are open to the objection that they deliver air in one direction only, or, if they perform gyratory movements, more or less complicated 1o mechanism is required for effecting the desired movements.
The apparatus according to the invention is a self-contained ductless unit comprising a casing which houses a motor-driven fan and which is provided with a directional air nozzle or nozzles for discharging the air impelled by said fan.
The casing of the apparatus may be constructed as the base of a table lamp of which the lamp bulb may be in series with the motor for driving the fan.
There may be arranged within the casing a heat-exchanger such as an electric heater, or a cooler of suitable type.
Air humdifying means comprising a Water reservoir beneath which is arranged an electric water-heating unit may be provided within the casing.
Several embodiments of apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 being a vertical section showing a table fan embodiment, Fig. 2 a part elevation part vertical section of a second table fan embodiment, Fig. 3 a vertical section of a third table fan embodiment, incorporating a cooler, Fig. 4 an elevation of the embodiment shown in Fig. 0 drawn to a smaller scale, Figs. 5, 6 and 7, a vertical section, a horizontal section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and an elevation drawn to a smaller scale, respectively, of a fourth table fan embodiment incorporating a heater and an air humidifier, and Figs. 8 and 9, a vertical section and a sectional plan on the line 99 of Fig. 8, respectively, of a ceiling fitting.

The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a metallic casing 1, which houses a motordriven fan impeller 2, having an air inlet 3 at the underside of the casing 1 and having a plurality of air outlets distributed around the periphery of the casing 1 and presented by a row of directional air nozzles or louvres 4. i r
The nozzles 4 are individually controllable so that each of the sitters at a table 5 on which'the apparatus rests can adjust the shell 6 fitted within the underside of the casing 1.
The base portion of the casing 1 is cylindrical while the upper part of the casing is conoidal with flatsto take the flanges 7 of sockets 8 for the nozzles 4.
9 denotes the fan' motor which is surmounted by a dome 10. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the easing is composed of panels 1, 1" and forms the base of a table lamp whose standard. is indicated at 11. I
Sockets 8' for the nozzles 4 are fitted to the panels 1".
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 air entering the casing 1 at 12 traverses passages 13 formed between the casing and so an ice box 14 within the casing, before entering the inlet 15 to the fan impeller 2. As will be understood, when the air current is to be cooled, the box 14 is filled with ice. The lower part of the casing 1 is lined with sheet metal 16 to form a watertight drain receptacle for collection of'water condensing'on the exterior walls of the box 14. The fan motor 9 is sustained from the upper portion of the casing 1 which, together with the nozzle housing 1 is detachable from the lower half of the casing 1 to permit access to the ice box 14.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5-7 air entering the air inlet 3 on the underside of 9 the casing 1 traverses an electric heating unit 17 and air humidifying means comprising a water reservoir 18 on the underside of which is arranged an electric water-heating unit 19 housed within a metallic shell 20.
21, 22 denote air spaces within the shell 20 and beneath the heating unit 19, said spaces being separated by an asbestos Washer 23 on each side of which is arranged an asbestos distance piece 24. The water reservoir is traversed by wash plates 25 along the bottom edges-0f which are formed holes 26. The apparatus is equipped with feet 27 adapted to rest on a table top or the like.
The construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9, s
which is a ceiling fitting, includes electric heating elements 28, 28 and resistance elements 29, 29, on the outlet side of the fan impeller 2, which latter is driven by a'pair of coupled motors 9, 9' protected from the heating elements 28, 28 by asbestos faced walls 30. The resistance elements 29, 29' are included in the speed regulating circuit for the motors 9, 9 and also serveas supplementary air-heating means.
What I claim is 1. Air circulating apparatus comprising a casing having an air inlet and presenting on its lateral wall a set of sockets, a motor driven fan housedwithin said casing, and
directional nozzles each constituting an air outlet, said nozzles being mounted for universal movement in said sockets, permitting discharge of air in any desired direction Within the range of a hemisphere. I 2. Aircirculating apparatus according to claim 1 and including heateexchanging means fitted within the casing. V
3. Air circulating apparatus according to claim 1 and including air humidifying means fitted within the casing.
4. Air circulatng apparatus according to claim 1 and includingia water reservoir on the inlet side of the fan and an electric waterheating unit beneath said reservoir.
