l atentetl June 21, 1932 PATENT FFICE CLARENCE P. \VALKEB, 0F DULUTH, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR '10 ARTHUR M. FAY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS HOLDER Application filed December 18, 1929. Serial No. 415,099.
This invention relates to holders and has special reference to one particularly adapted for use in the support of receptacles such as small paint containers, ink bottles, or the like, which are ordinarily subject to accidental upsetting, or spilling.
The principal object is to provide a simple, inexpensive holder of this character.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a practical embodiment of the invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly in section.
The device comprises preferably a circular tray or pan-like main body portion 1, having a flaring upstanding rim 2. .Upon the bottom of the body portion and adjacent one side thereof is mounted an upstanding handle portion 3 which may be welded orotherwise fastened to the bottom of the body portion as at 4, and is of inverted U-shape and riveted or welded as at 5 to the inner side of the rim 2 of the body portion, thus providing a convenient handle for manipulation of the device.
To the innermost upstanding portion of the handle it attached as by riveting or Welding as at 6 the circular flat resilient holding member 7. This holding member or band is provided with two overlapping or scarfed ends, each being cutaway some distance from its free end for such vertical overlapping engagement, and the extreme terminus 8 of each end being bent out radially forming convenient finger catches for the opening of the holding member when inserting or removing an object to be held, as for example a can of paint or the like. The vertical wall formed by the cut-away portion of each terminus of the holding member is cut on an angle or diagonally as shown at 9 so that in the event of holding an extremely small can the two termini will further overlap each other horizontally, reducing the diameter of the holder,
It will furthermore be obvious that the holder member being formed of resilient or spring like material will automatically adjust itself about the receptacle to be held, and i that by bringing the finger catches 8 toward each other will enlarge the diameter of the holder for the convenient insertion or removal of a receptacle as desired. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A holder of the type described comprising a base portion, an upstanding handle portion fixed to said base portion, a circular resilient member fixed to the handle portion, said member being provided with means for manually varying its diameter for the purpose described, said means including a scarfed union of the termini of the circular resilientmember resulting in uniform size and shape of said circular member, the extremities of which are turned upwardly for convenience in adj ustment.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature.
CLARENCE P. WALKER.
