SAFETY RAZOR HEAD AND BLADE Application filed January 9, 1931.

This invention relates to razors and particularly to an improved safety shaving head, the object being to provide an improved construction which is simple, strong and very convenient, and which presents a vcombined blade and holder forming what may be termed a one-piece unit.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shaving head unit wherein there is presented a one-piece unit adapted to be connected and disconnected with a vhandle at any time, while the shaving head unit presents a blade with cutting edges, holding means and a guard structure permanently associated together and, in effect, presenting a one-piece structure. v

A further object of the invention, more specifically, is to provide what may be termed a one-piece unit shaving head consisting of a guard plate, a blade and a supporting o r backing plate rigidly and permanently secured by riveting, welding or other means together and forming a single unit.

An additional object is to provide a unit shaving head which may include only a guard plate and blade arranged to present substantially a single piece structure capable of being connected to a handle and disconnected therefrom at will. v

As the parts; areV all permanently and rigidly secured together it is only necessary to clean the, shaving head unit in hot water after each shaving operation, and the parts will be thoroughly cleaned and ready for use at another time. `When both edges 12 and 13 of blade 7have become dull the complete shaving head unit is removed from the handle and thrown away without danger from cutting and anew complete shaving head unit substituted, whereupon the device is again in condition for use.

In the drawing. no stiifening beads show on the holding plate, but it is evident that thesame ycan be formed on theholding plate inthe same mannerl asillustrated with respect to the guard plate. l, *Y A l Figure-2 shows a desired form of safety razor, but it will 4be evident that many modified.forms showing the same inventive idea might be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. l V l In Figures 4v and 5 `two modified forms showing the same inventive idea have been disclosed illustrating clearly that the same inventive idea may be used readily with a large number of slightly different structural arrangements. In Figure4 there is provided a holding plate 3fand agard plate 8. A stud 4 is securedto the plate 3 by welding, riveting or any other desiredrmeans. `In this form of 'the invention the holding plate 3 is provided with depressions or recesses 14 and 15 while the guard platev8 is provided with offset portions 16 and 17 whereby sockets are presented for receiving the respective blades 18 and ,19.v Y These blades are very thin blades similar, to blade .7 but provided with only one cutting edge and made much narrower. The respective rivets 20 and 21 extend through the respective blades 18 and 19 and through the plates 3 and 8 whereby these plates are rigidly and permanently secured together and also the respective blades are rigidly and permanently mounted in position. j

The complete shaving head unit, as shown in Fig. 4, is designed to be applied to and be' removed from a' handle in a similar manner to handle 1, and when the edges of the bla'd'es 18' and 19v become dull the entire head is'thrown away.

ln' Figure 5 the blades 3 and 8 are combined in one plate namely, the supporting plate 22 which is bent back upon itselfv at points 23 and 24, and then bent again upon itself at points 25 and 26 for forming sockets for receivingtlie respective blades 18 and` 19. Rivets 20 and 21 extend through the various parts as shown in Figure 3 for rigidly clamping the respective blades to the supporting plate 22. The respective sections 27 and 28 merge into the guard `fingers of the type shown in Figures 2 and 3, orany other desired form of structure. In this form of the invention the-supporting plate 22 is provided with piessed-up beads 29 for reinforcing and sti'ening the plate. ln' Figure 1 the clamping plate 6 is provided with a number of pressed-up reinforcing and stiifening beads 30. These stiffening portions are not shown in Figure 4, but they can be used there, if` desired. Also, if desired, they c an be eliminated but where eliminatedthe clamping plate would usually be slightly thicker to secure the desired stiffness. It will therefore be noted that the guard is provided with ribs which project toward the blade engaging surface and terminates in the teeth or fingers of the guard. y l

fn Figure 7 a further form of the invention is shown which is similar to Figure (3` except that there is no central aperture inthe blade 7, and in reference to the guard plate 8 lit, will be seen that the same is-provided with a pressed out tubular member 31 which isthreaded.internally,.although it could be threaded externally. This arrangement permitsa handle'having a threaded extension to be used, but if a handle similar to handle 1 in Fig. 1, is used the threads c'ould be arranged externally. I

In Figure 8 a further modified form is shown wherein an interiorly threadedeyelet 32 is provided instead of the stem 4. This is adapted to receive a handle haying a threaded end which may be screwed directly into the eyelet or screwed into the integral veX- tension 31 ofthe structure shown in Figure 7. ln this form of Vtheinvention asv well as in the form shown in Figure 1 the blade isprotected at all times whereby danger of accidental cutting diiring the handling of the blade is practically eliminated, so that the blade may be easily applied or discarded safely. The blade and the respective plates coacting therewith are very thin and consequently rivets have been used to rigidly clamp the parts permanently together. By reason of the thinness of the respective parts, threads could not be provided in either of the plates and consequently a. clamping screw could not be used nor would it be feasible to use bolts as the same presents objectionable projections. It is, therefore, to be understood that rivets, welding or other means might be used which do not present projections and which would cooperate with thin plates.

`What I claim isl. In a shaving head unit a pair of thin holding plates one of said plates having fingers acting as a guard, a threaded stud permanently connected with and extending from one of said plates functioningto receive a handle when the unit is in use, a cutting blade positioned between said plates provided with cutting edges on the opposite sides, and rivets for rigidly and permanently non-removably securing said blade to said plates.

2. In a shaving head unit a pair of thin arc-shaped holding plates, a threaded stud permanently secured to and extending' from one of said plates and permanently extending through the other plate, said stud being adapted to receive a. handle when the unit is in use, a cutting blade permanently arranged between said plates and provided with cutting edges on opposite sides, and rivets extending through said plates and blade for rigidly and permanently securing said blade to said plates.

3. In a shaving head unit a blade having a cutting edge, a supporting plate for said blade, said plate being comparatively thin and incapable of receiving threads, rivets for permanently and rigidly securing said blade to said plate, means mounted upon said head presenting a threaded stud adapted to receive a handle when the unit is in use said stud npstanding from a central position on said plate, and means extending from said plate presenting guards.

4:. In a shaving head unit, a blade having a pair of cutting edges, supporting plates for said blade, rivets for permanently and rigidly securing said blade to said plates, means mounted upon said unit presenting a threaded stud whereby the unit may be connected with a handle when in use, and means forming ribbed guards extending from each edge of one of said plates.

5. In a shaving head unit a substantially wafer plate formed with guard fingers, a wafer blade carried by said plate, rivets for connecting said blade permanently to said plate and a threaded stud extending from said plate through said blade and vpermanently and rigidly connected to said plate.

6. In a' shaving head unit a1 guard plate provided with normally flat' blade having cutting edges on opposite sides coacting with said lingers, said blade having a centrally positioned aperture, a holding plate formed with an aperture, and saidV holding plate,

a stud rigidly secured to saidstud extending through said aperture in said blade and in said guard plate and formed with threads for receiving a handle whereby the handle may be removably connected with the unit, and

rivets vfor rigidly and pernianently securing said guard plate and holdextending from the respective edges inwardly, a pair of flat blades having cutting edges, one blade being fitted into each of said offset portions so that the cutting edges thereof will project beyond the offset, and rivets for cach blade extending through the respective plates and also through the respective blades for permanently and rigidly securing the blades'and plates together.

8. In a shaving head unit a plate provided with a threaded handle receiving stud positioned centrally of and extending normally to the surface of said plate; said plate being at each edge portion bent back on itself to present sockets, a portion of each edge having guard lingers, a blade fitted into each socket, and rivets foreach blade for permanently and rigidly securing the blades in position. j

9. In a shaving head unit a double edged blade, a guard plate fitting against said blade formed with guard fingers `extending beyond the edges of the blademeans for rigidly and permanently securing the guard plate and blade together, said plate at the center being formed with an integral pressed out hollow boss internally threaded for receiving a handle. l

10. In a shaving head unit a double edged blade, said edges being parallel, a guard plate fitting against said blade,.said guard plate having guard fingers extending beyond the edges of said blade,-means for permanently and rigidly securing said blade and plate together, said blade and plate having centrally positioned apertures, and an internally threaded eyelet firmly tted in said aperture, said eyelet being adapted to receive Vthe threaded end of a handle when the unit is in use.

13. In a safety razor, a removable handle and a shaving head. unit, said shaving head l unit comprising a pair of holding plates, a blade arranged therebetween, one of said plates being of substantially less Width than said bla-de and the other of said plates being of greater Width than said blade and formed With guarding fingers adjacent the edges of said blade, rivets for permanently and rigidly securing said plates and blade together, said rivets extending through said plates and blade and an upstanding threaded stud carried by one of said plates substantially centrally thereof, said stud being adapted to receive said removable handle.
