Description

C. H. HINDS.
ELECTRIC GAS LIGHTING ATTACHMENT. No.186,343. Patented Jan.16,1877.
NJETERS. PHOTQ-UTHUGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES Patient FFICE.
CHARLES H. HINDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRIC GAS-LIGHTING ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,343., dated January 16,1877; application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. limbs, of New York city, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lighting Gas by Electricity; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure represents a pers1)ective vie\v of the invention as attached to an ordinary gas-burner.
This invention relates to a device for lighting gas by electricity, where the electric current is made and broken at the orifice of the gas-burner, and the spark thereby serves to ignite the gas, and is constructed and arranged so that the circuit for producing the electric spark is closed by a simple touch upon one part of the device, and immediately and automatically opened as the object of igniting the flame is accomplished.
The object of this invention is to provide an electric lighter that is more simple, and quite as reliable as those now in use, which, not forming part of the burner, can readily be attached to any burner by any person, easily adjustable, operated independently, and comparatively inexpensive.
To accomplish this I construct a holder for electrodes in the form of a yoke, A, which slips over the burner B, and is held in the desired position by a set-screw. To one arm of the yoke is affixed an insulated electrode,
vO, made adjustable by set-nuts b b b. On the other arm of the yoke is attached a movable electrode, D, secured in such a manner, made in such a form, and so balanced, that by its own weight, without the aid of springs or other appliance, it remains away from the orifice of the burner, and free from contact with the insulated electrode.
For use, the yoke is slipped over the burner, secured by the set-screw. The point of the insulated electrode 0 is adjusted to meet the orifice for the flame, and one pole of the battery being connected with the insulated electrode between the two lower set-nuts b b, and the other pole of the battery being connected with the gas-pipe, the lighter is always ready.
To light the gas when turned on, a simple upward touch 011 the lower balanced portion of the movable electrode D throws the point forward to meet the point of the insulated electrode 0, the spark is produced, the gas is lighted, and the movable electrode immediately returns to its open position by its weighted lower portion.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in an electrical gaslighting attachment, of a carrying-yoke, a fixed adjustable electrode, and a pivoted electrode, normally falling away from the fixed electrode by gravity, and adapted to be swung into contact therewith by the hand, to produce the spark or sparks for lighting the gas, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in an electric gas'lighting apparatus, of a yoke, a movable balanced electrode, and a verticallyadjustable insulated electrode, substantially as described.
3. In an electric gas-lighting apparatus, an electrode soattached to the burner as to be made vertically adjustable to the flame of the gas, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28d day of March, 1876.
CHAS. H. HINDS.
