The hinged cover of the case is open. The assembled cigarette package is inserted in the case and the cover is closed. The three cutting blades will be withdrawn before the cover is closed and when the cover is closed will be forced inwardly cutting orsevering the side of the package immediately beneath the closed end on three sides. This serves to hold the severed end of the package in place on the cover. Then sincethe cover is pivoted slightly below the end of the case and below the end of the package when the cover is opened, this will tend to tear back the unsevered side of the p'ackagefor a short distance exposingthe sides of the cigarettes along the unsevered side of the package for a short distance downwardly from their ends and providing a convenient place where the cigarettes may be seized for withdrawal from the case. The severed partially torn off end of the package will be retained in the case during'use thus serving to perinanently posit-ion the wrapper or package in the case and permitting continued use of the end as a packing or closure for the package so as to cushion'the cigarettes and tend to maintain them in the same condition that they were when the package was open. This packing or cushioning efiect also prevents leakage of tobacco fragments, dust and the like from the case into the pocket of the user.

Whilethis invention is primarily intended for use in connection with cigarette packages, it is obvious that the device may be applied and used with any type of paper or fabric package which canbe fitted into a case, the end of which can be severed so that the end in the pivoted cover may be used as a closure to retain material while being used, dispensed or stored. The invention might be applicable to breakfast foods, salt packages, packages containing loose tobacco, sugar, chemicals and the like.

I claim: A Y Y 1. A receptacle adapted to contain a closed severable package, a pivoted latched cover for one end thereof, means mounted in the cover for severing the end of the package on three sides thereof and for gripping the severed end in the cover, the cover being hinged at a point below the end of the receptacle whereby when the cover is opened after severing the end of the package, the side of the package adjacent t e unsevered portion will be torn back a short distance.

In combination, a receptacle adapted to receive a severable package, a pivoted closure for the open end of the receptacle, slides mounted for reciprocation in the closure and held within limits of reciprocation, knives mounted on the slides adapted when the slides are in their outermost position to clear the package and adapted when the slides are in their innermost position to penetrate the package and grip the end thereof between their upper surfaces and the underside of the cover. A receptacle adapted to contain a closed severable package, a pivoted latched cover for one end thereof, means mounted in the cover for severing the end of the package, and for gripping the severed end in the cover, including a knife slidable in the cover at a level below the top of the package, said knife being adapted to confine the top of the package between itself and the cover, after the severing of the top. 1 7

A receptacle adapted to contain a closed severable package, a pivoted latched cover for one end thereof, means mounted in the cover for severing the end of the package, and for gripping the severed end in the cover, including a knife slidable in the cover at a level below the top of the package, said knife being adapted to confine the top of the package between itself and the cover, after the severing of the top, the cover being hinged at a point below the end of the receptacle, whereby when the cover is opened after severing the end of the package, the side of the package adjacent the unsevered portion will be drawn back a short distance.

6. The structure of claim 4 characterized by the employment of means for holding the cover normally in closed position.

A receptacle adapted to contain a closed package of cigarettes having a severable wrapper, said receptacle having an openable cover for one end thereof, meansassociated with the cover for partially severing the wrapper in a plane transverse to the long axes of the cigarettes and adjacent'theends of the cigarettes and for gripping and holding the partially severed end of the wrapper in the cover, whereby the said ends of the cigarettes will be exposed for convenient access and axial removal when the cover is'open.

9. A receptacle adapted to contain a closed package of cigarettes having a severable wrapper, said receptacle having an openable cover for one end thereof, means for partially severing the wrapper in a. plane transverse to his the long axes of the cigarettes and adjacent the ends of the cigarettes and for gripping and holding the partially severed end of the wrapper in the cover, whereby the said ends of the cigarettes will be exposed for convenient access and axial removal when the cover is open.

10. A receptacle adapted to receive a closed package of cigarettes having a severable wrapper, a cover for one end of said receptacle, and means associated with the cover for partially severing the wrapper in a. transverse plane between the ends of the cigarettes adjacent the cover and that portion of the wrapper which normally overlies said ends of the cigarettes, and for gripping and holding the partially severed end of the wrapper in the cover, whereby the said ends of the cigarettes are uncovered and exposed for convenient access and removal when the cover is open.

A receptacle adapted to receive a closed package of cigarettes having a severable wrapper, a cover for one end of said receptacle, and means associated with the cover for partially severing the wrapper in a transverse plane between the ends of the cigarettes adjacent the cover and that portion of the wrapper which normally overlies said ends of the cigarettes, and for gripping and holding the partially severed end of the Wrapper in the cover, whereby the said ends of the cigarettes are uncovered and exposed for convenient access and removal when the cover is open, said cover being pivoted along an axis transverse to the axes of the cigarettes along a plane below the end of the package opposed to the cover, whereby when the cover is opened after severing the end of the package, the upper edge of the side of the package adjacent an unsevered portion will be torn downwardly a short distance.
