Description
June 14, 1932. 1.. N. DAVIS ADJUSTABLE BED LAMP SHADE Filed Oct. 1, 1930 I N VEN TOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STTES LEWIS N. DAVIS, OF SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA ADJUSTABLE BED LAMP SHADE Application filed October 1, 1930. Serial No. 485,601.
My invention relates more particularly to a lamp and shade adapted to be hung or hooked over the head of a bed, with a shade portion adapted to be adjusted so as to direct the light to different positions and at the same time shade the eyes from any glare, and which can be quickly and easily dropped to a down or out-of-the-way position. This is particularly adapted for those who like to read in bed, and it can be moved to different positions along the head of the bed without any fastening or other means to be manipulated or adjusted, and the shade can be raised to different positions and quickly dropped again when the light is no more wanted.
In order to fully explain my invention, I have illustrated the same on the accompanying sheet of drawing, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an adj ustable bed lamp shade involving my invention and shown in its closed down position;
Figure 2 is a similar View showing the shade raised to an up position, and
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device applied to a bed.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 3 designates a supporting member having a hook 3 for quickly and easily hooking the device over the head-board of a bed, and a spacing portion 3 for holding the lower end of the support spaced so as to allow for clearance. Said support also has a cross bar or member 3, to which is pivotally connected two arms 4 and 5, attached to which is a shade body and lamp holder, said shade body being designated as awhole 6, and a lamp socket being designated 7, and lamp 8 therein. This shade body can be of any desired shape or size and is covered with any suitable covering, as may be desired to provide shade and ornamentation.
Pivotally connected to the lower and rear portion of the shade body 6, is a brace structure 9, having its free end slidably connected with the sides 3, 3, of said support, which are clear from the drawing. The ends of the 9 brace structure are slightly bent, as at 9, so that said shade body will drop down close to said support, and at their lower or pivoted ends, the sides of said brace structure has two projecting lingers to center or guide said 55 shade body to its proper down position, as shown in Fig. 1. Said centering fingers are designated 10, 10, and said covering is designated C.
When it is desired to use the lamp and shade it is only necessary to raise said shade body to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the brace structure 9 will slide clownwardly on the members 3, 3, as shown, and when it is desired to close down said shade body, it is only necessary to place the finger under said brace structure and raise it up, and the shade swings to its down position.
Thus I have provided a very simple, practical and portable combination lamp shade and lamp, pivotally supported and adjustable to differentpositions, with a supporting member which can be readily hooked over the head of a bed or other place where it is desire d to have such a lamp and eye shade, and while I have shown the device formed of wire, it will be understood that I do not limit the invention to the details of construction and arrangement used for illustrative purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
I claim:
A portable and adjustable lamp and shade consisting of a box-like shade body open at its bottom, means for holding an electric lamp therein, a supporting member adapted to be hooked over a bed head, said shade body being pivotally connected at its upper, rearward side to said supporting member, whereby said shade body can be swung outwardly away from said supporting member, and a pivoted brace member pivotally connected at one end to the lower rear side of said shade body and at its other end slidably connected to said supporting member to slide up and down on said supporting member, whereby as said shade body is swung outwardly said brace member will automatlcally slide down on said supporting member to hold said shade body in its out position, and when said brace member is pushed upwardly on said supporting member, said shade body will move inwardly against said supporting member.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, this 26th day of September, 1930.
LEWIS N. DAVIS.
